30 minutes of E3 1996

- Camcorder footage a 19 year old me filmed at E3 1996. Apologies for the lower right being partially obscured for most of the video. I honestly don't remember if that was a funky lens cap or what since the triangle size obstruction seems to vary in size. It was a Sony Hi-8 camcorder that I borrowed from "The Good Guys!" where I worked at the time. I've also edited out as much shaky footage as possible.
Notes from this show:
This was one year after Sega had surprise launched the Saturn during E3 1995 with a price tag of $399. By E3 1996, PS1 had already dropped to $199 which Sega was forced to match. This is probably the fastest, steepest price cut (1 year, 50%/$200) in console history. Despite this, Sega was still dedicated to the platform as they were showing Netlink for the Saturn. Unfortunately, it seems they were trying to make that lost Saturn revenue back because they were charging $200 for it.
Virtua Fighter 3 was not a great game but it still looks awesome to this day.
Nintendo bringing the laser light show to their booth. For some reason all I can think of is Poison videos from the 1980's when I see that stuff. Virtual Boy got a new MSRP of $100 but they weren't fooling anybody. Their sizzle reel showcased Goldeneye, Blast Corps! and WaveRace 64 among others but the only thing people were there for was Super Mario 64. Most of the demo stations were running it and they were packed.
Other than that the show was actually kind of dull as it was mostly sequels from every publisher. The next E3 I would attend would be E3 1999 where we saw John Romero in person talking to someone about Daikatana and our initial reaction was "Dude, he crimps his hair?!". Sadly, I have no footage of that.

I read about this show jealously when Game Fan reported it back...I devoured that issue! This really was the Golden Age. Sega, Nintendo, Sony...everyone was at the top of their game!

I first experience playstation back around 95-96 when my cousins were playing Street Fighter Alpha and Xtreme Games. I was so blown away because 3D graphics were new at that time and the thought of playing on a CD was also a new concept. So I went back at home and thought maybe I can play my mom's Madonna CD's as a game, lol.

Sega Saturn, sony playstation and N64 has debuted, great 90's of these games.
I can’t believe this made it onto the internet. I remember hearing about E3 back in the 90s and it felt like some made up, fantasy thing where all the magic of video games gathered once a year. But nope, it was real. Here’s the proof. I know people kind of turned on E3 as the years went on but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss it. What we have in its place just doesn’t feel the same. Long live E3. You were special.

I weren't there, i was busy being a 7 year old kid, but my dad brought home a PS1, and a heap of pictures, videos. Such great times, dude.
I especially remember the jumping flash and the namco tekken panels. He brought me Tekken, and i couldn't wait for Tekken 2. So many great games followed...

Virtua Fighter 3 was known later as Virtua Fighter 3tb and came out 3 years later for Sega Dreamcast.

That's Jumping Flash...one of my favorites from the early days of the PS1.
Aside from the actual story of Sonic Xtreme, i think if i was Sega at this E3 seeing Mario 64 and looking at even the video for Sonic Xtreme, vs an actual playable game of Mario 64, i would just throw Sonic Xtreme in the bin and start again. It is amazing to look at this E3 though, as a consumer looking around you wouldn't have guessed Playstation would be the absolute standout winner of this war. All 3 look pretty evenly matched.

That is my favorite part. Since the Windows -based Nintendo 64 SDK was launched in 1996 before the launch of the games (developed by using the Windows Based N64 SDK) for Nintendo 64 starting in 1998 such as Banjo-Kazooie.

Ah, what ancient footage indeed. As a longtime Kirby fan though, what really interests me here is the footage of Kirby's Air Ride 64 that was recently brought to the attention of Kirby Informer. Who knew that this version of the game directly reused music from Kirby Super Star?

Nice catch. A lot of wrestling theme songs were originally stock music used elsewhere. Harlem Heat, Hardcore Holly, Hardy Boyz all come to mind....Steve Blackman's first theme for sure.....

The Kirby game shown is actually Kirby Air Ride before they finally released it on Gamecube,yup at the very beginning of the N64 unveiling back in 1996 the game was in production altough it was only a beta.I wonder how the game would had looked if they finished it in time and released it on N64 ?

The N64 was the shit back in the day, even though I never had a PS1 while I was growing up, I always had an N64 until we got the Gamecube in 2005.
