What really happened is the Jacobite army took the British completely by surprise by doing the Highland charge, the soldiers in the British army had only recently been recruited so instead of holding their ground they began running away from the Highlanders, it lasted just 20 minutes and the British didn't even get the chance to get into line.
The British army was fully formed in line to receive the Highland charge, having rapidly redeployed on first detecting the new Jacobite position. The early flight of the dragoons left each flank of the infantry exposed, and after giving what the Jacobites themselves called a "hot" fire, the infantry also routed. For a recent published analysis of the Prestonpans campaign, we recommend "On Gladsmuir Shall the Battle Be" by Arran Johnston.
Not a very realistic enactment as shown by the Scottish Battlefields Trust. Would the real warriors, preparing for battle & possible death, have a music soundtrack imposed on them, pounding away in the background, as they went about their business in 1745 ? Perhaps that's where things went wrong at the Somme, Passchendaele, Ypres etc. The soldiers there never had an orchestra playing as they went into battle - but there again, maybe the generals thought that adding music for dramatic effect wasn't required ?
I think the British army in this video were more effective than in the actual battle ;)
Awesome re-enactment, enjoyed the battle, Simon R-Hunter 😊
Very authentic with a transit van & council housing in the background as well as modern metal fence
Really enjoyed this video. Is the re-enactment happening this year? If so, I'd love to come along, maybe even see about taking part.
Next one is in September 2024, so a year for you to prepare! Get in touch with us if you're interested
@@Prestonpans1745 I am definitely interested.
Excellent event
I loved the charge.
Do the different colours of the leggings or puttees mean anything? Just some are white, some black and some seems to be brown.
White was the official parade dress, but brown and black gaiters were often used in the field as being more suitable for campaigning.
@@APJHeritage Cheers lad, thanks for the reply.

Obviously the music is only on the video playback, not actually during the displays...
