A 6,000 ton patrol ship? Goes nicely with the 10,000 ton "frigate" Germany is building! More seriously, these are very capable ships and Italy is smart to have them. You should have shown the bridge, which features aircraft-like cockpits for ship handling.
What really costs in warships is not size, but equipment, both for acquiring and mantaining it. So, to reduce costs, to not use very expensive weapon and sensor loaded ships for tasks that don't require them, it's better to have more common hulls, to achieve scale economy, and reduce the equipment installed in some of them, keeping the possibility to upgrade them later.
They are patrol ship just in name. They are de facto frigates ,and pretty capable too. But for political reasons they called patrol ships. Like the Orizzonet are called frigates but are de facto destroyers.
Actually Italy is also building 4 2300t patrol vessels (PPX) which are the " little sisters" of PPA 😂. Many of the design features of PPA were used on PPX to save costs and production times

So, to reduce costs, to not use very expensive weapon and sensor loaded ships for tasks that don't require them, it's better to have more common hulls, to achieve scale economy, and reduce the equipment installed in some of them, keeping the possibility to upgrade them later.
Yeah. As an Italian I'm proud that Italian ship builders were able to make such a ship design. Also the design PPA was the base for the smaller PPX (a 2300t class patrol vessels, Which are under construction) . Saving money and production times for creating also another ship class
You are so right. The LCS is a total waste of money that was designed to do many things and can do none of them well as the saying goes. As Lily Munster would say, "Well Herman, you've goofed it again."
Great ship. The newest version, the PPA Evo, will have 64 vls, two 30 mm rws ,2 76 mm cannons with dart/ vulcano guided munitions, capable to track missiles and drones, 2 triple torpedos launchers and a laser. They will replace the two ships sold to Indonesia.
These are serious warships. At 6000 tonnes, 32 knots for 5000 miles range, that's some serious engine power. They have extensive weapons but I note the absence of a Close In Weapons System. These are needed for a fast battle ship of these size. Italy should build at least one a year for the next decade, to give it the respect it deserves on the high seas.
High speed is required to reach patrol areas quicky if needed. The ship was found "overdone," and the original ship number reduced. A slightly smaller ship for patrol duty is being commissioned to take the role in large numbers all across EU. All the remaning "Light" PPA ships will be upgraded to full Equipment adding the X band radar and Missiles. At close range, engagements are covered by the 76/62 on top of the hangar and a couple of 25mm remote guns. On the EVO+, the 25mm will be switched for more powerful 30mm. Italy does not employ RIM system on any on its ships, preferring radar guided fast firing guns.
Both the 127/64 and 76/62 acts as CIWS, the high precision, rate of fire and the use of guided munitions makes it perfect to engage any type of target (drones, missiles, aircrafts and boats) from up to 20-30km They are extensively used in the Italian Navy on basically any combat ship.
There is no lack of CIWS, italian navy don't use small calibers like the phalanx in that role. The 76 and potentially the 127 is meant to be used as ciws, a risky trade of volume and rate of fire for longer range and warhead size.
the only lack of ppa is the sonar not present in keel nose, but the full configuration use towed sonar like captas i suppose or the ones prese on helicopters
@@karlvongazenberg8398funny, no really funny...now let me get your frigate and sub order on the go, would you like it diesel with maybe a side order of F35 ?
have an operational range of approximately 5,000 nautical miles (9,260 km) at a cruising speed of 15 knots. The endurance of the Italian Pattugliatori Polivalenti d'Altura (PPA) is approximately 45 days, depending on operational conditions and mission requirements.

Yes and no: it is more flexible then a standatd frigate and can be set for a wider range of uses. The mid ship void area is made for storing large containers which could contain a lot of special equipments depending jn the mission. It can also generate drining water and electricity in case of disaster relief interventions. High speed (a typical frigate is about 5Kn slower) is also a choice to bring the patrol ship as quickly ad possible un the area where a presence is needed. Unfortunately the ship is too expensive in terms of crew and system mantainance to operate purely as an ofshore patrol boat, so the original ship procurement has been cut down. All the Light version (the first 2) will be updated to Light plus or probably full, adding the X band AESA radar and a Sliver missile launcher and effectively become a fully fledged frigate. The EVO plus will be effectively a powerful frigate with 2x16 Aster Sliver modules. A smaller Patrol boat is now veing coodeveloped for many EU nations and will take the role originally devised for this PPA
