    Perhaps you could do a video on sharpening those blades sir. I bought an FS 91 and that style blade came with it. I went to a three point brush knife and found it to be better for the small tree undergrowth, tall grass, and raspberry canes. That might be another good video, sharpening the brush knife blades.
    Thanks for showing the fundamental jobs for us as well as the more advanced with clear instructions.
    Cheers from NB

      You really shouldn't need a video for that. Pick which method you want to use, a file, a grinder, or a diamond block (stone is too slow unless you make it into a hobby, lol), and sharpen like you would any other blade, but when you are done, check the balance by putting it on a horizontal bolt and seeing if it has any tendency to settle in one position which would indicate it is heavier on that side and needs more material taken off the blade(s) on that side to balance. If you use a grinder, don't hold it too long in one spot so you don't soften the metal.

    I like the video. You mentioned the most important part. Similar to a chainsaw. The blade must be put on correctly to cut well. Its stamped on the blade but a lot of people still put it on wrong.

    Great video Don! Those blades can be sharpened using a chainsaw file. I use my file for my .325 chain. It takes a while to do but they can be sharpened a few times before needing replacement.

    The three pronged brush cut blade is the best one to get. I’d only ever run that one. These type of blades are best for cutting tree saplings or other tough trunks. I always use the three pronged one even for hacking black berry bushes and bracken.

    • @Syncop8rNZ
      @Syncop8rNZ 5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah I was using the circular blade at work today, it's good at cutting big stuff but pretty useless otherwise. The tri-blade is much better for cutting and clearing away everything else.

    I bought my FS76 brush cutter just shy of 30 years ago, and although I have a couple tubes of that grease I haven’t greased the thing for at least 20 years. And this despite the fact that I have racked up 1,500 hours at least maintaining more a mile of trails, hillsides and driveway edges spread over 30 acres. While the steel blade has its uses - and I sure wouldn’t want to use one without the control of the handlebar-style cutter - I have found the three-knife nylon blade cutter head to be the best compromise of efficiency, durability and range of materials cut. Might try greasing the thing. Or not. I have a feeling it will outlast me.

    I would spin the blade by hand while squeezing in the grease , for better distribution.

    • @stinkycheese804

      There's not a lot of room in there to go wrong, as long as it gets on the gear at all, since it is not a 1:1 ratio, different teeth touching with each rotation, it will spread out enough when you run it, and any more than that which you got on by spinning it while squeezing, will just be flung off anyway.

  • @WJCTechyman
    @WJCTechyman 5 місяців тому

    Regarding the grease port on the gearbox, Chickanic mentioned this in one of her videos as well. I guess most people don't care to have it but I certainly do. All of Echo's stuff is like this now as well. I guess if you really wanted to grease it you could take the gearbox apart, wash it thoroughly with brake cleaner (minding rubber O-rings, some metals and bearing seals, of course) and re-lubericate it. Although, it seems like too much effort.

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 5 місяців тому

      Why would you think that most people don't care to have it? Not once ever did I see, hear, read about, or even roll the bones and get a ghost spirit owl-man telling me that anyone doesn't care to have it. There would be no reason for that false belief, assuming someone thought that one that can't be greased, wouldn't also benefit.

    So if you can't grease it from the side of the head, can you take the bearing out of the bottom non-destructively to add grease, or should you plan on buying a new bearing? Meh, by the time I got to that point, I'd be tapping the side and putting a jerk on like it should have had in the first place instead of the bolt.
