If I’ve learned one thing owning a tree company it is to not get mad or frustrated when something like the pull cord breaking while at the top of the tree, you handled that very well man. Everything happens for a reason!
You said it buddy ... there is no sense in fighting against the flow when equipment fails. In this case it was a reminder to check and replace those cords :) be well out there

I just realized your 50 plus…bravo. I started climbing 2 years ago at 55 after retiring from commercial diving.
Commercial diving sounds pretty interesting! I recently read "Into the Planet" a book about cave diving -- it had me freaked out! Lets hear it for us guys in our 50s :)

yeah first climb in a while wearing a hoodie! getting chilly ... but the thing is that up here tree work pretty much stops in the winter. not like Florida! :)

I don't know why but I get freaked out when YOU are up there. I don't see myself following in your footsteps any time soon 😐 No issues as a kid with no gear but struggle in my "old" age even kitted out 😞

Enjoyed the video. Crazy tree....but kinda fun. Thankfully you had a good drop zone. You must be getting tired of doing your own ground work by now. You need a good ground man to keep the flow going downstairs so job doesn't last so long and you physically survive.
Yeah that tree was one wild ride! I'm a bit unusual, I guess, in liking all parts of the job including the cleanup ... but I see your point: having a great co-worker would be ideal. Just haven't found the right person to hire lately

If pull cord broke while you were tied to the crispy section, may have been more galling, but you handled it like a Shaoiln Monk. If l may ask, How do you rate Notch Glide Lanyard, l have a big interest in one, keep up the superb work, greetings from Ireland !!!
Oh man, to have a saw croak out in that crispy section would be too much to handle! I'm getting used to the Notch Glide but it's a bit grabby and hard to slide in tough spots. Maybe it's just that I"m sooooo used to pulling back instead of pushing forward. But I'm gonna stick with it on a different stiffer rope and see how it goes.
And I should say: I haven't been to Ireland in too long! My family originated from there so I kinda see it as a home-away-from-home

Awesome vid…how you liking the notch grab? I use one on my wire core and love it. Takes a little to get used to it. Seemed to work best on wire core. I use an ART for my lanyard.
I love mine. I use it on my wire core and a rope one. Just need to adjust the friction for diff ones
yeah it's taken me some time getting used to it ... I think it might prefer a different rope
i hear ya…love mine on a ptzl micro wire lanyard and it works awesome. hated it on a rope lanyard and went to a art 2. @@ClimberinChrist

I keep wanting to like it but the dang thing is horrible with sap and slips on some ropes. So not my favorite but I still use it on spar anchors
I don't think pull ropes ever break at the right time...but that was definitely the wrong wrong time!
you said it man ... kinda like when windshield wipers fall apart in that big rain storm and the sole of my boot comes off and flaps the whole way home on a long walk :)
Early in the climb you cinched with a ring and biner. I was thinking of trying that. Later you used just the biner. Why the change?
As I recall I found the ring setup tedious but I’ll have to get back to it as it’s superior in some ways. Good eye!
You litterally had some ups and downs on that job. Better upgrade your saws to Dyneema pull cords!

Hey Spence how are you liking the Notch Glide, thinking whether to get that or the Zillon.
I have mixed feelings about it ... the dang thing never misses or slides when you don't want it to, but it's DANG hard to slacken in some situations. On a recent climb I found myself going full koala bear on the limb just to loosen my lanyard to then loosen/slack the glide. I'm thinking that may have to do with rope type ... but I'm still not sold on the dang thing 100%. If I think of it tomorrow I'll make a short about it so you can see what I mean
@@metaspencer Nice one dude much appreciated info. All the vids I've found just sing its praises but I've been stung before. I had been using a grigri (technically a grillon but I took the screw out so I could put my own rope in it) but it too can become so locked up you can't budge it. Had a go with my mates zillon and its smoothness is lovely just like my zigzag, but like my zigzag you bump the first link on even a twig and its releasing!

I am trying to learn a new way to climb. I am a Blakes hitch dude at the moment. What device is on your belt? What rope? I think I'll buy n try.
Using a Blake's hitch is an excellent way to go! It gives you a good feel for the ropes, knots, and overall movement in the tree. I use an array of ropes for different things ... and a few different devices to ascend and descend

@@purryegbert8609 Exciting! There are a lot of options out there. I always tell people to practice the climbing without a saw for a lonnnng time before cutting in the tree

What chain do you have on that?
I've got a bunch of saws with all kinds of different chains, but I'm pretty sure that bad boy has had a full-chisel Stihl chain (none of that anti-kickback stuff) on there. Hand sharpened with the rakers taken down a bit for the soft pine.
no wonder the ground crew is slacking off, you are too fast and burry them in 12 feet of brush, duh

Dude ur a working mother humper. get some forks an a grapple for ur machine. Forks work great for picking up wood
I've got a grapple on order ... forks would be nice tho! gettin' it done ya know :)
