I think it really depends on the school you choose. We chose Chester’s pre-school due to the fact we also loved the reception setting. We spoke in depth to the reception teacher and she spoke about how it it still 90% play, the do their Phonics and maths for an hour or two in the morning and then play all day. Even year 1 is mostly play and then as the year goes on they gradually transition them into a more traditional school setup ready for year 2. I loved that as I believe children need to play, they shouldn’t be forced to sit at a desk and learn. That is not the world we live in these days. I hope you find a school that you love and suits arlo 🩵 x

I’m a teacher and of course every school is different, but many schools will have a play based learning approach in reception and even year 1.
Each day there will probably be short focus times, perhaps followed up by an adult led activity, but the majority of the day will most likely be spent learning through play in different areas of ‘provision’ (areas set up to meet the different learning goals - this will include play dough, water/sand play, arts and crafts, construction and small world, as well as maths and mark making stations)
In terms of writing, first it’s important to gain those gross and fine motor skills. Activities like mark making in flour / sand are good ways of introducing letter formation, but you don’t / shouldn’t necessarily start with writing letters. Just google prewriting strokes 😊 hope that helps.

    Love your videos as always.
With my daughter she’s starting school in sept and they say it doesn’t matter if they don’t know their numbers etc because they will help them learn in class but it’s more down to learning while playing. Don’t put pressure on yourself he will get there honestly. Xxx

Love your videos! I am so pleased you are not feeling in survival mode. I’ve been there too, especially with my first, not so much with my second!
Regarding learning Pinterest is great for ideas to make it a bit more fun. Even writing the numbers/letters in the sand of your new sandpit? A tray full of rice or a chalk board from Poundland?
You can also do a tub full of rice and hide numbers/letters in it for him to find them write which ones he found? Draw big numbers on paper then get Arlo to line up his cars on them? I hope this helps xxx

Liv, I'm a primary teacher and I would recommend practising writing using sand, chalk, whiteboard and pen instead of the books first. You need to model (show him rather than tell him) what you'd like him to do and it's best to make it fun and like a game. Use different pens/pencils in different colours etc. The books would be better when he's more comfortable and you've modelled it for a while. Using the others things first mean it's not permanent and if he does go wrong he can just start again!
The first term (Sept to Dec) is mainly play in reception with the children getting used to routines ie. Taking coat off, hanging up with bag etc. and then sitting on the carpet for around 5 mins for register, talking about what day it is, what's the weather like. They will also have some guided teaching for phonics but most of it is called continuous provision which is guided play based on something the teacher wants them to learn that week. This is usually based on a book or object.
You could practise these things at home if you're worried so that they don't seem so abstract when he starts.
    Hope that helps :)

Hi Liv your son is a little hyperactive as mine, with kids like that you have to do everything as a play. If you want to teach him how to draw letters and numbers you have to make it fun. Try to buy a magnetic board or a writing tablet board, kids love that and then try with something simple like circles and lines and when he is up to the task start introducing to him some numbers and letters the easy ones remember your son is only 3 years old. In my opinion those books to draw letters and numbers are a little bit boring and unattractive for toddlers. My son was the same and as soon as a I started to use a writing tablet board and do everything as a game he started to learn in a fun way. Good luck. ❤
