Achilles, just slain in the Trojan War, arrives in the Underworld and is greeted by Sibyl of Cumae- a prophetess and also the realm’s local guide. Though it gets a bad rap, Sibyl is determined to prove to the newcomer that hell is actually a lovely place to live; bursting with historic charm and eccentric neighbors. Iseult Gillespie takes a tour of the Underworld and its most infamous inhabitants.
Lesson by Iseult Gillespie, directed by Arvind Singh Jeena, Nikhita Prabhudesai Jeena, Totem Creative.

the little expression on Achilles' face when she brought up Patroclus' name was precious
Bro's so sensitive about his 'best friend' apparently 😂
Ofc he did they were meant to be
Revisionism
@@frfras7 He was still sad and wrathful about it and him wanting to see Patroclus again isn't something this far off.
Basically, chill.
@@visionofsolace8961 chill bro? I just wrote a word 😭
Achilleus expressions throughout this video are great. He doesn't have to say a single word, but you always know how he feels.
Agreed! ^_^
Makes me think of mr bean
Achilles expressions are the most realistic expressions anyone would make when they just died and suddenly some lady started to give you a tour you didn't ask for.
And all you wanna do is see your “bEsT fRiEnD” (aka lover) again but she insists on showing you around eternal damnination lol
I like to think Patroclus and Achilles reunited in the underworld and lived happily ever after
🥹😭
For clarification, they are lovers.
They did!! In the game Hades, Our boii Zagreus's one of the side quests was reuniting them.
wasn't that a strong implication?
“Lived” is perhaps unoptimal phrasing
This felt like Persephone herself guided Achilles and all of us through the domains of Hades. Absolutely wonderful.
I can see it
oh yeahh...I feel like Persephone has a sort of nurturing nature whenever I hear stories about her
@@NOOBCRASTINATOR69 I feel that way too
Those teary eyes upon hearing the name Patroclus. You had no right to do that to my heart, Ted Ed.
I wonder how many will get the reference!
Madeline Miller had no right to do that either, but she did. THEY DESERVE TO BE HAPPY. THEY SWORE IT.
Odd that they didn't include the Titans during the tour of Tartarus. They are some of the most important figures in Greek mythology. When the Olympians won the war against the Titans, the latter were overthrown and banished to Hades. Since the Titans are primoridal forces of nature, they cannot be killed, so the Olympians had no choice but to imprison them in Tartarus, the darkest deepest depths of the Underworld. For all of eternity, the Olympians have to struggle to keep the Titans locked away, lest chaos be unleashed upon the world and disrupt the order of the Olympians. Since the Gods of Mount Olympus symbolize the faults and flaws of humanity, as well as what we strive to be, they also represent mankind's eternal struggle against chaos by upholding order through great effort and struggling. After all, it takes an individual of great strength, such as an Olympian, to overcome the Titanic forces of everyday existence.
Well said
they also never mention about the fields of asphodel
Kinda did when they mentioned the Mourning Fields but felt it would be better if it had Asphodel meadows instead, such an overlooked realm between Elysium and Tartarus.
I learned about Greek mythology from Hades the video game and I am certainly proud of it 😂
The information was actually great and interesting to find about!
You certainly shouldn't be! 😂
In the immortal words of Tisiphone: Mmmmurrr...derr...?
In game, it makes sense that Tartarus is the easiest region since it's the starting area. But it's funny how the worst zone is the easiest, while the best zone is Elysium, and that region has such annoying enemies.
All love to my fellow Hades gamers ❤
is it normal to imagine that one part of the underworld would look a bit like a reception in an airport or am i just insane in the head
In the Percy Jackson books, the gate of the underworld is quote, “…a cross between airport security and the New Jersey Turnpike.”
Asphodel Meadows: you're mind becomes numb and everyone just stands or sits there, dumbly.
You are not insane. That's just interesting - your imagination. If you believe such is absolutely true and real, now that is insanity. Because you've never been to the underworld so you don't know what it's like. (Aside from the fact that we don't even know underworld exists in the first place)
I was bummed when you guys were making less and less greek mythology videos, these videos are getting rarer by the day! I was glad to see you guys are making them again.
"the heel (heal) boy. Sorry, I know that's a sensitive spot" got me
I liked Albert Camus’ nihilistic interpretation of Sisyphus as not torture but always having a motivation, a goal to reach. Because no matter what happens, he never gives up. He still, day in and day out, tries to push the boulder up the hill. He could easily give up, yet he never does.
The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.
One must imagine sisyphus happy.
Nah when his boulder rolls down the hill the kinetic energy of his hard work rushes down like the ultimate hot wheel destroying all in its path
@@markydenit's almost impossible to imagine him happy isn't it? You certainly can get rid of negative thoughts
(Big Fan of Albert Camus btw, his take of society n governance is so deep and enriching)
But just what reasons he could have had to be happy
I mean.. He can't exactly give up as They'll just make him push it still
The narrator voice and tone is so inviting, you’d think that’s an Ad or a virtual tour for a college or a sorority 😂
But Nope , it’s the underworld
I love how Achilles and Patroclus reunited in the Underworld
And then there’s the realm of Asphodel, the “purgatory” of the underworld. Sadly goes overlooked a lot with its long list of listless inhabitants, but hey it beats Tartarus. (Except if you’ve played Hades; in which case it’s constantly on fire.)
When you're a skeleton, I doubt the sensation of burning remains. In the post game...

It's revealed the inhabitants of Asphodel are used to the lava. I like the cold, but if I were to spend the rest of my immortal soul in Asphodel, I'm pretty sure the form I would take would enjoy it.
Song of Achilles was one of my top favorite books. No further discussion
Same, i'm so glad they mentioned it ❤
whoever created this animation is a top tier proffesionals
give them a raise
Agreed
Teary-eyed upon hearing of Patroclus ❤❤❤❤❤ Heartwarming. Soon they will reunite...
I like how despite her cheerful demeanor. Nothing she says is dispelling Achilles" dread of being sent to the Underworld" 😂
Agreed
Edit: I meant agreed

Another mythological Greek figure known to have done a similar gruesome act was Lycaon - king of Arcadia - who was then punished by Zeus by being turned into a wolf.
Ands that’s where the word “lycanthrope” came from
"Thats it, youre becoming a furry"
"NNNOOOOOOOOOOOO"
They turned him into a furry lmao
What's that guy's name who Zeus had him bound to a mountain, every day a vulture swoops down to eat his liver while the guy is still alive.
Only for his body to fully heal by nightfall and repeat the painful cycle once again.
@@user-xs5bl9dy6d Prometheus, god of foresight, he was also saved by Heracles
It seems that the idea of the underworld isn’t about physical torture but more of a psychological one .
Hope is still there , but your efforts remain futile and despair is the everlasting feeling 😢
I love how they didn’t state the nature if the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus
True love doesn't need labels❤❤
@@spirit4607 exactly!

@@spirit4607, yes it needs. In order to order love from sin.
Kudos to animators and Ted Ed team. They are the Picassos of knowledge turning random dry topics into vibrant work of art that makes learning fun.🙏🙏❤❤
Very well done (and thought out) animation. Great attention to detail, not only regarding Achilles but also about the distinction between the various facets of the underworld. Good stuff. Thanks.
Omg ted ships Achilles and Patroclus 🥺🥺🥺🥺
I love this, how is references all of the different myths and stories relating to the Underworld in Greek mythology.
Definitely going to share this with people and save it for later.
The expressions of Achilles are nicely done and easy to understand without through words. He gives me a Courage the Cowardly Dog vibe which i really like
Achilles just needs a hug
I was rereading the song of Achilles yesterday and wow, Ted Ed has published a video about them now 😩❤️
I would seriously watch full seasons and full-length episodes of stuff like this it’s pure entertainment and educational quality
Finally a UA-cam guide for this, feels like iv been asking for a few thousand years.
We need more of these please 🙏🏻
Great job guys , superb animations
Best video of theirs I've seen in a good long while.
1:25 I love how that reflects the time he got his near complete indestructibility
Achilles is such a sad boy, and I am here for it.
this was the most hilarious picture of Greek underworld 😁 and the way of narration added so much flavour.
One of the most entertaining videos from TED ED. I read Miller's book and it is the best fiction book I've ever read. Took me WEEKS to move on from it. I just hope that the last part of the video showed the two lovers meeting again :)
Fun lesson, packed with information and humor
The narration was amazing!
Love her voice, its like that of a hostess of a luxury airline or a travel agent.
This is so fun! I love the voice acting.
Thank you Ted ed for this video! I just finished reading the book and this video just made my dayyyy.. Please continue posting mythology related stuff...Huge fan! 💗💫
Ahhh I always wait for iseult's videos.
Water from the river of Lethe was used as a plot point in the So weird series finale when the Philips family and Clue broke an amphora meant for Annie from a enemy that wanted revenge. Mind you that she was there for just the one season after Fiona left.
When I hear Persephone mention Patroclus and Achilles suddenly tearing up, the first thought I had was the Song of Achilles and it actually popped up at the end! I love that book so much
Put my hand to my heart when Patroclus was mentioned. I was sobbing at the end of the book
Need a series now 🤌🏾🤌🏾
2:17 that chibi Achilles 🤪😇
yet another beautiful animation!
The game Hades is wonderful if you want a deep dive in the underworld. (Also get to interact and even reunite Achilles and Patroclus.
I love the animation and I want to see more of the story.
Thank you for your stimulus video. I am an intermediate English learner, 3:31; the idiom " have one's way with" have exceptionally educational meaning which I referred to our indigenous dictionary, I found there somewhat proceeding/innovative/old-fashioned meaning.
She’s selling it. Love it!!!
This was great! I just finished the audiobooks of Mythos and Heroes by Stephen Fry - so awesome and so many stories!
Well done, VERY accurate!
Any videos added to the Greek myth section by Ted-Ed is a win for me, who else loves Greek myth??
“I brought foes to their knees in Phonesia, breezed through Gaza to Giza. Had the Balkans, Persia, Syria, Iraq and Pakistan in my expansion pack!” Alexander the Great
Edit: Kudos! Greek for the glory I brought, from winning every single war that I fought!
Cringe

ENOUGH ! I don't stand chance against your skill. Da slovia ! A drink for your victory.
Epic Rap Battles of History is just awesome!
I need more of these
I love these videos about mythology
I learned about a ton of Greek lore thanks to video games like Hades and God of War.
I love song of Achilles, it’s my favorite book ever
Nice Wilhelm screams around 2:45! "The Greatest Sinners of all time"
How Achellies tries to get out of the boat is so funny😂
Such an adorable animation!
I really need to read Song of Achilles. Also man this channel is the best
I'm here to warn you: no, don't. Your heart will break and you will not stop thinking about them. You will become obsessed with playing Hades and writing/reading fanfiction in half-successful attempts to make your soul whole again.
@@Harambae613I can confirm
this is amazing
Thank you!
I simply love the tone of the narrator’s voice, its like a 1950’s commercial with a touch os humor
Jeez, what a nice way to explore the Greek afterlife (all that was missing were the titans in their eternal prison). after the Ani papyrus is an excellent way to find out what the ancients believed about the afterlife. (those from Extra History= Extra Credits: they had already done their own tour of the ancient Greek Underworld entitled "A Tour of Hades - The Ancient Greek Underworld - Extra Mythology", only they went out on it)
A Tour of Hades: ua-cam.com/video/Zu7c3Uv366M/v-deo.html
Believe it or not, the Titans were actually later freed from Tartarus and Kronos was given joint rulership of Elysium with Persephone
I know this, unfortunately very few people talk about it and no one has made a worthy video.
What about Asphodel? The place were people who were not heroes nor criminals just vibe and chill forever.
Beautiful animation!! I enjoyed this tour in the underworld 😂.
3:55 Ooh, I’ve never heard this version of the story before!
Hades 2 is coming out and this vid just got me excited!
I loooove this animation
I love how in the beginning he still had the arrow in his ankle
Tantalus is where we get the world “tantalizing” from
lovely storytelling
Heel boy!!😂😂😂
It was all Cumulous from there, nothing nimbus about this awesome trip to the underworld.
Hope to visit someday!
brilliant animation. just, brilliant.
How many children do you think Zeus has? You can come to the channel and take part in the survey.
I read percy jakson and seening this is amazing.
One must imagine Sisyphus happy...
4:47 one must imagine him happy
Not included are The Fields of Punishment (the punishment for sinners not bad enough for Tartarus) and Asphodel Fields (the catch-all for everyone else)
No mention of asphodel is maddening
The only thing better than the animation of Achilles is the voice of the narrator; I love her hushed gossipy tone when she talks about the king flirting with Hera 😂😂
The VA for the prophetess is really enjoying herself.
The narrator's voice is so soothing 😌
great!
Anyone remember the episode of "Dinosaurs" where the grandma kept dying and reporting back about the afterlife so she wound up on TV selling condos in the afterlife? This reminds me of that episode. Good fun.
The song of Achilles ❤️❤️❤️
The Percy Jackson Series really did a lot to kindle my interest in Greek mythology ❤
nice creative story.
finally ted ed mentioned france!
That was fun 😊
Amazing
She didn't seem to mention Hades and Persephone's palace with their vast riches of gold and diamonds on their thrones who he is supposed to meet when he gets there.
Maybe they're busy
Omg the lil achilles is weirdly cute considering he's a literal invincible warrior (if you don't count his foot)
I wonder if Ted ed will do more underworld tours in the future.
really nice
