- Follow the chilling Japanese tale of Oiwa, a ghost seeking revenge after her husband poisoned her and killed her father.
--
Oiwa’s only hope for ending her marriage to the cruel and dishonorable samurai, Iemon, was her father. But after he tried to end the union, Iemon murdered him in cold blood. With plans to marry another, Iemon conspired to poison his wife and left her for dead. But unfortunately for Iemon, it wouldn’t be the last of Oiwa. Kit Brooks shares the chilling tale of Oiwa’s ghostly revenge.

This story could have been solved with the husband simply agreeing to leave his first wife 😂
But the man was prideful, he didn't want to be known as someone horrible enough his wife left him (at the time divorce was a stigma and only someone desperate enough would rather be a pariah to endure constant abuse). But yeah, they both hated each other.
Lúc đó Oiwa vừa sinh con, Iemon đã chán ghét cô và mê mẩn người vợ mới Oume cùng gia sản của gia đình cô ta. Hắn là kẻ hèn hạ
@ximec.r.2643 still a good concept for a story though :)
@@Hatsumono i feel like thats unrelated to op
Many cultures do not allow that.
I mean even in abrahamic religions divorcing was very very frowned upon
Japanese really got the most scariest ghosts and unnerving stories
Oh yeah definitely
Ditto
True ❤❤
fr why did I watch this at 11
bc of this I raised my feet thinking she's under and gonna grab my feet 😢😅
So one thing not mentioned here is that some versions of the play depicted a small and tragic romance between Oiwa and Kohei (the servant) In these versions, Kohei was always trying to help Oiwa as much as possible, but as a servant, he had no power to go against Iemon. The only thing he could do was stay with Oiwa and try to comfort her. He was always by her side even when the poison disfigured her and he never flinched at her gruesome appearance. When she dies, the play usually has Kohei try to fight Iemon in order to take revenge for Oiwa rather than being silenced, and that's how he dies. Them being tied to both sides of the door, being seen side by side on the fishing line and exacting revenge in tandem also carried over as symbolism for how Kohei continued to follow after Oiwa and help her in the afterlife.
I never watched or read the actual piece but in your statement, I only see Kohei being so loyal to her as a servant; Nothing more.
Beautiful
It is said that Oiwa actually existed in real life, and her actual story was so dreadful, it's no wonder that people intend to apease her spirit with ritual ceremonies - a tradition that remains to this very day. No joke.
I hope her spirit is at peace
Thank you TED-ED. Now I can't sleep peacefully anymore.
lmao they heared this
Watch the animation with Hiroshima in 1945
THEY HEARTED IT LMAO
@@anmlt Do you mean the anime movie called 'Barefoot Gen' ?
@@aditsaraff1526 nah, give me a sec
Oiwa's story is one of betrayal, murder, and vengeful spirits. Oiwa's enduring spirit seeks retribution for the injustice done to her and her father. This eerie narrative has captivated audiences for generations, making it a significant part of Japanese folklore and theater. Kit Brooks' retelling of Oiwa's ghostly revenge highlights the enduring power of this haunting story.👿👻
im so sorry but is this snapchat ai or is it just the two emojis at the end tripping me up
"ChatGPT please write a comment that will get lots of likes in a youtube video about Oiwa the Japanese Ghost"
her ghost type is onryo
@@brandonkite4414ayo😂😂
This was told very well and the animation: top-notch. Japanese ghost stories are really creepy and scary.
I feel really bad for the servant. He didn't deserve to get killed.
No witnesses...
No one deserved to die, even the wife didn't deserve to suffer violence... What are you saying 😂
i agree, poor man and so too Oiwa
I wonder if Kohei also got vengeance and Oiwa found her one true love in him
@@maxandlily6074he did it was him who compelled him to kill his father in law
Japanese stories are like German ones. And then everyone dies. The End. Now go to sleep.
and shakespeare (except twelth night)
I find it weird that there could have been zero bloodshed and a happy ending since they both wanted divorce anyways, but he went on a rampage just to get what everyone else was agreeing with from the start
True. Everything could've been done in a proper and legal fashion, but no, he insisted on murder being his final option. What a idiotic hothead, reminds me of a few relatives I had
There was a lot of stigma surrounding divorce at the time. So plotting a murder would have given him the justification he needed to remarry.
poor Oiwa, I'm feel so sorry for her, she seems very much like a "possible ancestor" of Sadako Yamamura, the famous ghost who comes out of television.
The inspiration for the ring??
maybe just maybe!
This version of the story was far more gruesome than the on told by SomethingScary. I never knew of it’s origins as a kabuki play; it seemed like many of these plays drew inspiration from real life events, such as the Tale of Yoarashi.
Omg I also heard it for the first time from something scary
I thought so too! i was wondering where I heard this story before
Tác giả và diễn viên của vở kabuki Oiwa đã chết trong vòng 5 năm kể từ khi vở kabuki này ra đời
i also heard it from snarled
Japanese people, love stories:- 🥰🥰😋🤗🤭
Ghost stories:- 🗿⚰️💀☠️⚱️

Dang he didn't want to get out of his marriage with oiwa so he killed his father in law then later changed his mind to leave oiwa and decided to dispatch her what a dispicable man @_@
I see the japanese has maintained the tradition of writing stuff that will give you chronic depression even till this day
This actually gave me goosebumps. Other than the narration and the animation, kuddos to the music!
Even though it's just a normal cartoon drawing, it's enough to scare me !!
Japan is really filled with amazing stories and story tellers.
I will never forget Oiwa's story. Thank you Ted Ed for making my Halloween memorable. :) Everything from the Shylock quote to the reference to contemporary culture was perfect. :)
That is the most honorable scariest Japan horror movie. Give it a five stars and a nomination award of success.
This is so cool. I love chilling and depressing it is. That's what makes good horror. Thank you Ted-Ed for bringing this story I have never heard of before to life.
Happy Halloween everyone!
The illustations were great. Too great
I feel bad for Oiwa. Proves no one notices your sadness until it’s too late.
I just saw the anime adaptation of Lady Oiwa (the one with the awesome Medicine Seller) and had to look into this story. So excited for this video!
Thank you TED ED FOR MAKING ME STAYING AWAKE ALL NIGHT
This is why i am scared of this type of ghost.
I don't want to come across creepy videos at night, but I also can't miss this one!
@Ted-Ed, you mentioned people adapting aiwas story after asking permission at her eliged grave. Were you guys able to ask permission for the production of this video?
what a queen an icon
Icon, legend, vengeful moment. I wasn’t scared I was simply in awe of Oiwa
We need more of these. They are so entertaining for me!
*sniff*...what a sad story! *sob*
Poor Oiwa ☹
Beautiful narration... Bravo!
One of the best and scariest ghost story ever made.
I can't watch a Japanese scary story because it is too potent.
It makes me scared gradually and difficult to forget.
Rest in peace, Oiwa-san😢
Wow
The Yotsuya Kaidan is my favourite Japanese ghost story ❤
Did you ask for her permission?😅 Thank you for the video🎉
I want to knowwww
I love these stories and how you guys make them cinematic. May Oiwa’s spirit be at peace.
Phenomenal story
I love TED-ed's mythic stories🥰
More and more plz😁
The sound design!!
❤ Awesome as always thanks
Looks like I'm not sleeping tonight 😅
i love this you guys should definitely do more
going for fishing after murder is comedy
I think this is the inspiration for the movie, The Grudge.
The story has some eerie similarity.
おいわさんってこんな話だったんだ、怖い🥶
Hey thanks for the ghost story!
GOD I love watching this series. THis one was especially gooood
You don't want to mess with a ghost.
I've watched a lot of video stories on this channel. But this is one of the most stunning stories that I like because it's perhaps an honor and thrill story 😆
Amazing video
Happy Halloween everyone.🎃
A chilling story made even scarier with the concept and presentation. Great job
I love when justice is served.
I heard of this story! rest in peace Oiwa!
thank you for changing the thumbnail I was terrified when my notification showed😭😭
Interesting story, first time hearing about it. 😊
Japan got scary, creepy but kind ghosts for no reasons
I need more like this video 😢
Intresting
Ok why did this genuinely make me scared
As long as you respect them they won't harm us. You don't need to fear them you just need to respect them and leave them alone - Me😂
Damn... that was cold. Could have divorced her inpeace tho
Much more sad than scary
An interesting 6 minutes...love the video...
That was a good story and a bit scary too
Amazing
I have test in 4 days and you come to scare me 😭
What a scary story😱
I'm impressed
great story
Edit:Not to be that person, but thanks for the likes
great story!
0:21 I thought the captions said 🍋
😭😭😭
I've heard of this story before but MAN is it my favourite Japanese ghost story (and only one I know lol). Anyone got any recommendations of Japanese ghost stories? Interested in others that I may not have heard of.
I find kuchisake Onna, teke teke, toire no Hanako, and aka manto to be creepy
Kashima-san is a good one. Though it is similar to Teke Teke
Try searching for Sharekowa
(I wish there were English subtitles...)
Ye, this made me to remember the Adventure Time fly's ghost episode. The fly came back as a ghost because of his unfinished business. Well, basically nearly all ghosts are like that, had some unfinished business, dead, and then strolling the world as a ghost.
Really scary 😱
Dam. Japan has such scary ghost stories.
Me being a complete scarredy cat : let's watch this video at 8pm
So Ju-on was based on Oiwa's story...
I hope Ted Ed got Oiwa's permission to make this video.
That was cool
We need more Japanese horror stories.
It's very similar to Edgar Allan Poe's short story 'Ligeia', where the narrator's second wife transforms into his first wife, the 'Lady Ligeia'.
Cool
chilling!
I saw somewhere that the play made an iconic scene where she would be brushing her hair and it would fall out.
I thought my phone had problems
That animation is top notch.
I remember seeing an anime version of this story
Can you make a TEDEd explaining the day of the dead and it’s history please! 🙏🏽
Happy Halloween 🎃!
Did you guys get Oiwa's permission to post this video? 😂
Yes, we did! We would never risk offending Oiwa
That's a good 😊👍🏼 joke it's true did they get permission to film Iowa👍🏼😊??
Nothing beats Japan ghost stories
@Ted-Ed What is that music. The story is so tragic, but that music sounds so good.
Who else turned on captions and read Iemon (e-uh-mon) as lemon?
Happy Halloween ! 🎃
I remember reading Jappanese mythology when I was 10 and reading this story happily and smiling
The music for this slaps
Good for Halloween
