      i just stopped wearing a watch entirely. haven't found a good replacement so i've gone watchless for over a year now.
      my apparantly completely unreasonable wishlist:
      E-ink display (nobody needs a 60hz hdr video capable watch, i mean c'mon)
      1 FULL week or more battery life
      music controls or a fully integrated music player(non-subscription)
      nfc for payment
      bluetooth to connect to phone (or earbuds if using integrated music player)
      IP68 water resistant
      No HR monitor, no step tracker, no sleep tracking, period tracking.
      No voice, camera or speaker, except for notifications/alarms/input feedback/haptics
      all that tracking does is suck the battery, and when i got a NATO strap on the monitoring is covered anyway.

    i still feel like a notification-centric color e-Ink smartwatch along the lines of the Pebble in terms of price and functionality would do really well

  • @SableLeaf
    @SableLeaf 4 місяці тому +8

    To be fair, the "entry price versus feature set" is a very strong factor as to why the trendy ones fell.

  • @NikMalov

    I'm honestly slightly offended to not see Pebble in the list - best E-Ink smartwatch not only of their time, but at least half a decade further on.

      If you watched the video you'll notice that we talked about the pebble. It is not eink nor is it epaper
      So we don't know where the offense is coming from

    • @NikMalov
      @NikMalov 4 місяці тому

      @@goodereader Fair point, I didn't get to the very last bit of the video with MIP mentions. I got confused by usage of Garmin Instinct images at the beginning, as if it was supposed to cover over energy-efficient screen technologies as well.

      Yeah for sure, we mentioned that the industry has alternatives, but splitting hairs... They are not epaper unfortunately.
      Nevertheless, it is a good unit, the pebble.

      @@goodereader Well arguably it is epaper. Epaper are displays that give the appearance of paper, which the transflective LCD effectively does.

    The king was Amazfit Bip original 40 days or sometimes more battery life. I'm still using it after 6 years. Built in GPS, Compass with Altitude, Press etc. was a real Pebble killer.

      It's great for "always on display" usages and increased battery life. It's just that the public prefers shiny flashy stuff and avoids tech that looks older while costing the same. Too often we hear about complaints that E-ink should be half the price of tablets for example.
      It is gaining traction in the public sector though, I've noticed that Macau uses epaper posters that display the position and estimated arrival of every bus. Assisted by solar. HK and Singapore still use LCD. One person said Macau cheaped out by avoiding LCD 🤦

    • @christill
      @christill 4 місяці тому +2

      @@yensteel That perception will change in the public as more people get sick of toxic social media and look to slow down a bit.
      And I think it will get much bigger in the public sector as you said. That’s where the main success will be for the next few years.

  • @coachafella

    Thanks for that thorough summary. Sad. This tech seems to have a lot of advantages. A shame it hasn't gotten better design focus as they nearly all were just quirky sort of half-hearted efforts. Hope to see better versions in the future.

    I've had my Skagen for a couple years now and it's the best watch ever. The only part that bugs me is I frequently press the side button and it has a 3 minute timeout when it should have 30 seconds so I'm not glancing at the menu screen half the time and the hands are meant to move out of the way on purpose but usually it's annoying. If those 2 things were fixed it would be 10/10 and if it had better sleep tracking 11/10. I get compliments on it all the time.

    I think it would work for fitness bands, but maybe not smartwatches. However, with the asking price, it's not surprising they didn't catch on and died. They should not have been as expensive. Perhaps someone will return to the idea with a more reasonable asking price for fitness-focused watches with some smartwatch features.

    this proves that the e-ink display can be the irregular shape, so why the e-ink readers do not have a screen with a large R angle, just like the style of modern smartphones, with an edge to edge bezel ?
