A fun bit on tinkering. I will keep all the parts so I could change the XLS back if I wanted to down the line. I just had fun working out whats needed and making it happen.
I can understand why something like this was done back in the day, doing everything to improve the one car you have. I’m not sure why you would make a very sought after car a “bitsa” these days when you already have the next generation car sat next to it. Having said that “because you can” is a perfectly valid reason 😂
I have a weakness for the xls body. Can you put a xls body on the pro at easily? I am thinking of getting a pro cat and a replacement xls body plus wing and put in on a nib pro cat…
Are you aware that with the carbon rear shock tower on the XLS you can get rid of that trash wing wire and use the nice Schumacher solid wing mounts? The wing mounts alone is worth getting the carbon shock tower.
Looks good, interesting video, but why bother? Are you going to be racing the buggy in a 'vintage' series or something? If it's just to go on the shelf I wouldn't bother, but that's my opinion...
Yeah, absolutely love Gavin and RCKicks but this is a head scratcher for sure. As was said intresting for sure but why do it? Might be ok if a person had 2 XLS cars but now you lose the representation of the evolution. Like I always say "Do what ya want, you're going to anyway".
Why, like you say because it’s interesting to see what’s different between the XLS and Pro Cat. It was interesting working out all the design and part changes. You can also see why these changes had been made back in the day and how the designers used parts from other cars to improve the XLS but keep the costs down. It also shows it’s possible to upgrade an XLS and shows what parts are required making it an easy to do the conversion for someone who does vintage racing. £66 including the ARB is a nice upgrade for the XLS as it really does simplify the rear of the car. Also it shows you can take a Pro Cat kit and change it into an XLS. This is great for people who missed the XLS boat and can’t afford the XLS kit prices these days. The big one, because you can, nobody has done it on UA-cam and it was just fun for me:) Don’t forget I have one aspect of owning RC cars that most of you don’t, to make RC video content for others entertainment. I think that was a big enough reason to give it a go.
Was this a cheap way of upgrading your XLS back in the day rather than buying the newer car? Would be interesting to see it run and learn what differences you feel to the handling though the cold weather now would have an effect.
Absolutely, back in the day this was quite a common conversion, I ran my XLS like this just last weekend, it felt more planted, less twitchy and generally more predictable.
Yep. With all the option parts fitted, my XLS is more advanced the pro cat in stock form. The pro cat rear upgrade feels like it came from a Schumacher team driver mod. It’s all parts from the Top Cat so some cleaver fella messed around and came up with it by the feel of it. I could be wrong mind.

Good to show how it can be done if you wanted to do such a conversion :)

Very nice Video! Please do a comparison between the xls and your XL SWB. This would be very interesting!
Noted!
Allmost finished them Gav, you didnt put the two screws in the top of the rear gearbox case. Step 23 👍
Done now :)
@@RCKickschannel easy mistake to make. Looking forward to seeing what times they set if you get them out on the bugrat track 😎

It could be changed back if needed as I have all the parts. Not that I'm looking to sell the XLS or Pro Cat.

I think I have the rear wing parts from the Cougar as I upgraded it to carbon and you cant use the flexible wing. Nice one.
You can also use the top holes in the camber link bracket to drop the whole bracket down and keep the correct roll centre for the Procat rear end.
You're doing all that work, are you going to race the XLS?
I don't race RC cars.

I have to agree. Why upgrade the XLS when you have the Procat to show the evolution. You might as well buy a Pro cat and put the XLS body on it.

Absolutely Gavin, well explained and well said! Cheers buddy!

Very interesting to know. Thanks guys.
Nice Cat. Soooooo when will we see another backyard Raceday? You have lots of cars that need to turn some laps.
It’s winter in the UK so as soon as things warm up and dry out. I’ve got about eight cars to set times on.
Nice!!
