Here are some tips from a snowboarder who grew up snowboarding on East Coast Canada where the run is literally a skating rink is 1. always FIND THE TEXTURE! 2. don't go fast like you would on groomed run, I made that mistake years ago trying to beat my speed record and BOOM, slipped and broke my tailbone and ended my Season early. 3. avoid the middle section of the run because that's where most skiers or boarders go down, hence, all the snow are pushed to the side, so always board on the side. 4. wear a freaking ass pad so you don't break your tailbone.
Fellow east coaster. I love the run edges on icy days. Little powder piles from everyone going down the middle.

The 4th one must be the most important. It's strange that not many people in NA have these kind of protection pads.
It is always lovely to run into the solid ice covered by 1mm of caster sugar....
I live in Sweden, and 70% of the days we get hard conditions and ice... The best tip in my experience is to buy a board with edge disruptions (li.e. ib, Gnu, Jones, YES) huuuuuuge difference, these boards are ice specialists, never slip and never fall after riding these boards. And of course, a good technique as Malcolm shows. Good video!
This is why your channel is so good - riding icy conditions is never sexy or fun but it's definitely real world. I was in the Alps a month ago and most of the time there had icy conditions (no fresh snow either) so this video is super helpful.
I live on the USA East coast and can confirm that there are plenty of icy conditions to contend with.

Malcolm talking about the East Coast, didn't know I was in this video haha. We're just built different ;) Once we're in amazing conditions we just crush it.
To me it doesn’t matter how good I become, I find it best to just respect Mother Nature and not try to push and take risks on ice, I just take it slow and not pick up to much speed. Another thing, someone mentioned breaking their tailbone, always wear protective gear, ie, helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and Last but not least, a butt pad to protect those hips and tailbone. I find the solid knee pads are better than the soft ones. I fell on ice and still bruised me knee with soft knee pads, use the hard ones.
You just never know when you’re going to catch an Edge and it’s always better to have some protection than none at all. Awesome video Malcolm, Great tip for riding the sides on the trials too, there’s usually more snow and less ice on the sides of the slope on an icy day.
Malcolm you're the best! Spent all my free time during the ski-trip watching your videos and working on my posture. Every time I went downhill I always reminded myself to keep my shoulders in line with the board and always stick to going in the S shape, it's harder than it seems and going back into old habits is very easy if you don't pay attention. Watching you do these things so effortlessly really motivates me to keep improving and hopefully become more confident going down the mountain.
Oh and I'm very happy that these videos aren't just another bro-ey generic snowboarder dude by a guy in his mid 30's that refuses to grow up. But by an actual adult that really loves the sport and wants others to do the same. Sorry it came off a little rude but you really are unique in the snowboarding videos that I've been looking at.

If you can break out the stiff, full camber board for the hard pack / ice days it makes a massive difference.
As someone who loves to carve, I found myself continuing to try to lean in turns on the icy stuff. But keeping my weight deliberately right above the board helped so much! It means if the board skitters you don't immediately sit or kneel down (or fall fiat on your face! ) and helps increase the edge pressure as you're pushing the board straight *down*.
And as you said, squat!
I also find that if squatting on the toe edge starts to lift the edge, drive the rear knee towards the snow.
Watch where you're going and maintain good fundamentals in difficult times. What an explanation! You truly speak and teach from experience. And then flex with one single take.
My partner and i are out now in the Swedish mountains at -25c. Things are definitely icy and we had to result to long plows down the long steep hills. Fearing the loss of edge and sliding down on our backs/bellys.
Tomorrow we will look for less incline and hopefully less ice. But this will help us train our fundamentals to better combat the hill.

I went there on 21st January (just after several days of snow), so I timed it right. However since then it's hardly had any fresh snow, until that is, the last few days when it's dumped a significant amount, so hopefully you'll be fine. 👍.
We've just had some snow, and they will have too, temps are going up alot over the weekend, but it should still be pretty good 👍

😀Ice, that's not ice. When you go arse-over-tit and don't stop until you hit something, then you sit up and brush the dust off the top, and you have that Foxes Glacier Mints solid blue shining back at you... that's ice. That's also when you invest in a crash pants!
This video is perfect timing. I taught myself how to snowboard this year and the snow where I’m at has been fantastic the entire year. In the last week though it all turned to ice and I feel like I’m right back where I started a few months ago (just with a lot more bruises).

I’m wondering, do you do your snowboard maintenance yourself? When so, could you do a video on waxing and edge tuning for those off days? Since you’re mentioning a lot that your edges are key in most situations. Like in this video on icy slopes, or on how to avoid tripping on your edges.

I came across this video after falling down around dozen times on the icy ground, and it was my first experience of this kind and I couldn’t understand what am I doing wrong… and this video really helps and explains that and how to fix it, thanks a million! These are unluckily the most common conditions in Spain, so very helpful video! Painful to learn but it's actually very good to pick up the technique right. After that, any kind of snow looks amazingly easy.
The best ice is moonscape in the spring or bulletproof after a thaw and freeze cycle ( day to night skiing), don't forget your earplugs and mouthguard. All of your points help, key thing is stay stacked over your edge with proper body positioning, maintain an even pressure on your edge, glide through your turn. It also helps if you are pulling a sled (chain engaged) with a patient ; )
This looks like a good day out here in Eastern Canada (especially here in Ontario). I've seen Blue Mountain freezing into a literal skating rink.. impossible to get any edge or carving in..
Fellow Ontario boarder here! It's my first season and I exclusively go during night hours for the refreeze. The conditions in the video look amazing to me bc I've only ever known ice...

Thankyou for this Malcolm; practicing in Romanian this season and this video helps a lot! I have a request for you: could you do a video on drills to get comfortable with speed? I enjoy making short turns on steeps a lot but on flats, while i can make long turns, i tend to brake hard as soon as i pick a little speed. hi malcolm. we were snowboarding on the other side of the mountain at Les Sybelles last week. we had rain in the evening until midnight and some snow early in the morning. the worst conditions possible. the rain melted the slopes, the cold of the night freezed the slopes and the snow covered the ice. in the morning everything was hard ice covered by some snow. skidding was taking forever before stopping.
always be prepared, sharpen the edges if needed. and rocker boards don't really help in this situations
Good posture is key, equal pressure is key, getting down low is key, keeping your turns nice and smooth is key, Malcome Moore is key
I find magne-traction to be the biggest game changer for ice for me. I have whatever the Rossignal equivalent is, and it doesn't make ice pleasant, but it does allow you to turn and slow down in places you normally would slip out, which on the ice coast that can be 80% of the run on a bad day.
Broke my AC joint in my shoulder last week falling on an ice pack. Here are some of what i've learned from that. 1. Get the right gear for the conditions. Not saying i have fallen cause of my snowboard but it was a rental piece of shit that did not have sharp edges so it definitly does not help. A board with magne-traction would have helped a lot. 2. Wear protections even if you're advanced. ice is no joke. 3. play according to the condition. this year i only had the chances to go snowboard two weeks so i pushed it a lot even tho the conditions were not great and boom i crashed. go slower even if it a small season for you, it will be better than injuring yourself. Right on time. I'm in Kaprun right now and the lower pistes are iced up in the morning because of high temps and rain.
Had it during a whole week always at the end of the day (tired) and a part I couldn’t avoid going home. Hated it. Rocked my confidence hard to the point I just wasn’t having fun anymore.

I'm from East Coast US, and I wish you did teachings out here, I've watched many of your vids and you seem to be all about just wanting to increase the love for the sport and activity where most people out here have been super terrible for the most part. First time I ever went snowboarding was out in PA (Pocono I believe it was ~10 yrs ago) with a buddy and we hit the mountain on the first week of the season. Gave me some tips on the bunny for a few mins and then we went up, had zero idea the ice was so bad here due to it being soft where I practiced for the few minutes. About 10 mins into it for my first time, hit a nasty ass edge and shattered my wrist. Sadly I haven't ever touched it since although would love to find a proper teacher who loves it like yourself. Feel that's probably a huge difference maker.
East Coast US snowboarder here. We get lucky some days but the ice is notorious.
Had a different experience with narrow boards on icy pistes. It might be easier to tilt over, but on really steep icy pistes your toe "drag" will just lever your board off the piste if there is now snow but just plain ice. Had to opt for a wider board *and* go for a duck stance to not get wiped out regularly on steep (60%+) icy pistes. Yes, you could just go slower so you do not have to lean in the board so hard, but who wants to do that 🙂
Boards or skis, it doesn't matter. Sharpen your edges to razor sharp. Stay near the edges of the slope if you can, and do everything slowly and with deliberation. Once you have mastered ice, your overall skiing will massively improve.

Coastal BC deals with ice, given our milder weather it really depends where the freezing level is. Especially if your night riding and all the runs get soft in the sun, then as soon as the sun goes down the temperatures plunge to freezing and it's mostly ice. I wish they groom for night skiing but they don't. I bruised my ribs once going like 3km/h, LOL, I was coming to a stop but came on top some ice and my board just slipped underneath me and I was parallel to the ground for a split second and landed on my front and I had the wind knocked out of me for a few minutes.
I haven't done night riding since. This was 2020.

When i started catching an edge on a mellow slope was painful, now i'm intermediate and i almost feel likes it's part of the sport, and if i am not fallling two-tree times per day It means i'm not pushing myself hard enough, could you do a video on avoiding injuries/mindset & so on?

Hi Malcom very nice to show what to do on icy slopes. So what do you do when you lose grip all together? I was in schladming last week, not really icy but I lost my grip on a slope and because it was still very unriden very smooth (those nice ripples after the piste bully) I sored down on my bottom. (And crashed into the ice edge of the piste but that is not my point) how can I slow myself down in such a position, no lose snow and no buckles yet… love your videos and learning all the time.
Good tips as usual, but like you said, I was hoping for the silver bullet of a secret technique, which i already knew wasn't available. I had 3 trips last season, all of which were really icy, so much so I had a crisis of confidence that I'd forgotten how to board at all. Thankfully I was In France over New Year in fresh pow & all the love came flooding back. Off to Switzerland next week & it's looking good to go there too, so hopefully no ice techniques needed.

Fair advice. What I need to know is how to handle those slush pisted runs which freeze overnight into corrugated hell. Wait until afternoon when the skiers have scraped some slushy off? When I see you doing it I'll believe it.
Magnetraction helps but you have to be aggressively edging with some speed to make the most of it on ice and that's when losing it starts to hurt! You don't often have access to traction edge profiles on rental gear.
I had a great time at stowe this past march. You should come to NE, something about the low ley bed and breakfast places the new england towns its a whole different experience. March is the new best month to depend on. Used to be february. Hopefully it is again w el nino setting in

I had to rewatch this after opening night on man made ice ..... errr snow. I find I'm constantly pushing just a little too hard on steeper icy runs to get an edge in a sometimes it's just not going to happen.
Hi Malcolm, great video. Question: I have a Travis Rice Pro HP Blunt 2020 and have been boarding for 20 years on and off, I ride goofy and wondered if you have any tips on binding width and angle. I am 178cm and 88kg.
Thanks for this. Riding ice is horrible, but it's a fact of life. And for a lot of people (myself included), who can only go on a trip once a year, that may be the reality of your week, so you just have to deal as best you can!
Regarding magne-traction: I'm not a fan either, I also find it grabby. However, I LOVE Jones boards. They use 'traction-tech' which is a mellower version (3 point rather than 5). It still gives me extra grip on ice, but it's never felt grabby to me (I have 3 Jones boards, and have tried 3 others, lol). And they have spoon, so less catchy too :)
Hit Tahoe last weekend after a rainstorm, it was ICY AF, my brother teased me for squatting quite a bit lol, I am glad to see that was one of your recommendations....

Every bad wipeout the last few years have been hitting icy patches on my toe edge. Board slides out and I face plant or break a wrist or slam my knees. I assume I am just riding too upright on my toe edge for those conditions. For me, it is almost easier knowing the whole slope is rock hard. When you are riding as if conditions are good and then hit ice, the slams are real!
My local ski hill got a great early start for the season, but last weekend had a couple of warmer days that turned the soft snow into ice. Like you said I was hoping for a magic solution, but I guess it just means I'll need to ride differently and have less fun.

My friends call me "The Ice Hound"... we had a 5" powder day, there was run we kept lapping which was pretty windblown in spots. I kept "seeking" out the ice so carve the crusty stuff. It's true, I love the hard stuff :D
One tip for people who are comfortable snowboarding. Make sure the edges of your board are sharp. You can sharpen them relatively cheaply at a nearby store. It makes a world of difference and makes it so much more enjoyable to board anywhere.

Whats causing the skidding on the steeps, I had to deal with that today? Also yea its taking me a while to make that edge change from front side skidding to heal side, but more I do the better I get use to it.

Thanks for the vids, been watching them after each day of snowboarding in alp dhuez this week. The last couple of days I hit some reds slopes and if I come to a stop on the slope I find it difficult to get going. I feel like to go from stationary to the first edge change the board has to point straight down the slope and it never feels stable and I often fall. Once I get going and traverse then I can make the early edge changes much easier. Any suggestions? Thanks
From the stop you'll need to push your front hip (so if you're regular the left side of the hip) over the board which will allow the left knee to bend over the board releasing grip and pivoting the board. The back hip and knee can follow after, but this separation between front leg to back leg is key to being able to move on from a standstill. 👍
Re knees out - what if you’re riding a cambered board or one of the yes range with tapered MidBite?

Timely tutorial video. Thanks. +2C this AM and drizzle/frizzle. Temp slowly dropping. Now heavy wet snow. 15-20cm forecasted. Forecast is for low -11C and high of -4C. Guess it will be at best real hardpack. At worst. ICE. Beats rain and slush.

Nice tips, thanks! Is this new Nidecker Gamma? How do you find it in this particular icey condition? And wouldn't a stiffer full camber board perform better?
Yeah it's surprisingly good, but yes, the apx will likely be better. However as an asym powder board the regular gamma appealed to me more, I wasn't really factoring overall edge hold into my decision between the two!
I was wondering if that was the Gamma! I’ve been looking at it but worried about boot out with my size 11, but I think Malcom wears a size 12? Makes me confident to pull the trigger on the board
East coaster here in US aka icecoast. One of my biggest keys I've learned is to go straight over ice, don't try to turn and especially don't side slip. That's a recipe for slipping out.
Hey Malcolm, I’m curious how this compares with the down unweighted turns? I tried those on icey conditions in Austria last weekend and it completely revolutionised my riding! First, thanks for that. Second, I was carving on ice sometimes and had complete control on ice. I practiced these up unweighted turns earlier, so I will try that on ice too but the control of the down unweighted turns seemed unmatched. Cheers
In very icy conditions I find the down unweighted aren't as good, as you're trying to get grip that just isn't there. Its so difficult to quantify how icy a piste is, but essentially this is about turning a skid into grip, which you'll need to do when it is very icy. If you're able to drop down, push against the board and have it grip, awesome - however if its too icy for that then I would do more of the above methods. But ultimately if you're riding better by doing something, then you're doing something right

How's the Nidecker Gamma? Opinions on asymmetrical boards in general? I don't like the idea of different sidecuts but never tried
I had the Yes The Greats before and I LOVED having an asymmetric board. Carving heel side was so damn easy. I was able to carve heelside switch better than most people toes side
Good edges is probably 80% of it with the remaining 20% for smoother control of my board. I don't even bother anymore going on ice without perfect edges

Hard snow does no favors for beginners, that's for sure. Speaking from experience. Many gets deterred from coming back because they don't know the difference between powder and hard snow, and falling on them is prime discouragement.

Hi Malcom, I’m a beginner and have been using your videos alot to get better! I’ve improved alot trough your videos, but one thing I constantly struggle with is skidding after turns, especially from heel-edge to toe-edge. I feel like my back leg is not following along, and no matter how much I try to focus on leaving that thin line on the snow and using the knee streering method, I always just drag my board from edge to another to almost full stop. It’s hard to maintain speed as well. Any tips?
I have exactly the same problem, especially on steeper slopes. I can hold the heel-edge quite good but after doing a heel-to-toe-turn I start skidding a lot and loose the flow. I find it hard to control my speed if I try not to skid so much on my toe edge but If I skid on my toe edge I often slow down more than I actually want to.
@@trixn4285it could be you're rushing your turn. In some of Malcolm's videos he talks about where to apply pressure on turns and doing it too early can ruin it. You may also be just instinctively over rotating your upper body dragging you more into the turn faster and sooner. I struggle with the same on steeper parts because the instinct is to turn quickly to cut speed. That's part of the progression to get comfortable with a bit more speed so that even when your trying to turn faster, you're not turning too fast that you skid or even end up in a board slide.
Also check your angle, perhaps you're not tilted enough for the speed of turn your trying to do so you end up pushing the board to turn.
Day 12 last season after losing a lot of snow to rain I thought I was a hero riding hard completely lost it carving way too hard as I hit ice beneath the snow ploughed through barriers and broke 3 ribs - end of season it took about 10 weeks to come right and slept on the couch on my back for 6 weeks. Recommendation- ride to the conditions don’t try to be a hero like me and driving my sorry ass home in pain with my tail between my legs 🤙

I personally find that wider boards are better on ice. While it takes more effort to make edge changes, it gives you more finesse. Plus, having your weight further back from the edge puts more pressure on the edge when you engage it, giving you better grip.
I'm not sold on that theory, but at least you're having success with it!
But the wider the board the more flex out from the foot/binding ptressure point and why a narrower board bites better. That's physics, more direct and more stable pressure,, off course if you feel it gives you confidence with a wide platform then that's ok. The best way is to ride a carving race board, they edge even on ice like a train if you have the control ability

I encountered a sheet ice slope which was about 100meters, I said no way. Lucky there was a chair lift I just went past. Booted out and walked back up (this was at the end of the day, I was too tired to tackle that) some times u just gotta play it safe.
I did the same exact thing once. A steep slope that's just a wall of ice is not worth it no matter how short.

The conditions you showed honestly are fine... Do you have any tips for when you're, like, at the top of a black run, there's a steep drop and it's all iced up without any of that light snow? Like, my board just simply will not grip? I literally cannot get the edge into the ice and it'll just skid/have me fall. My board isn't new but I keep it well waxed/edges sharp but it is a negative camber and really quite wide. Appreciate it.
Reminds me of that time I was on a very steep blue run and it was just a wall of ice. I looked down and the skiers we're having a hard time getting down. Me? I hiked back to the chair and took the green run down LOL
There's no magic solution, like I say, ice sucks, sometimes you'll just have to skid over it.

additional tip: get a board with a cambered profile and a directional shape. Went from a Salomon Assasin Twin Tip to an Amplid Morning Glory and the difference in grip is huge
Yeah, also most salomon boards have a pretty crap sidecut that won't help, the dancehaul is pretty decent though
I have a 2015 Assassin, one reason I hardly ride it is because it's lousy on hard pack (and flat basing). I would have hoped they improved it, but others on the internet complain about the same problems with recent models.
@@ejhayes76 second weekend on my amplid morning glory and couldnt be happier, still can reccommend to give it a try. Not only the grip on firm piste, also turn initiation, and best of all the surfy feel in slushy snow. The salomon is fine for what it is, but i needed sth different
@@QuarktaschemitSenf cool. Amplid's have a good reputation. Unfortunately, they're hard to find to demo, at least where I am in the Western US. I'm reluctant buying anything without riding it first.
