  • Orang Putih Cakap Bahasa Iban, Orang Putih Bejako Iban! I spent the morning with my good Iban friend Wilfred as he tried to teach me the Iban Language.
    Sarawak is home to numerous ethnicities and many different languages. I am always interested to learn a new Borneo language. After living in Malaysia for 10 years I have learned some of the many different languages in the country.

    I am Iban Language teacher. All I can say that your pronounciation is on point and well done. Impressive.
    Matahka lengan is eating but it it not a word in iban to represent “eating”. it is just an idioms. Then “ngepan” is Iban tradition cloth. It’s supposed to be ngempat buk mean cutting hair.
    As a beginner. Well done! And keep learning

    • @v17zimmerman
      @v17zimmerman Рік тому

      Ehh... Cutting in Iban is "Nguntin"... Hair is "Buk"... If u talking to someone nowadays, I recommend u to say this... "Nguntin buk" instead using Ngepat buk... Ngepat is traditional language... How do u say Scissors in iban?? It's "Guntin"... Better to use this word... Anyway, it's not to late to learn something new... 😊😊

    - It should be "manuk pansuh". "Ayam pansuh" would be the Malay equivalent.
    - As for "gawai"... it simply means "festival".
    - Among the Kalaka-Saribas Ibans (which is the basis for the official Iban dialect as in the Johor Malay as the basis for the national language (Malay)), "pinggai" means the specific larger plate which is used to serve rice. The normal eating plates would be "capak".
    - I would think the Iban word for "chopstick" would be "penyepit" although there are already other meanings too.
    - The word "sudu' " is also used but it is a borrowed word. So, "siduk" is the actual Iban word for "spoon".
    - "Matah ka lengan" literally means "break the arm" to mean "eating/having a meal". Kinda like the American "break a leg" to mean something "good luck" and voila! Bob's your uncle. 🤣🤣
    - "Serga" is a word learned from the missionaries.
    Nick... good way of holding the chopstick! You like to add drama when you speak Iban. 😂😂 You must find us Kalaka-Saribas (the Saribas would be slightly more exciting than the Kalaka Ibans) Iban very boring then. 🤣🤣 Happy birthday, Nick!

    NGEMPAT TALI - CUTTING ROPE
