As a person born and currently living in CR and raised in nicaragua, ill drop my two cents. Nicaragua has a very different culture and it is more traditional -culturally and socially speaking- than other countries in Central America. Which means people's sense of humor is different, sarcasm is widely used, some sellers may come off as more pushy for foreigners, people dont follow most rules, guys will flirt with you, tattoos on a woman are stared at (i have many) but the people in general are very friendly, helpful, hardworking and they will always make a big deal about a foreigner appreciating their country. They love it !!Nicaraguans are very nationalists and embracing their culture and food is the way to get to their heart. Cultural manifestations are also still very intact, making it very authentic. Unfortunately, political situations have brought a shadow over its reputation, and not only for what happened in 2018, but also in the 70's. However it is still a very safe country to visit, even for solo traveler. And im saying this having visited about 24 countries, 95% of them by myself, including egypt and jordan, which most women would fear of visiting. As it was mentioned in the video, you HAVE to use common sense travelling ANYWHERE, be it man or woman. National police and road officials are a pain in the butt but this is a more complicated topic. In general, the best way to understand nicaragua is to know that this is a country with people that has always been through constant change: wars, dictatorships, earthquakes, hurricanes, revolutions, poverty, etc. All this affects the perspective nicaraguans have of life and making a living. I recommend, please dont try to negotiate too much while there. Nicaragua is cheap for foreigners, but for people living there it is not. They are having a hard time. Booking a tour may be their only blessing for that day. Anyways, do visit and enjoy. Roads are much better than Costa Rica!!!!!

Hey Michael, thanks for talking about Nicaragua my wife's country. I think a lot of tourists will love it there. My advice is get out of Managua as soon as possible. The rest of the country is friendly and beautiful. Also a few tips, they accept American dollars but the money must not have any marks or rips on the bill or it will not be accepted. Also when you spend dollars you receive change in Cordada's. Most ATM's will give you money in either currency you want. I would only use ATM's at banks, no where else. I have many other tips but not today, also San Juan del Sur is my favorite place in the country.....
Yes! It is possible depending on what you want to see. From the nearest biggest city in CR(Liberia) to The nearest town in Nicaragua(San Juan del Sur) it may take you about 5 hours, including paperwork at the border.

I love nica. 1.Food is better and a great value. Fresh produce everywhere. 2. Public Transport, driver and car rental are SO MUCH EASIER in Nica. 3. The culture is very inviting. I was fed, taken to homes, met family. 4. Every country deals with color and race their own way, so no judgement. Nica people never made an issue. Always felt like just another guest. Very nice. 5. I grew up in what was labeled "the most dangerous city in America" at times. Nica is like Disneyland. Nobody really bothers you. Everybody is just going about life handling their business. That's the best I can describe it. They are not thinking about you. Always felt safe. Actually, the only time my street radar went up was in Costa Rica. It wasn't for myself, but for some naive European girls I befriended. There was a local tica guy we were all hanging with and this dude revealed himself to be a really angry, frustrated kind of guy. I picked up on it immediately, but the girls were kinda clueless. I made sure they didn't end up on the cover of some newspaper and gave them a little game on what to look out for, as I've even had people look out for me when traveling and pull me to the side. Nica is awesome and there is something for everybody.
Your recommendation for someone who escapes Seattle gloom Dec thru end of March. I speak fluent spanish, lived and working in Colombia for 19 years. My number 1 priority is a place I can run without having packs of dogs or random dogs come after me. I know,,, not easy to find in Latin America. I need to ability to go on runs up to 16 miles. Prefer to avoid places with tons of expats so Granada, and San Juan Del Sur don't really interest me as a place to be based. I also have to have excellent reliable internet as I consult online and everything is with video, sometimes for large groups geographically located around the US.
Pleae note travlers can be impacted by govt especially if a return traveler. Some of us banned from entry because of social media posts...even if not directly critical or political.
@@jass79galo if anyone does have something even slightly political on the social media, clean it up before going to NI. It's a beautiful country with wonderful people and well worth the trip. I worked with a school on Isla Ometepe for several years
