    This is very informative and helpful. "Original" and "First" are often used to refer to the other. I think when it comes to identifying pressings, the US manufacturers gummed us up today with their regional plants and multiple press runs. Discogs is a cacophony of confusing deadwax entries and duplicate entries. Probably the UK had less plants. Japan is very simple.

    Yes, major artists do change the music upon repress. Most of the albums I like don't have a second pressing as they weren't that popular. Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Evelyn Champaign King, the Deele, etc. all messed with the versions of hits that were put on represses of their albums. Sometimes it's the single version, edit of the 12", new sax solo, new mix, live version, etc.

    I heard those heavy PVC sleeves actually put a haze on the vinyl record as well. I prefer the lightest sleeve and yes with a flap to keep the dust out.

    If you got a RCM go OG. If not and just starting get a reissue it will have less surface noise. After I invested in a RCM, I love buying older used albums.

    Atlantic withdrew and destroyed many of the Bob Ludwig hot mix copies. Initial press was probably 100K. Many with record changers also threw them out because they "skipped".

    I really like this video and I subbed to your channel! I do disagree a bit in regards to VinylMe Please. I can't speak to the other one - but VMP vinyl is definitely worth something in a lot of cases - for example that Story of the Grateful Dead box came out for $400 and it goes for well over $1,000 now...and for good reason - there are some rare Dead LPS and color variants in there that you can't get anywhere else or if you find the OG its gonna cost as much as the box. VMP does let you choose what you get to a point, you can swap out if what they picked isn't what you like and you can cancel and re start at any time so there is no commitment get what you want and then cancel - you actually don't even have to be a member to buy from them but you do get perks. I have some really sick INDIE Color Variants from them (Lee Fields, Thee Sacred Souls) that are less then 500 made - those are gonna be worth a lot more then $34 in the years to come. The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby is EXTREMELY hard to find an OG and they re issued it and even that is worth over $100 now. Might want to recheck VMP - but you are right - nothing beats a GOOD record store!

      Very interesting reading what you're saying, I think VMP because they were kind of the first have stayed on the tip of my tongue a bit more and my experience with them is a fair few years old, I think I'm expressing more at the whole idea of it rather than the actual one and there's also a whole other conversation about exclusives pressings of things that aren't available to everyone which creates a weird little microclimate or pockets of record buying which shouldn't really be a thing and definitely something I'll discuss more in the next videos, very interesting points though and definitely something I'll take on board. Thank you!

      Color variants are not where the value is and they probably won't go up. Pictures discs are a definite no-no.

    An interesting and informative intro. to the uninitiated in the vinyl community. You were right to highlight the potential damage caused by heavy duty PVC album sleeves. I have quite a large collection with many housed in such sleeves. I've never had an issue with matt/card sleeves but certainly a lot of 70s/80s light laminated covers can fuse themselves as you demonstrated. That said, the PVC can help with shelf wear. It would be good if you could do a posting on storage. As you know, vinyl must never be laid flat inside its sleeve. A problem I've lately encountered is stacking too many discs onto each other on the shelves. A rather juicy early Schifrin LP I have, started to form ridges on the sleeve. I immediately removed it from the PVC sleeve and shifted it onto a less densely packed shelf. That I'm afraid was what discouraged many punters from investing in records vs. CDs i.e. storage difficulties.

    • @tastyrecordsuk
      @tastyrecordsuk  Рік тому

      Excellent point about the Matt heavy card sleeves they do seem to be unaffected which is great and the shelf wear can be chronic on them so any sleeve will help there, thank you!

      @@tastyrecordsuk Just a brief(ish) follow up. I discovered, to my horror, on Friday that all the vinyl lined against my outside wall had got damp. Blame it on the unseasonably cold weather or whatever, there's a lesson to be learnt. It looks like a lot of the damage is buckling to the sleeves but when you multiply this it becomes depressing. As I said, storage is everything when it comes to vinyl.

    You may want to add some comments if you can, mention new pressings from analogue or MoFi mastered from original tapes or in MoFi’s case clean remaster using one step digital process for $40-80.00.

    I guess the vinyl revival has hit the mainstream. A few years ago you wouldn't price anything down. 90's presses are crap so that actually would drive demand down slightly.

      Youve got to think, a good record stylus is made from diamond the hardest substance on the planet and it is cutting through a soft plastic. While it may wear through the stylus slightly more it isnt worth worrying about. In my opinion of course!

    8 out of 10 new remasters I have bought this year have been badly warped and severely damaged -- even vinyl coming out of Abbey Road. Often, brand new vinyl is uncleanably clogged up with dirt or paper splinters from the paper sleeves, or has severe deep scratches as if the vinyl has been kicked along the floor of the pressing plant. Have also noticed albums bound so tightly in polywrap that it has warped the record. There is a major UK record chain that seems to have an enormous stock of warped and mispressed vinyl. All I can say is INSIST on opening and checking what you have bought in the shop before you leave! :0/

      In the last year it I have found new albums. Being very very bad. Like 5 out of 10 go back for pitting, warping, or just a noise pressing. At 40 dollars all new records should be in poly innersleeves. The QC is a joke at the moment

    I’m sorry to be beating a dead horse, but I have to say there is way to much emphasis on the condition of the jacket. When I was purchasing most of my collection I never dreamed of resale value, it was just not considered, consequently I have wear and tear on outer sleeves but the vinyl is pristine. I winced every time you pulled an unsleeved LP out of a protected jacket.

    • @tastyrecordsuk
      @tastyrecordsuk  Рік тому

      I think we're more keen on jacket condition from a retail perspective if you know what I mean, we also have the inner sleeve with the opening pointing out so the record can be easily removed to inspect, otherwise we have people who may not be as dextrous as us pulling sleeves in and out and causing seam splits/damage, it's definitely there though

  • @ForSunday
    @ForSunday Рік тому +1

    Lost records to PVC outgas damage that destroys record surfaces, makes them go all cloudy and the surface noise is way high. If you tightly pack a load of thos PVC sleeves together than you will ruin records in quick fashion.

    most OG's are more money than later reissues unless some kind of a deluxe boxset of demos etc are put out with it. I have some 200Gram OG's pre70's Dont believe all 180gr are the reason not to buy something. You're talking about Hype Stickers because back in the day they didnt advertise the weight of the record

    • @janedoe6350
      @janedoe6350 Рік тому +1

      If you have to use sleeves, use Polythene (PE) and not the Poly-vinyl chloride (PVC). The latter smell like paint and is a very similar material to records.
      So if you use PVC sleeve you make a sandwich of...
      PVC record - Cardboard Jacket - PVC sleeve.
      This behaves like a capacitor and electrostatic and the "gassing off" of the PVC sleeve (when warm) tries to migrate it's chemicals (through the cardboard jacket) in order to stick to the PVC record.... and eventually, it makes a mess of the cardboard jacket, and if left long enough... the record.

    • @tastyrecordsuk

      Unfortunately, VSS doesn't make single pocket resealable sleeves. (only dual) It's beyond me why not. I don't need two pockets for most my collection. Their sleeves are also inconsistent. I have about 4 different sizes from them. Drives my OCD crazy.
