As the owner of this car, I can't tell you what a relief it was to finally find Nick, one of the masters of the Mopar hemi! I suspected that the engine would have some problems when I decided to go for it and make the purchase of this car. These cars are so difficult to find (I looked for 5 years) that sometimes you have to expect that you will need to take the car over the 'finish line' yourself on certain aspects of it. The engine was one of these things. And that is exactly what Nick is doing for me. Working on this project with Nick is an experience of a lifetime! As Nick said, I gave him the green light to make this engine correct is every respect and restore it to its former glory. Thank you Nick! See you at the dyno test! :)

I worked at an engine machine shop for many years. An engine came in with spun bearings that had a fram filter on it. When it took the filter off the inside rattled so I cut it open. The element was just in there. No gasket no spring no bypass valve. Every one after that I cut open. Same thing in every fram filter. My buddy bought a rebuilt engine (an orange 350 chevy) so he bought a fram because "it matches the paint". It only had 20 pounds off oil pressure when we fired it up. So I went to my work and got a NAPA filter and put on it it gained 30 pounds just from changing the filter. Never have I used or recommended a fram since.

Been using them for 40 years and yet to have one fail or destroy a engine I've either built for HP or stock for my vehicles . A couple years ago I had a Wix go bad for my 5.3 LS because the anti drain back valve stuck open and caused the lifters to drain back and make lifter noise on a cold start in the morning to I bought another Wix and it was ok after but I cut that filter open and that's what I found inside . The problem is our politicians have sold America out to China and thought it was a good idea to have most of our products made over their and the quality has just hit rock bottom compared to when it was made here so even oil filters are not the quality they used to be amongst a ton of other things being most everything now isn't designed to last very long because we live in a throw away society .
@@michaelbaumgardner2530 I am convinced that Wix makes the Napa, and Purolator filters.
Edit: all of my vehicles get Wix filters, and I use Napa filters on my customers vehicles. I consider Fram the doorman of filters. If all the parts store has is that, you go to the next store. Even if you have to walk a mile in the pouring rain.

I used to use Fram filters until my Son began working for Napa/Aix filters, he knew I used Fram filters so he showed me a Wix, Napa and Fram filter that he had cut open, I will never use a Fram again as I saw the cheap cardboard like material they used as filter material.
And I was looking for something good to watch,

Fram hate in the States is real! I think it is because the cheap ones are .....well, cheap. Poorly constructed. And that's what most people buy. But just like every other filter manufacturer they have their entry level products and their premium level products. I have used Fram TG and XG filters exclusively for years. (And Quaker State synthetic motor oil) My '09 Chevy Colorado has 346k miles on it and the engine has never been opened. My 2011 Ford Fusion just rolled 238k miles today, and that engine has never been opened either. So in my opinion, it's more about keeping up with your maintenance than it is the filter. If you buy the cheap stuff, you probably don't keep up with your maintenance either.
WOW someone really Bastardized that motor, I would be Pissed off too . Thank goodness it's now in Nicks hands .Nick I'm 100 % behind you on that silicon thing I have fixed more oil leaks because of that crap than i can count .If you have ever done a start to finish showing of a full rebuild ? i would like to see it if not maybe some time you could do one I think it would be Fantastic to see how you go thru all the steps of doing one .Thank you .
Aw the Fram oil filter the word is said that the filter is just lightly glued together and come apart with oil high pressure, I've been using Fram for over yrs. with no problem.
On the Fram filter there are a lot of videos that compare various brands of filters by cutting them open andlóking at the internals.
The filter element itself, the anti drain back valves, spring, canister, base plate. These comparisons may surprise you.
I've watched some of those videos as well but I've been using Fram filters for 40 years and have yet to have one go bad or a engine failure because of using them but I had a couple years ago a Wix filter for my GM 5.3 LS for my truck that the anti drain back valve in it stuck open which was causing some lifter noise after it would sit over night then a cold start in the morning so I went and bought another Wix for it then cut the old filter open and found out what was wrong with it which I get sometimes you get a defect which on something like this could be catastrophic to the engine if it clogs shut or supplies the engine with unfiltered oil to the cam and main bearings but I got lucky and the lifter noise at cold start went away . I had a local ALCO that was going out of business about 10 years ago and they had brand new Fram oil filters for small block Chevrolet engines marked at 50 cents each so I bought everyone of them off the shelf to use for my 82 Chevrolet K10 that is my plow truck to plow my driveway out and so far no issues with the filters and this engine gets it's oil changed twice a year from 10w40 for the summer because I do drive it on occasion in the summer with the plow off it because it's actually in pretty nice condition for it's age then when fall comes I get it ready for winter and put 5w30 in it with a can of zinc added at each oil change because the 400 sbc I put in it from my old 78 k5 Blazer the cam went flat in the engine years ago and I had to tear down and new cam lifters push rods and rocker arms so after pulling the pan and making sure everything was cleaned and flushed good I keep using the zinc for each oil change so hopefully no flat cam in it ever again . K&N makes a really good oil filter you can buy that has fine mesh metal screens in them that you can take it apart to clean the filter screens out plus it has magnets on the side of it to help hold any metal shavings to the filter screens and they work very good but aren't cheap but for piece of mind especially on a fresh rebuilt engine or a race engine they are great because you can look to see if your getting any metal shavings from the engine just by pulling the filter apart instead of having to cut them open then clean it out and reuse it again . I'm thinking of buying one for my 5.3 LS and what irks me is how damn small the oil filters are on these engines being my truck takes just over 6 quarts of oil and you would have thought GM would have made the filter larger to filter the oil more on these tight tolerance engines and there's really no room for a larger filter length wise it would hang down past the pan and width wise not going to fit because the oil pan again is so close to the sides of the filter and the only way around this would be to install a oil filter by pass kit to mount either a bigger filter or dual oil filters under the hood some place to get more filtration and even then there isn't much room to do this so the cheapest and best bet for me on this newer truck is the K&N filter .
The fact that the canisters are so weak that they will actually split, and blow your oil that's supposed to be going to your vital engine components, inside the engine, all over the underhood of your car, causing a fire when the oil gets on a very, very hot turbo, and exhaust manifold. Yes. I actually seen that happen to someone with a very nice 1993 Talon, with a substantially built engine. This guy was running low 9s in a 4 cylinder car that had full interior back in 2006.
@@Spike-sk7ql Fram was the very first to design the race filter series that were used on the top fuel nitro hemi engines that had thick walled canisters because of the high oil pressure these engine have to have to keep the babbitt bearings from being destroyed under the immense shock put into the connecting rods to the crank bearings. Wix also has them now and I'm sure it's just a copy of what the Fram was way back in the day but if your ever building a engine that has to have high oil pressure you should never run a stock type oil filter on that engine and go with a race series filter so you don't have bulged cracked or split oil filter canisters because they are a thin wall canister . The reason why these nitro engines use babbitt bearings is because of the shock and load put on by the nitro and if they used a standard tri metal bearing like most engines use now days the shock and load put to those type of bearings would crush and destroy the bearings just on initial start up and run on fuel first then switched over to nitromethane. If you ever watch a nitro engine first start and warm up you can clearly hear the engine sounds different at first still radical sounding but once the tuner deems the engine is warmed up enough he will turn an adjustment screw on the blower hat that allows the nitromethane to then fuel the engine from that point on and the engine then sounds like a whole different beast . At the end of a run the driver has to shut the fuel off then the magneto because the plugs are used up and are cherry red so if the fuel isn't turned off first the extra fuel that's pumped into the engine will keep igniting acting like a diesel because of the high compression and the volatility of the nitromethane and the engine will keep running and detonate and destroy it's self . They say the the power of both magnetoes to light the nitromethane off under the kinds of compression those engines have that there is enough voltage that you could weld steel with them if they were hooked to a stick welder rod holder .
@@peteloomis8456 been to the NHRA nationals in Ohio every year, since back when they were using Columbus. I'm not talking about a full out race/nitro engine. Although, watching nitro cars go down the track is something I think everyone should experience even just once in their life! Watching those guys turn them around is awesome too. I still say that the NHRA is the best motorsport to go see live, as you definitely get the most for your money. Anyways, I'm talking about a substantially, yet moderately built 4G63T engine, making in the 600 hp range. I always used Wix after I seen a Fram filter basically explode all over the left lane of Norwalk raceway some years ago. Back when Buscher was putting on the DSM shootout, and was still into them.
After 31 years as a mechanic and garage owner, and living in CA, we had to crush the filters. Found a few without filter elements. Yup, they were Fram. Take one apart and compare with Wix. You’ll see the difference.

I had an acquaintance who was a liability lawyer for an oil and oil filter industry consortium. He said he had never had to settle a case on a Wix filter, but the vast majority of settlements were on Fram filters. (And he said he had NEVER seen a successful suit over an oil failure damaging an engine. Normally maintained oil doesn't fail.)

Whats so hard about engine detailing, is simply the reference per model year and the features. My 1967 Coronet 500 383 4bbl convertible was fully optioned and I'm still learning where stuff goes on it....its my 3rd Coronet 383 1967 and I've gotten so many pics over the years of survivor cars just to try and make sure all the brackets, hoses and fittings are correct. A dying art for sure. Nick is living library.

Studs may not be original or necessary, but they dont hurt anything either - 10,000 HP top fuel dragsters do very well with them. Maybe the crate engine manufacturer wanted the best possible reliability for the head gasket seal.

Well, some people enjoy watching an oil filter get cut in half. Such fans see things they like and things they don't like. Often Fram filters have few pleats and glued cardboard end caps.
I like Wix for this reason. I also like the OEM filters found on some cars, but not others.
27:06 That is also what I like about the Max Wedge and Crossram. The exhaust manifolds are so well shaped, there isn't really a need for headers. It would be interesting to see a dyno test of a B/RB with Max Wedge or Crossram manifolds VS headers.
Wix is now a subsidiary of Mann+Hummel; there have been rumors of Chinese-made Wix-branded filters showing up in the supply chain, but as far as I know they are unsubstantiated. Mann+Hummel doesn't operate like that, that I've seen.
The way the Stage 3 Ramcharger headers are designed, I wonder just how little HP loss there is with them. And, they not being actual headers, Nick would happily allow them in his shop. I wonder if anybody ever took the time to make up molds and cast some new examples of them..? And BTW, has everybody noticed the exhaust manifolds that came off the 413 from the Chrysler 300 in the shop.? They're better headers than most headers.
@@bobkonradi1027 The second thing I noticed about the recent 413 was how well the exhaust manifolds were designed. That would also be interesting to test against headers. I'm sure since numerous B/RB engines were sold with iron logs, there are plenty of header options out there.
I wouldn't be surprised if a company makes replicas of the original premium exhaust manifolds. I looked into rare Pontiac restoration, and some people do make those premium manifolds. It would surprise me of a Mopar guy did the same.

Yes a HEMI tear down. 👍 And I love those wheels on the convertible Roadrunner. The Mopar engineers wanted the reflection on the trim ring to reflect the rally wheels type spoke design and those aftermarket models captured the look exactly. It’s just a small detail but it matters. Don’t forget “Hemi’s Rock”.💪🏻😂

use of silicone sealer .I once rebuilt an Oldsmobile that had previously had work done to it and ti spun a bearing. When I cleaned the block, I found blue silicone blocking the oil flow to the mains. Thanks for the great videos! I always show them to my students.

While visiting Montreal this Christmas of 2022 I called Nick to ask if I could briefly visit his shop which was on my bucket list for years now being an avid mopar enthusiast. My cousin has been in the business as long as Nick discovered a loss of oil pressure in the engine's he worked on. We used Fram oil filters all the time.Not any more because they restrict oil flow.

Nick got a little excited about the use of silicon gasket cement 😂😂 was about to start talking Klingon but reeled it back in at the last moment. It’s amazing how much hokey work and shortcuts are taken when they built this engine. It’s like none of the valve train clearances were even looked at never mind actually checked and what’s with all the Home Depot bolts that were on the engine. There should not be a bolt on that engine that is under grade six preferably stick with grade eight bolts. It’s a Hemi for crying out loud, show some respect!
Never owned a Cuda but have had 4 Hemi chargers over the years along with a super stock and two long rams. 396 - 427 chevy, 428 - 429 - 460 Ford Always loved the hemi the most. I had a 55 Chevy running a 57 392 Hemi for a while. The car was built by a guy named Bill Evans who owned Evans garage in Penn, Pa. I never kept a car very long but I always had a soft spot for a hemi, But what do I know, today I drive a 2021 KIA Sorento X Line Prestige and after 2 years, it only has 5,600 miles cause I don't drive much anymore due to disability. LOLOLOL
You're a mentor the oily man would be proud of you NICK you're Patients well sometimes we gotta say what we gotta say another thing I would like to add is If you take a ball peen hammer and tap on the bolt holes to get the holes so they go outwards that helps a lot people over Torque them and bend the metal inwards GODSPEED
That engine still carries an aura almost 60 years later. Best looking engine ever made 🇺🇸😎

I am 52 now and i have been using all the FRAM filters they make for 30+ years and never had any problems out of them. I have also used other brands and they have never ever added any type of hp gain. I will keep using FRAM until I can't and not by choice, BTW, i have never bought a FRAM filter that rattles, besides everthing in this day and age is already way too expensive anyway!

He is good but we also have guys like in the states here Ray Barton Kieth Black who's been dead for a while but his son took the business over if I remember and you also have Hughes engines and Ed Pink that all either drag raced or built HP engine shops and R&D shops dedicated to the Hemi and other engines used for racing or just street as well . I'm sure Nick has probably bought parts from some of these places and has probably even talked to some of them as well being most of the car guys are a tight knitted community and are usually pretty good on giving advice on things if needed .
I see people use glues of all kinds excessively on seals and gaskets; I just smile and never say anything, just because I have been working on cars before their fathers were born.
If your going to own a Hemi ( original or crate motor) you want to have it period correct. The legendary Hemi deserves nothing less, remember that Hoover is looking down from the afterworld.

Between doing lots of oil changes at lube shops plus research every few years about what oils and oil filters were good, I found several websites where they tested and cut open a lot of the commonly used brands, and except for their top end filters the basic Fram filters used cheap internals that seemed to bypass easily. I went to using Purolator PureOne full synthetic filters with Valvoline oil and even at 4000 miles the oil still looked good on a 100K mile engine. I used the plan Fram filters with my 1973 Ford 351 and 1987 Taurus 3.0 pushrod engine and by 3000 miles the oil was dark.

Well said Nick About the gasket Glue Over the years I have seen a lot of that on the Chevy small blocks It seems like everybody does that And have indents all over the pan from Is overtightening them... It kind of makes a guy wonder what else did they do. Love the channel Nick:)
That distributor looks a lot like the Bosch HEI used from 1980 on Holden 253 & 308 V8's & the Australian built 302 & 251 Clevelands. The cover over the module has a distinctive shape.
I love learning all these details. I agree with Nick details matter. This engine is going to not only look awesome but will run awesome as well. Crate engines are expensive you'd think for the money they would want it to look correct.

I have always used FRAM oil filters myself. And I've never had a problem with them

Fram oil filters are known to be made of the cheapest materials. I can remember about 20 years ago, 2 separate Hayabusas were documented to have blown engines because the glue inside the filter got into the engine oil passages.
There are many people who have documented the issues with them. Even the el cheapo Supertech Walmart brand filters are superior.
When I was building engines there was no silicone sealer. ! We used to clean every thread hole, every bolt thread and every gasket surface BY HAND carefully . The only sealer back then was like a thick tar and we used it as you said, just on joints that were prone to leakage. I like Hylomar blue sealer, its great stuff.
In the 70s there was a rash of Fram oil filters being spit off with, of course, instant loss of oil pressure. Motorcycles, especially, suffered. I think Fram won the lawsuits, too.
I love taking down an engine, only second to hear it fire up after you put it back together!! LOL

Nick's not a Fram hater!!?? I'm not either. I've used them and never had a problem. If you do frequent oil changes the oil doesn't get dirty enough to worry about. I'd rather have OEM but not at 3x the price.

Nick I agree that people needlessly use that silicone on reassembled engines.I live in the Philippines and the mechanics here even silicone on the radiator hoses..then it gets into the coolant passages..it's crazy..
I started Young working on Mopars. Decades ago and I'm near your age Nick. I've seen a lot of factory oil pans that were leakers so I got used to using a little RTV red all the way around, like it or not! At least my pans never leaked. I always considered it a little extra peace of mind, but it is not the best thing when it comes to tear down lol. The hemi.. what can you say. It remains and always will, the very best of all of the top three engines that came out of America and I really don't care what anyone else thinks about that statement. It was designed to dominate and it did. In the hearts and minds of most people, it still does. Beautiful Cuda! Looking forward to the dyno on this one :-)

My dad had a 70 Ford F100 that started making strange noises so I opened up the 360 under the hood. It had two damaged and one bent pushrod, this on the factory engine with no mods and around 60,000 miles. I couldn't find anything else wrong and put it back together with all new pushrods. Myself and some friends felt it was due to my Mom over-revving the engine and the truck ran like new after the pushrods and a full tune up.
As far as Fram oil filters, they are cheap. Not a lot of filter media and a sorry anti-drainback valve. Cut open a WIX filter and compare it to a Fram, you will never use Fram again.
