I knew someone who broke a crankshaft in half on a late 70s coach ...that was fitted with the 500 series engine with a 4 speed gearbox....enough said ..
Every time the engine broke crankshaft ,mechanics had to remove the engine block and take it to machine shop to have them a line bore the block otherwise is will broke crankshaft again. 😅
You snap a crank shaft and do not eat the engine, lucky. The repair was as good as one could do on the side of the road, but I suspect that engine will not see 500 miles.

They do last a lot longer or no body would repair them, I have seen few last 100000 miles with excessive load.
