Wow.....I am cooking for a crowd of people and was looking for sandwich ideas and my brother suggested Roti John in searching for a recipe I came across your website and clicked on the video....I was so surprised to see the guys from Sorted food with you...I only started watching them about 5 years ago and have not watched all their older videos yet so I was very excited....planning to make this on Tuesday for around 20 people.
Whenever I'm away from home in another country, it's videos like these that comfort me so much. There's just something about watching your own local dishes being cooked~
You always remind me of the place where I was born and grew up. I am always delightful seeing your cooking videos, giving me more ideas how to cook my fave foods.. Yay!!!
Aw, thanks so much, that is so sweet of you :) big smiles, glad you enjoyed the video and hope you try it out!! Lovely to hear from you and hope you tune in next week too :) x
I love roti John!!! Aniway if u dot want it to be messy, you can actually mixed the whisked egg with the minced meat first in a bowl. Then spread it on top of the baguette before heating it up on a pan.
Hello.I"m Malaysian.I love roti John, but I prefer beef instead of chicken. We normally don't have roti John for b'fast. You can easily buy them at night markets, so we normally have it for dinner or snack.I think you have just came up with " The English Roti John " which is brilliant.
If you want a better (and authentic) Roti John, use soft buns like those hot dog buns or potato buns. Them buns will soak up those juices and then you flip them over to give them a nice crust on the outside. It's proper mint mates!
Back in colonial s'pore, the Englishmen used to play cricket on the greens of Padang. Incidentally, that was also the place where local men usually sold food-on-the-go like satay etc. There were some local men who sold French loaves with minced meat, eggs and onions fried on them. Back then, the Englishmen called every local men John. So, whenever they wanted to order that Roti, they called for John. "One Roti, John." That's how the name Roti John came about. :)
I am half Malaysian :) and an Ambassador for Malaysian food yay!! my fav food, and I have lot's of family still in Malaysia. Thanks for commenting and hope you like all my recipes x
OHH YEAH!! I love murtabak... and I'm very happy to be sharing my Malaysian recipes to the wrold, thanks for commenting and hope you enjoy my weekly cooking videos x
Name John came from John style bread which look like French bread but originally came from England. The English man eat it with scramble eggs but the style is change due to the Malay culture
Well we were all feeling like sore heads and it hit the spot :) But yes, you would normally grab one after a night out :)! Hope you enjoyed the video, and thanks for commenting x
+micheal yong singapura was longer than that man.. used to be temasek long ago... but not really sure when it became singapura, though from the story of sang nila utama... that was damned long ago... before the portugese came in 1511 and was a famous port in back in the days along with malacca. back to the roti john... is kinda like indian omelet bread, but of course the filling is different, make it absolutely different dish.
This is for UK, so suck it up for those screaming about using pork. Those people have been switching pork for other meats to make their version of authentic recipes for ages, so why can't anyone do the reverse? MAY THE PORK BE WITH YOU.
+smutpow Literally no one is screaming about them using pork. I'm a muslim from Malaysia and by all means you can enjoy the dish however you'd like according to your own personal preference. Originally they use chicken meat but I personally like to use beef :)
Who exactly is screaming?? Some of us are just pointing out the way it's traditionally and originally made by the Malays which is the use of Beef or Chicken. Nobody is stopping anybody from using Pork. U can even use dogmeat if it fits ur personal taste. Stop being a sensational UK Son of a Bitch!
+Pionottelly11 LOL....oh.....to be honest, they can use any kind of meat they want....just like how some Muslims replace pork with beef or mutton to enjoy a halal bak kut teh...it's that simple analogy to think of. Please stop making Muslims look dumb!
+Pionottelly11 who cares what meat they use to make it. It's a personal preference. I'm a muslim and personally I like making it with beef instead of chicken
Roti John first derived from Singapore and became popular in the 1970s. Singapore was the one colonised by the british in 1819. Why 'john'? It was a term used by the people at that time to address caucasians/eurasians. The neighbouring countries later then learnt the recipe to recreate the roti john.
roti john with pork...yikes!!...you'll never found that ever in malaysia..but then again the english might love it..change the recipe a bit to suit their taste.

Roti John is a Malay street food creation. We dont use Pork. We used Beef and Chicken.
correct me if im wrong, but i believe roti john was invented in singapore
Roti John was invented in Melaka (Malacca) in 1976... Which is in Malaysia...so the origin is in Malaysia :3
That indons manner, dont do this. Indon will claim this manner. Be aware
come from both ah
Which came first chicken or the egg? Pork pork pork...
I have so told them that!! :) I'm sure they wold love to go... X
Roti John for breakfast is kinda odd... Thought it's a supper thing..late at night at a roadside mamak stall :D

+smutpow nobody cares actually even if they using dog meat, or horse meat, or anything, we dont care because we know roti john can be anything on it.

Please stop making Muslims look dumb!

that
just doesn't work :D
They are actually called Roti John because Malay can't pronounce the word Baguette. :)
Roti John first derived from Singapore and became popular in the 1970s. Singapore was the one colonised by the british in 1819. Why 'john'? It was a term used by the people at that time to address caucasians/eurasians. The neighbouring countries later then learnt the recipe to recreate the roti john.
Hyun fair cop. At least no frickin' Indonesian is claiming the thing! 😁👍

Muhd Firdaus Singapore originated from Malaysia itself. 😂
