  • In this video, we review what I see as the pros of coir and commonly cited cons.
Pros are: organic medium, storage, shipping, it's a blank slate, it's inert, media bed preparation, perfect balance of water retention and porosity, pH balanced, no foreign materials like perlite, not a one trick pony (core has lots of other uses), sustainability.
Cons: salt content, adding nutrients, labor to rehydrate, scale of your operation.
Now that you know what they are, tune in for a nuanced conversation of each aspect listed above.

Glad you mentioned that chicken farmers can and will take it. Currently cycling my soil out to people with chickens. Good content as always.

Using Grow bags to rehydrate helps in reducing the rehydrating time. If you buy pallet from us, you get 100 gallons grow bag for free!.

Do you add Agrothrive nutrients when germinating or just plain water? Thanks!

Agrothrive is when bottom watering. Usually give it to them on the 2nd day under lights. First day is a brief top water with h20.

Do you add perlite to your coir?

There are a few crops that really struggle with corps water retention, and cilantro is the main one. I used to add 30% perlite to that one only. Now I do keep a bale of Berger Om6 (similiar to promix mp) on hand that inkix 50/50 for sunflower, cilantro, beets, and sorrel. But all of my main crops otherwise are 100% coir.

Since coir is an inert substance, why not grow using a mesh tray, and no substrate?

If you want to grow organic most certifiers require a soil like media to harbor beneficial bacteria. There is a part of the Organic regulation that touches on soil building, and coir is the least you can do to address that.
I also feed my spent trays to worms. I'll harvest castings to sell in the spring. The coir is a natural bedding material for worms.
There are growers who use just mesh screens effectively, I'm just not one of them. Nothing wrong with it, just depends on your goals and end vision.
