One of the most critical duties on a microgreens farm is cleaning and sanitizing your growing trays. Unfortunately, it is also the most labor intensive. Could you please confirm - do you actually separate the shelves at only 8 inches (with a T5 grow light)? That would be amazing as it would allow for additional shelves per rack. Orr do you separate the shelves by 9 inches (considering the tray is 1 inch tall, thus leaving 8 inches between the top of the soil and the lamp)?

Now I do keep a bale of Berger Om6 (similiar to promix mp) on hand that inkix 50/50 for sunflower, cilantro, beets, and sorrel. But all of my main crops otherwise are 100% coir.

      I know we chatted directly, but for other people's sake, it's 12 inch. Here is why. The spacing of the spray nozzles on the arm is about 11 inches apart. Bootstrap 1020 trays are about 10.75 inches wide. While a 11 inch cleaner would likely sufficient, I think the 12 inch maybe better when cleaning the bottom side of the trays due to the taper of the trays.

      I would not worry about the lumens rating. It makes sense that if the 2 ft light is half the chips of the 4 ft light, it would half the lumens. I would still use it as suggested here if using 1020 trays. If a t5s, 2x lighrs per at 8 to 9 inches. If t8s, use 1 per shelf at 13 to 14 inches.

    I’m trying to figure out lighting for my houseplants as I am in a north facing apartment. I want to hang them from the ceiling and do not want them to get too hot. The plants will be about 24 inches from the lights as I have to get chains to drop the lights down 12” from ceiling. I do not want a pink hue in my apartment so that probably throws out the T5s. Will the T8 bright white give my plants enough light at that 2 foot or more distance. What would you choose. For the T8 6500k I read that it seems to have a bluer hue compared to the 5000k yellower hue. I would be running these 12 hours per day

    Since coir is an inert substance, why not grow using a mesh tray, and no substrate?

    • @NBarSMicrogreens
      @NBarSMicrogreens 11 місяців тому

      If you want to grow organic most certifiers require a soil like media to harbor beneficial bacteria. There is a part of the Organic regulation that touches on soil building, and coir is the least you can do to address that. I also feed my spent trays to worms. I'll harvest castings to sell in the spring. The coir is a natural bedding material for worms. There are growers who use just mesh screens effectively, I'm just not one of them. Nothing wrong with it, just depends on your goals and end vision.

    Fibers in Terra sustain are there by design for the following reason: Coconut fiber adds air pockets to the growing medium. Those air pockets make sure oxygen can reach the plant’s roots and enhance drainage. Coconut fiber isn’t as absorbent as other coconut coir products, but it can still hold a decent amount of water. It gradually releases this water, so the plant’s roots stay hydrated without soaking and becoming prone to root rot and fungal diseases. It also contains a small amount of potassium and phosphorous, which both help plants grow. Fiber also expands better on Rehydration producing more grow medium.

    • @NBarSMicrogreens
      @NBarSMicrogreens 11 місяців тому

      Thanks for the explanation, but I tend to disagree. When I find long fibers, it is usually in blocks that don't rehydrate well. They are also a pain to deal with in Microgreen farming when a uniform media bed of approximately half an inch thick is desired. The long fibers create a spong like spot that does not compress uniformly.

    Thank you SO much for this info! It has been so difficult to find clear explanations of all this. I have a couple questions I hope you can help with though… You said two T5s per shelf were sufficient, but it looks like you’re using 3 per shelf behind you. Why is that? Also, how many inches do you recommend spacing your shelves apart for t5s? Like from top of one shelf to top of the next shelf?

    • @NBarSMicrogreens
      @NBarSMicrogreens Рік тому

      Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you found the info helpful. When I set up my racks, I set them up with 3 lights per, but have since moved to only 2 being on at a time. I had to double check after the video, and only two were on. The one rack appears to have all 3, but I think that is ambient lighting, making it appear like that. Regarding shelf distances, it is going to depend on your lights. The key is distance from top of the lower shelf to the light, not shelf above. The distance you are looking for is 8 inches from light to top of the shelf below. The T5 grow light recess fully up unto the shelf above, where as in this video, I am running 8' t5 shop lights that don't recess at all. So between shelves will likely be 8 to 10 inches depending on how you lights fit into the rack or not. Hope that helps!
