I’m starting to surf fishing andThe one I watch is actually you thanks for the explanation !! It just makes sense what you did ,we need beginners surf fishing tips , Mucho Gracias
Benjie, thx for this video. I just switch from bait to lure fishing and my first set of sp110 are way too light for Northcal surf. Now I will be able to modify them.
Useful info for any number of different lures. I didn't know about those suspend strips, I would always have to hammer flat small sinkers for that kind of mod. Those are good for ease of use and consistency. Thanks.
Yo Benji, nice mod. I did the same to some stick baits I picked up from tackle warehouse. They were the "Baker lures" brand. I wasn't as thorough as you guys were. They were floating and I was looking to make them suspend. I used them at Clemente and wrecked the bass with it. The one thing I did different was I painted the lead to match the bait and put a light coat of epoxy over it to keep the paint from chipping. Lure swims great. I'm going to try stacking the lead strips, thanks for sharing. I made it into Sav-on tackle yesterday... they were out of electric grunion. But ill keep looking. enjoy the content... keep it coming.
Hey thanks Rudy for the thoughtful comment bro. You’re on top of it man, epoxy is a def help not only on the weights but the actual lure itself. Haven’t gotten around to doing it myself but it’s on the list. Dang, seems like electric grunion is harder to find lately, bummer that sav on was out too. Heads up tho lc just released a special edition electric grunion GLOW! I’ll do my best to give u a heads up when I see it listed on amazon or eBay. If ur able, check ilovehardbait on eBay, that’s the seller you want to keep an eye on! Slay on!!
Hey Rudy, I just saw that crystalwaterstackle.com has the glow electric grunion and the glow electric grunion cherry. Those are both limited edition runs and I’ll be picking them up myself. Looks like he’s got the regular electric grunion as well. Just a heads up! 🤙
I picked up those lures, they arrived today. Quick question, when surf fishing. Do you fish the tides or is it more of an AM bite? Plan to try it 1 morning this weekend. Also I did the MOD you showed and painted and epoxy afterwards.. came out tits. can't wait to try it. Need to send you a pic.
Hi Benjie I Tried the Weighted Luck Craft this morning very clear water in Santa Barbara. I Hooked and Landed a 28inc Legal Halibut from the surf. I Love how this Lure Follows the bottom with the extra weight. Big Thanks
Cool video Benjie! Glad you released this tutorial and can’t wait to try it out. I haven’t been able to fish due to work, but going out soon. If I can find some of those strips I will try it out and share my experience on CSA! Tight lines bro ⚡️🤙🎣
Oh wow, thank you so much, I appreciate that! Yea, I was using my boom's hook remover for split rings and it was difficult. I recently got one dedicated for split rings and it is much more efficient. I'm still not great at it but I figure I'll get better with repetition. Thank you again!
Thanks so much for the sub Robert! The mod will def get bit, especially in deeper water columns, let me know any success stories, would love to hear them!
Thanks so much for the sub and the positive vibes brotha! Yes, this is in Long Beach. The mod is def a viable option, would love to hear any success stories! 🤙
This is so dope, can’t wait to try this mod. Do you recommend any certain color scheme for this particular mod? I have a glow sardine, metallic sardine, laser ghost sardine. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks again for the awesome content 🤙🤙🤙
Any color scheme will work brotha! But if I had to choose from those, I’d go with the metallic sardine. Would love to hear any success stories with this bro, good luck and tight lines!
Yup, I'm with ya! The main reason for this mod is because I love the tight action of the 110 compared to the 115. Personally I don't use this mod much nowadays as I'm already fishing shallow structure but I do have friends who exclusively fish this in deeper water and do really well. Def not a necessity, just a preference and added option for folks who like it. Thanks for the comment.
Man, it has been awhile since I've used the strips so my frame of reference is a little off, but if I remember correctly the strips should start a little past the start of the bill. If your strips are egregiously long and you need to cover like have the bill to get it laid down, then yes, it'll be find to cut it to allow it to fit. Hope that helps.
I haven’t tested it with both hooks replaced but I’m guessing it’s fine. As long as ur lc isn’t rolling and is maintaining its action, you’re good to go. The reason for the front hook being a size 4 is to help it swim nose down to help prevent snags and to allow the bill to drag thru and kick up sand if ur fishing the bottom. With both hooks replaced it’ll probably be more balanced, which isn’t a bad thing. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comment and the encouragement bro!
It's more for balancing the LC with the mod. The front hook is slightly heavier and the mod is very specific in weight to keep that thing wobbling optimally without rolling. Keep in mind, this isn't the only way to do it, but other variations would best be tested to make sure it isn't rolling on the retrieve. Another benefit to removing the center hook is avoiding damaging short halibut.
Hey Alan, I would think it’s possible but would def need to test it first for balance and action. I know someone that weights it to 25g so it’s not out of the question.
It could, just gotta test it. So many possibilities with these mods but gotta make sure it doesn’t roll or adversely affect the action. This particular mod has been tested and it’s balanced but by no means is it the only way.
I replaced the treble hooks for 2 in-line 4/0 VMCs. I'm wondering if the weighting would still be possible..would I need to add a dot of lead tape where the middle hook was?
I think you should be fine but the most accurate way to determine would be for you to weigh it and see if it measures out to 20 grams and then make sure that its still swimming correctly ie no barrel rolling or something funky like that.
I've personally not tried it but I know many that remove the middle hook. I don't believe it affects the action of the lure but its always best to check/test for yourself. Changing the front and back hooks to a heavier size 4 hook may help balance the weight lost from the middle, but that's just a thought without proper testing.
Hey Ryan, I have friends who stack the strips to get it to 1 oz (approximately 28 grams). I don’t know their exact formula but I do know they slay. The specific formula in this video has been tested but by no means is it the only way to do it. The key is testing and experimentation to make sure whatever combination of strips used doesn’t cause the lc to barrel roll (from side to side) or cause it to become imbalanced where the action is compromised. I’d encourage you to go for it and have fun finding what works best for you. 🤙
That’s dope man, I feel like it’s just another option to have on the water that can help figure out the bite on a particular day! Do u fish fresh or salt or both?
We all fish. But I’m always down to go. I need to put some time on my curado reel. I’ll be in Carlsbad this weekend and will probably bring some gear down there.
@@BenjieKimFishing Thanks for the reply...curious, why not VMC instead, they are lightweight and really hold up to the salt. Never thought or altering a LC in this way, going to give it a try for casting halibut in 20-40 ft of water, suspended rockfish too.

Thanks for the tips! Just modified my flashminnow. Do you think this would work with 3x size 4 hooks?? Has anyone tried it? I’m interested in using them for offshore fishing
Awesome, would love to hear how the mod works out for ya. I can't give you a concrete answer on how the 3x would work. Obviously it would be slightly heavier on the top 3rd of the lure which will in theory will influence a more pronounced nose down dip on the fall. My guess is that it will work just fine but maybe just check out the action and make sure it's not rolling or doing anything else funky. I'm curious how it'll do offshore, I'm finishing up a follow up video to this showing underwater action but one thing I'll be sharing in it is the fall rate is 6 inches per second. Appreciate your support Kevin, tight lines!
Benjie Kim Fishing thanks for the tips and advice benjie! I have fished them offshore with heavier hooks before but never weighted as you suggested in this video. Do you attach lead on the split ring in the front or take it off I see people do both.
The suspense strips I got were a tad bit longer than yours for some reason. It went past the start of the bill. Should I cut it?
Man, it has been awhile since I've used the strips so my frame of reference is a little off, but if I remember correctly the strips should start a little past the start of the bill. I haven’t tested it with both hooks replaced but I’m guessing it’s fine. As long as ur lc isn’t rolling and is maintaining its action, you’re good to go.

Why do you remove the center hook; would it tangle with the front hook if you don't?
It's more for balancing the LC with the mod. The front hook is slightly heavier and the mod is very specific in weight to keep that thing wobbling optimally without rolling.
Keep in mind, this isn't the only way to do it, but other variations would best be tested to make sure it isn't rolling on the retrieve.

nice i was wondering if youll be able to make it to a 30g or would the bait swim funny?
Hey Alan, I would think it’s possible but would def need to test it first for balance and action. I know someone that weights it to 25g so it’s not out of the question.
Hey benjie what do you think about putting a bullet weight to the line to weigh down the lure? Would that mess with the action?
It could, just gotta test it. So many possibilities with these mods but gotta make sure it doesn’t roll or adversely affect the action. This particular mod has been tested and it’s balanced but by no means is it the only way.
Your bullet weight will block the lip and disrupt the flow
Can a 110 Carissa be modified that way?
I replaced the treble hooks for 2 in-line 4/0 VMCs. I'm wondering if the weighting would still be possible..would I need to add a dot of lead tape where the middle hook was?
I think you should be fine but the most accurate way to determine would be for you to weigh it and see if it measures out to 20 grams and then make sure that its still swimming correctly ie no barrel rolling or something funky like that.
How much can you fish the upgraded hooks till you have to change them again?
Will removing the middle hook without any mod affects how it swim? I just thought 3 hooks are too much
I've personally not tried it but I know many that remove the middle hook. I don't believe it affects the action of the lure but its always best to check/test for yourself. Changing the front and back hooks to a heavier size 4 hook may help balance the weight lost from the middle, but that's just a thought without proper testing.
Upsizing the hook will create drag and also change the action of this lure or any lure. Adding the weight strips also change the action of the lure.
Would it be possibe to modify the LC to be 1oz? I dont wanna ruin my lure by just stacking the bottom with more weight
Hey Ryan, I have friends who stack the strips to get it to 1 oz (approximately 28 grams). I don’t know their exact formula but I do know they slay.
