I'm 68 years old. When I was 10 years old I saw a Gold Star parked and the owner came out of a shop and saw me gawking and sat me on his bike. That one moment led to over 55 years riding and racing motorcycles. Sadly due to being on blood thinner medication my riding days are done. Had this not be the case one of these would be in my garage as soon as they become available in the USA. Thanks for a great review.

Thanks Mark...really like your reviews. This bike's a winner. And the "scrambler" version I saw (on YT😀) was a bike that would open up even more of a market. Including me. The engine sounds wicked and a smooth thumper will attract all sorts of riders. It's beautiful too. Subjective of course...but hey...just look at it!!

@Super Cub London Cabbie SCLC Ithink he's just got lazy with the reviews, compare the two videos, Marks has way more information in a shorter time, well thought out, a good format. TMF,s latest tour videos are just 15 mins of on board from one camera pointing out views you can't actually see, he said in one video he couldn't be bothered with the faff of editing two or more camera footage, in that case I can't be bothered to watch.

Two things I remember about the BSA stand at the NEC last year were how well turned out these bikes looked - the colours and the style absolutely popped - and also, just how busy the stand was - totally rammed when we hustled through. Unfortunately, this type of bike wasn’t really on my radar at the time so I didn’t really study them in great detail but, as soon as I get a free Saturday, I’ll be nipping down to Dearden’s for a closer look - at this and their Guzzis 👍

As we finally had a nice, sunny and warm(ish) day I took out the demo model courtesy of Moore Speed Racing (Bournemouth/Poole). Sadly the roads were still wet so couldn't play too hard.
Initial impressions were it's "okay" but nothing special. There again I was filtering in traffic and being extra cautios as it wasn't my bike to crash.
What I would say, as someone who rides lots of bikes (Vintage and modern). The BSA is incredibly "natural" to ride. You just get on and go with absolute confidence. No nasty surprises.
Once I got out on the the dual carriageway I was very pleasantly surprised. 70mph no problem at all and gets there surprisingly quickly for a retro single. Somehow I was lucky enough to find a private road ;-) and she went up to 90mph with ease. Felt like she would have kept going but the bike was not run in and I was wearing an open face helmet !
Wind blast was pretty much what you might expect for the style of bike so you'd probably seldom ride the bike to it's maximim speed anyway.
After my little jaunt up the dual carriageway I took it out on the country lanes (around Lytchett Matravers for the locals). Those roads are narrow, twisty and full of pot holes. Wet leaves and little rivers from the melting snow cossing the carriageway. All of which made for less than ideal conditions. The BSA coped amazingly well, good breaks and loads of torque really helped.
I'd suggest these roads, along with sweeping A & B roads are really the bikes natural habitat. Though I could actually imagine riding on motorways (at a pinch) as she was fast and stable enough. Though why anyone would want a to ride on a motorway when there's so much more fun to be had an A & B roads is beyond me.
All in all. The more I rode the BSA, the more I wanted to ride it. If a retro bike is your thing then I'd 100% recommend giving the BSA a test ride. Indeed I was so impressed. I bought one.
Niggles: Well there has to be some. Nothing major but going down into first is just weird, not a problem in as much as it does it with ease, just feels odd (as I believe another reviewer mentioned)
I'm not entirely sure if it was the lever or the type of clutch (I'm guessing not slipper) so I found my muscles tightened up after a while. Adjustable levers (or just some slack) might help.
I'm about the same height as Mark and I would have preferred the bars to be a little higher and nearer but that would probably be easy enough to sort.
One more thing... There is a little baffle plate in the silencer that is easily removed if you want a bit more noise (It had presumably fallen out of my test bike) ;-) but the extra noise wasn't obtrusive.

    • @markpulling12
      @markpulling12  Рік тому

Many thanks Dave ...glad you enjoyed it ...you summed it up well ...shame that plate had fallen out of the exhaust lol 😂

Great review, thank you. Personally, I think the finish on the engine casings looks poor, like grey plastic, and the use of stickers for the logo's is unforgiveable. Also, the way the rear light/number plate are mounted low down off the end of the mudguard looks a bit lame, they need to be higher up! Clocks are nice tho...

As usual, Mark, a succinct review. I love a single cylinder engine. The thump, the torque. My relaxed style of riding makes torque much more important to me than horsepower. I have an RE 500 classic and love it for it's sound and it's power band but not for it's vibrations, especially above 50 MPH. . I bought an RE interceptor 650 for it's smoothness and freeway capability but I prefer the 500's styling and character. What to do? This looks tempting to me. That hideous radiator, though.

Good review, as always, thank you Mark.
Regarding the bike, it’s intriguing. Positives appear to be the engine (though you didn’t mark it down a point for imperfect fuelling) and torque it produces, smooth and relaxed ride and decent brakes. Build quality could also be a trump card. Negatives for me appear to be its slightly porky, sounded no better than Enfield’s new Hunter 350, lacks a centre stand and rear grab rail (not a deal breaker) and unsure about the stying with that oh so prominent exhaust pipe. It’s not cheap but not expensive, either - hence why I say it’s an intriguing bike. If I were interested I’d want to know other information such as the dealer network, accessories and whether or not those spokes are stainless.

Glad to see actual Brembo brakes instead of ByBre - ByBre brakes seem to be the main criticism of the RE bikes, i.e. not strong enough/wooden feel. I'm surprised no bike mfg offers more options in that regard, since car companies certainly do (i.e. nicer brakes in the Infiniti version of the Nissan 370x, etc.).

Every reviewer likes it - I like the looks and the style as well, but who is it marketed at? I am a returning rider, and purchased the RE650 INT as a first bike back after 33 years, and then an R1200RT for two up riding in my late 60's. So that is one target buyer, the other would be a male new rider that can cover some miles and can handle a heavier starter bike under 48HP A2 Compliant. Or is it also pitched at those with modern sports and classic bikes and can afford another modern retro-classic as well? :Perhaps yes. Well done to BSA new incarnation, they have done well!
