    Ruth thinking she had shot a whistler but it turning out to be Ira is such a good twist.
    The description we are given sounds like a monster but as you find out it's actually Ira it gains a new perception, a skeletal lanky body of a man who's gone through starvation, the grown hair because he can't groom himself and the sunken eyes of one who lost his mind.
    My favourite part of the story, I liked Bill's account and finding out more or less what the whistlers are doing, but that small part was just too good.
    Great story and great narration as always, well done.

  • @Shadowstar1311
    @Shadowstar1311 8 місяців тому +335

    I think the meaning of "it's a warning" is this. The Whistlers were all human at one point, and they had each lived through "the corruption". They don't cause the corruption, the corruption is caused by fear of the Whistlers. People who run into them believe they have to kill to survive. The Whistlers call out to warn the group that the corruption has taken hold. It's also possible that another dark creature causes the corruption, and the Whistlers hunt those creatures. Everyone in the story was killed by another person. Every. Single. One. That's why Ira ended up running away from the group, because he finally understood what he had done, and what still afflicted his brother. But by that point, he was already becoming a Whistler himself. I know this doesn't explain everything, and I probably got some things wrong. But I do believe the corruption is the fear that causes people to kill each other or let each other die. And i do believe the call of the whistlers is a warning that the corruption has taken effect.

      I don't really buy into the idea that people become the whistlers. Yes, there is probably some kinda corruption tied to fear, but I'm more on bills side at the end. Think they just use humans as bait to catch something else.
      Also, what do we figure, was the man that owned the books bill? And once he fulfilled his role in spreading the tale, bringing the whistlers to the attention of others, he offed himself?

      So it is realistic and serious. Most of us are going to do this after we pass away. I’ve seen the same thing happen to my grandma, my father when he died in the hospital, and patients I’ve seen in med school practice. Ig it’s easier to laugh about it because it makes death less scary, but this act in itself is serious

      For sure I don’t like being cheated on any more than you do, but I also think that this story realistically depicted imperfect people making that mistake. It’s not always simply because someone wants to screw someone else and is using the person at home waiting for them. It’s easy to ignore our own involvement in difficult realities. None of us are perfect, and I think that’s what made these characters in this story so interesting. They all were responding to their journey as it led to desperation.

      @@CreepyCat. I think that’s why it’s so bad. It wasn’t just a spur of the moment thing. The incident at the beginning maybe, but when you learn how deep it goes and how the brother had been pushing in for years and years it becomes really sad and dark.
      It’s a well written piece for sure, and the characters are all complex, which is why it’s interesting to analyze (and maybe complain about a little 😜)

    this was absolutely terrifying. I remember near the start thinking "oh hey those whistles sound like a person calling to a dog. That's creepy, how they are taunting their prey" and then when the dog actually turned out to be the thing they were hunting my brain put two and two together and I legit just froze for a minute. this is the kind of story I want more of, the more realistic version where you don't really know if the main character survives or not because the plot armor is just removed. The way it's being read as a person who got ahold of Ruth's journal instead of Ruth telling the story herself really helped with this. I also love how almost none of the backstory is explained immediately. It felt very naturally integrated into the story and not like I was being spoonfed exposition. I love it.

    This one was pretty cool. Not one of my all time favorites, but still gives you a ton of food for thought.
    And it definitely is very interesting that the whole thing is shrouded in mystery and a lack of explanation, since, in-universe, that's what draws people in. In the end, even when you've seen it with your own two eyes and somehow survive, like Bill did, there isn't even anything to explain, since it's so far beyond the supernatural. Like imagining a fourth dimension.
    Truly one of the stories that shines a light on how the paranormal would interact with our real world, which is so full of curiosity and knowledge-greed.

    I never knew there was a part 2. Really kinda kills the good feelings of the whistlers but it does answer the question of why they just whistled when people were around. Also pretty cool that they just draw things to humans till the proper time as to attack. Also Bill is shown to be truly a SOB great. But in all seriousness it's a classic and I can't say I'm not glad to finally know the whole story.
