  • Charlie Parr tells me what it means to own Spider John’s guitar, and what’s in store for the guitar going forward.
Charlie Parr has always spoken very freely about his influences, and one if his living mentors, Spider John, just gifted him his guitar. Charlie asked if I would help him document this, and it has turned into a 4-part series that goes deep into the story of this guitar, as well as what John calls his "so-called career" as a folksinger.

Dude I really appreciate that. “Feels like home” has gotta be some of the best feed back a musician who barely knows how to use a camera could get.
It was a real fun series to put together! Hopefully I’ll get to do more stuff like this in the future!

Only came across Charlie due to your videos, what a fantastic musician. He plays a song on UA-cam 817 Oakland Avenue with 2 capos, one is a partial capo. That would make a very interesting lesson.👍 Thank you once again .

Wow! Well glad I could help share his music with you!
Yes, the double capo, that would be an incredible video topic. I’ll see what he’s up to next time he gets a break from tour! Thanks for the idea, and thanks for watching!

I love the idea of passing an instrument down to someone else to keep playing as opposed to hermetically sealing in a display case to never be played again.

I think one major inspiration Spider took in odd~ball guitars had to be known associate Big Joe Williams with his rats~nest amplification and nine string guitar.

I own an identical Gretsch, 1956. Do you know if John also modified the interior braces? Those guitars were all ladder braced! Wondering how the 12 string conversion affected the bracing?

You know I’ve actually never gone under the hood on this one so I’m not sure. If I ever do though I’ll make a point to share about it!
