  • Tested the Swamp Runner 8" hurricane prop. Tested for idle speed, max mph, max RPM's, ease of handling, and holeshot.
    The Hurricane Propeller is made by Swamp Runner. Its a performance style prop. It has a higher pitch when compared to a standard prop. The one that is tested in this video is an 8" hurricane prop.
    My engine was not running normal this day. It was not reaching the normal RPM's or speed. My baseline is always done with an 8.75" weedless prop from Swamp Runner. I normally govern out at 3860 and 19mph with the weedless prop. This day I was only reaching 3600 rpms and getting 17 mph. So I had more weight in the boat or my weight distribution was different.
    With my experience in the video, this 8" hurricane prop gave me the speed that I would normally get with an 8.5" standard prop. It handled like any other good prop would, great holeshot, and great speed. With being able to turn (because I have enough RPM's left) I will be testing out the 8.5" hurricane prop in another video.
    BOAT SETUP:
    1436 lt Alumacraft Jon Boat (would not recommend - get a tracker or something else other than an Alumacraft) {135lbs}
    13hp Predator Engine by Harbor Freight (serial/model number 60349 [hemi-version]) {76lbs}
    Medium Swamp Runner Longtail Mud Motor Kit {57lbs}
    Custom front deck and floor {~75lbs}
    Battery, trolling motor, fishing supplies, cooler, anchor, etc... = {~140lbs}
    My weight = 150lbs
    Total weight = 633 pounds

    Great video. I've been waiting to see something about these props before purchasing one or two myself. I think your performance issues maybe be due to the added weight and drag from that stache brother😂. Looking forward to the results of the 8.5.

      Haha never thought about the weight of the stach... good catch 😂 yeah I really enjoyed this prop. Just make sure that you are reaching the RPM's you need to before getting one to make sure your motor has the uhmp to spin it

    Heard anything about the Duramax 18hp 440?? I'm looking at making a mud motor for my 14ft aluminum boat. For around the same price it seems the Duromax would be better than the predator

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 роки тому +1

      I don't like buying new where a product has not been out for a while. If it is a different block than the 13hp predator, that would mean the parts are different and if you need to fix it, its going to be hard to get parts. the 13hp predator is a 420cc engine. I do not see the duramax 440cc engine to have 5 more horsepower with 20cc's more. I think it would be more trouble than its worth. The predators 420cc 13hp is tested and used by many many people, parts are widely available, and finding help online about an issue you have with it will get handled and figured out a lot quicker

    Is that a app you are using to monitor your speed and rpm on the bottom corners of the video?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 роки тому +1

      This is a GPS feature of the GoPro camera. I do not see this when I'm out filming. I use an app on my phone to monitor my speed in real time

    How many rpms are you getting at full throttle with the 420 predator

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  2 роки тому

      3900 RPMs is what this engine governs out at without touching it. This is how it came out of the box. It is stock.

    I couldn't run the 8in hurricane wasn't enough. I have the same setup as you but a little more weight. 8.5 hurricane was good but to much with my kids in the boat. I got 20mph out of it with just me in the boat but I rarely get out in my boat by myself so back to the weedless 8.75 which tops out at 15 mph with my kids in the boat

    • @JTgatoring

      Solid information! Thank you for sharing that. I still think I'm going to use the weedless prop for my normal days too but if I do a long run I will probably switch to a hurricane prop.

    Just Paying attention to the details of your vid and the water--at the time of --8:50-- on the smooth water you are outrunning your boats wake and having to go deeper and more spray-- My observations anyway--So I can design mine a little different length. but against 4 mph current or with the current will be drastically different in the wake--Engineering to find a great middle is very difficult--but can be done !

    • @JTgatoring

    A trick I found is if they get stuck use a blow torch heat it up and it should come off.

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 роки тому

      If the prop isn't removed for multiple seasons then that is when some heat really helps, but this prop puller has really worked well

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 роки тому

      I do not know. I did some research a while back and it seemed like it did, so I went to the store near me, they had the hemi on the shelf so I got it

    • @TheLostBoyScout
      @TheLostBoyScout 4 роки тому +2

      The Hemi versions of the Predator engines produce a little more torque, run cooler and are a better platform for modifications.

    The idea is to tap hard on the bolt pushing against the shaft not the prop check put a axle puller getting on the prop gets them out of balance or bent.

    I would do a standard tune up. Spark plug, fuel filter, air filter and clean the carburetor. That will go a long way and it's a cheap start.
