I appreciate your candor and mature approach to the situation. I think it is telling that your love of the setting outweighs your negative feelings for another force. That's an entirely positive thing.
I'm with you, but Wizards don't want us, so I'll oblige them and my money will go elsewhere.
THIS. Same.
Have zero doubt, Gygax was just a stand in punching bag for all the older players that have been with the hobby for years. They really meant you and me in that piece; it's implied in the subtext. My group walked away from WotC with dignity. They own a trademark, not the hobby. I'm glad WotC dislikes us because I've seen what they cheer for.
Thank you for your work with Greyhawk. I make the argument that if you're having fun with your friends around the table, you're doing it right. I haven't liked an edition since 1st but played several. Keeping the old worlds alive is very important as the current IP holders are intent on wiping us out.
I feel you on the Drivethru paradox. I want to replace my older books but I can't afford most of the prices. I do what I must. When it came to the anniversary book, I waited for a used copy to show up on Amazon, and I finally found one. The history alone is worth it
Hey Joe- I don’t find your position hypocritical at all. You keep doing your thing. I appreciate your efforts to keep Greyhawk alive, especially in the vein of AD&D 1E. Thank you!
Agree on all points.
Sorcerers rule, Wizards drool! 🤪 I kid, I kid…
I've got physical copies of _The Living Greyhawk Gazetteer,_ _The Scarlet Brotherhood,_ _Tales from the Yawning Portal,_ and _Ghosts of Saltmarsh_ (the last in English _and _ German!). Similarly, I've plenty of digital copies of all sorts of books, magazines, adventures, &c. I'm set for life on the _Greyhawk_ front; I enjoy 5e - for the most part - but I've no desire to "upgrade" (though I still prefer 3e and would love to play a 1e/2e campaign some day).
Thank you for doing what you do to keep Greyhawk alive! I appreciate you!
Love Greyhawk; Hate WotC. Simple solution: Play Pathfinder. My groups play Pathfinder in Paizo's awesome campaign setting AND in Greyhawk. (And Ravenloft. And Planescape. And even G I Joe, and Star Trek, and etc.)
Dungeon Crawl Classics preserves the soul of AD&D. Even in the way the books are not always reprinted. I remember my hunt tracking down the earliest printings of AD&D books that I could find; DCC feels that way.
Joeseph would probably argue to play his Adventures Dark & Deep RPG. 😊
Paizo is filled with people that think the same thing as Wizards and is no better.
As long as Wizbro continues to be arse, it just makes things so hard and frustrating. Fans deserve so much better. But, at least we have you and all you've been doing for Greyhawk. And that's still great.
Thank you, sir, for all that you do to keep Greyhawk alive. Regarding WotC, I agree with you entirely...and with Elon.
I asked you a while back if you were going to critic that book. I'm glad I waited for your opinion.....saved me $100! Thank you!!! And you are no hypocrite. I mean we all have to decide what we will do and what we wont do. I was like "NO...I refuse to buy that Beholder, and that Displacer Beast....oh and definitely not buying that Gelatinous cube action figure! Oh really they made a Owlbear action figure?" And then I bought it all. I'm the hypocrite! *Plays with my Owlbear*
At the risk of saying I told you so, I warned you about this when they announced that they were doing Greyhawk. I said it's never good when a multinational corporation turns its greedy eye to your favorite piece of art and starts to "mine" (wotc’s words not mine). Edit - all that said it’s not your fault and I’ll keep supporting you.
Agree with you on Wizards and Greyhawk, I think you're doing the right thing.
Same here! I will buy used or find other ways to get DND materials! Love DMsGuild as well!
Hating on the existing customer base has been the marketing strategy of many entertainment industries for years now! Whether tabletop games, video games, movies, tv shows, it's the same script and has been for a long, long time now. It's bizarre that anybody ever convinced these companies it was the right way to go, but somehow they did. *boggle*
Totally with you! Ill never give wotc or hasbro a dollar. We play ad&d 1e and Pathfinder 1e .
Elon Musk buying Wizards would be a disaster of epic proportions.
Explain
Release the original d&d box sets as print on demand revealing the interest is still there?
It's okay Wizards hates you too
You are doing the St. Cuthbert & Zagig's. Let no dark Wizard of insipid strand sway you!
And what is a few measly 20%, for some of us of Sea Princes sail those shores for many a'booty of olden time!
Yar har!
Love how hes like .
People are calling me a hypocrite.
I think their wrong.
Proceeds to explain why calmly and like a gentleman.
Is respectful even to those who he disagrees with, see folk thats how ya do it.
A man of culture
The thing about IPs is, you kind of have to be an evil money-sucking corporation to have enough cash to buy one once the creator sells/is forced out/dies. And dealing with your beloved properties being owned by people unworthy of doing so, and yet continuing on with your fandom is quickly becoming an essential skill in this world.
@greyhawkgrognard, Do you have a timeline for when you can get your books done in print on demand? 😊 ❤️?
Been playing Dungeons and Dragons since 1987/88, so I managed to get my hands on products that that where 1st edition AD&D at my then new found hobby store, but I have played crossover from 1st/2nd edition and every edition bar 4th (although there are some good products there and I have even borrowed stuff from it).
I am quite neutral about being a "gatekeeper", as long the product is good in my eyes, I buy it, whomever sells it, I don't mind.
A good discussion with respect to everyone participating, I think that this drives the hobby forwards in a good way.
Everything put aside I love both the Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms settings, they have their own flair and I really like that.
Keep up the good work.
WotC is actually more interested in "activism" (i.e. crapping all over the original fans just for the spite of it) than canon.
maybe an errata sheet/video of WOTC DEI vs Gygax OG changes
How dare you take a nuanced and reasoned stance on a complex subject!
Is part of publishing Greyhawk material, via DM's Guild, including every single race, class, subclass, etc., listed in the Player's Handbook, and/or D&D Beyond? Most of them seem completely incompatible with the Greyhawk campaign setting.
I agree, no more money to WotC from me.
It's a constant conundrum these days. Love D&D but hate WOTC. Love Warhammer but despise Games Workshop. Love(d) Star Wars and Marvel, hate Disney. On and on it goes, and I don't really have a satisfactory answer. It pains me, and I don't know how it will all end.
It's funny seeing D&D's fandom getting so close to the idea that important works of culture should belong collectively to the people practicing it rather than some random company board who decided it might make them so more money. I also have to say that as someone with decidedly leftist political leanings it's hard for me to process how insincere Wizard's version of "political correctness" is. "IPs" such as this one that make up such a significant portion of the mythology and culture of so many people should not be able to be owned by a company, period.
Competely understand, you need to get your stuff out to the new crowd.
No shame in that
Another excellent video. I agree 💯 percent with everything you said.
You’re working for fans of Greyhawk, NOT HasWiz.
I bought the book and read it cover to cover. I think they presented Gary and Dave as people. They did something great and they made mistakes. Some of the things they did back then won’t fly now and WOTC is fine to say so. I personally don’t worry about it. It’s true, some things wouldn’t fly now but that doesn’t take anything away from what they did then. If that makes you feel like they are putting them down that’s on you.
I think what a lot of people here want is to freeze time and not have things change. I understand the feeling but recognize it’s a fool’s errand.
All of that said, I still enjoy your channel and it is your channel so soapbox away. I’m just a random on the internet.
Did Wizards of the Coast actually write and publish Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons ? I thought it was a licensed product written by another company. However, WotC still gave the thumbs up to the book, and if it strongly disagreed with what was written about the co-founders, or at least felt it could be toned down, they could have withdrawn the license.
Publish, yes. Write, no. Jon Peterson is credited for curation and commentary on all the historical documents included in the book. He's an independent writer-historian, not a WotC employee. That said, he still needed their permission for all that scanned material to appear alongside his commentary.
The text with the remarks about Gygax, et al was written by Jason Tondro, lead designer at WotC.
@@GreyhawkGrognard Thank you for that clarification.
@@GreyhawkGrognard Yes, that's right. I forgot he did the forward.
God bless Elon Musk and God keep Gary Gygax, whose jockstrap no-one at WOTC is fit to carry. Gary was a genius. The current DEI-focused regime at WOTC cannot create, only destroy, like all evil.
"Help us Elon Musk, you're our only hope"
Gary said what he said, including the racist and misogynist stuff that he repeated and doubled-down on. Facts don’t care about your feelings.
Gary was a man of his time. People can try and judge what he said 50+ years ago based against the woke immorality of today all they want. If you're offended by what was common a generation before you were even born, that's your problem. Gary is dead, it isn't like he cares what people these days think.
LOL. 🤡
Enjoy the rainbow brigade my friend. We will enjoy Greyhawk as it was meant to be.
That history of D&D book is right now trending in top 20 bestselling games books on Amazon here in Canada, that is the market effect of Elon Musk’s tweets!
