The schminnow is one of the most popular flies in all of fly fishing. With saltwater fly fishing on the rise, this is a pattern you'll definitely want to have in your arsenal. Developed by Norm Zeigler in Sanibel, Fl , it is designed to mimic small bait fish that most predators feed on. It is a lure that can be used almost anywhere on any fish.
Veteran Fly Angler Cliff Nigh shows us how to get this fly tied correctly and in a short amount of time. It would be a good idea to tie several of these flies and add them to your fly box. This fly is also called the crystal schminnow. Let us know if you catch any on a fly from this tutorial. Send email to headfirstfishing@gmail.com

I'm a beginer and finding tying can be a bit intimidating. Thank you for the solid tutorial for a simple proven effective pattern.

Learned that the forward two back one created a great tapered body thanx

Great video and Love the tie! A little small flashabou in the tail really gives it that something extra.

The schminnow fly is effective here in New England. Thanks for explaining to make 2 forward wraps and one back wrap of the chenille to build bulk. I prefer to not clip the marabou to make a straight cut. I prefer the natural taper.

I use hot pink thread to make a hot spot head. And to add just a bit of color.

@@HeadFirstFishing I use it with both bead chain eyes and lead with I fish a bit deeper water. One of my go to flies for speckeled trout here in North Carolina.

Nice fly . What size hook I did mine with a 2/0 . Not as good as yours but I have only been doing this for about 2 month .

Never put the eyes on them before I normally just make a wooly bugger with silver wire.

You never mentioned what size hook. Most tutorials start with that.

Thanks for your comment. We'll try to remember that for future videos. The setting was live during the fly tying group class, so most people already knew what hook to use.

Size 2 saltwater hook. Looks like a 2x long and 3x heavy.
