I’m glad you removed the paper right away. You wouldn’t want to leave them using that much glue. I recently have tried using freezer paper and sewing beside the fold it works fantastic and is reusable so you need far less paper. I get about ten or so uses out of each piece. There’s no bits of paper to content with either. I simply draw out my pattern on the top side follow all the same steps other than glueing because the freezer paper holds it down. After the last piece just pull off the paper and start again. Your needles don’t dull going through the paper either. It’s truly a game changer. Happy quilting.💕
The glue is washable and I never have any problem removing it. It looks like a lot (because it's purple) but it's really just a very thin streak. I actually have a video on using Freezer Paper for foundation piecing. I don't have as much success with it when there are small pieces such as this block, but it's a great technique and I have used it for many projects. Thanks for watching and for your comments.
Thank you so much for “giving away” your pattern. I live in the UK and make a lot of quilts for a neo-natal unit nearby. They are usually around 18” x 22” in size and as you can imagine all my blocks are made in miniature. Using your template as guide I have made a 3 1/2” template and can’t wait to try it out. Thank you for sharing.
How exciting! I would LOVE to see it. Could you email a picture to info@joyfulandmerryquilting when you finish it? Thanks so much for commenting and thanks for sharing!
I had no idea what foundation piecing is but thanks to you, I totally get it. I am 74 years young. Now get this. I have scraps from my high school dresses and my graduation dress plus all the scraps from most all the clothes I made for my 4 kids and fabric from doll clothes I made and sold years ago. I just could never pitch those scrapes. Every time I look at them, I remember what I made and for who the piece was made. I even have some scraps from the men's shirts I made. I have checked the strength of the fabric, which is remarkably good, and all the scraps are clean because of how they were stored. This pattern is wonderful. I can make a quilt with a lot of the scraps and then finally part with what I don't use because my memories will be in that quilt. Need to downsize a bit. This is the best pattern I have found for this. I will have to check my Accuquilt dies. I may have what I need to get a lot of the pieces cut. Thank you so much for this pattern. I have been sewing 65 years this summer and quilts are the one thing I never messed with till now. Mom started me sewing young, 9 to be exact. Times were different then and we didn't have a ton of money. It was a good thing she insisted I learn. So again, thank you.
You are so very welcome! Sounds like a wonderful idea and I'm sure you will have a beautiful quilt of memories in the end. I would love to see a picture when you are finished! Thank you for watching and especially for sharing!
Thank you Mary, FPP has always been a mystery to me but since watching your great tutorials I fully understand the process. Inam grateful for your sharing your knowledge, so enjoy watching you work and love your explanations. Many thanks Mary😘

You're so welcome! It's such a fun pattern - and if you haven't downloaded the Free "scrapbusting system" pdf and you'd like to give it a try go to www.joyfulandmerryquilting.com/scraps. Thanks so much for watching!
Great tutorial! I am not a quilter, but you have inspired me to try foundation paper piecing. This process is so orderly and the blocks come out beautiful. I have so many scraps to use up. Thank you!
That is a lovely block for a small project but I can’t imagine making a large quilt with that pattern. 14 pieces for a 6 inch block is a lot of work for me. It would make a lovely small baby quilt.
I found it to go together quickly using Foundation Paper Piecing - one block took less than 10 minutes once I got going! Thanks for watching - it really is a fun block.
Hi Mary, my question is about the foundation pattern. I printed it and when I measured the test square it was 1/4" short of 1" all around. Is this correct ? I can't enlarge on my printer. You mentioned in video you have templates, how can I get them?
If the test square was not 1 inch, then your block size will be off. Check your printer settings to make sure it's set to print at ACTUAL SIZE or 100% and not "Size to Fit". That is usually the problem. If you can't adjust the size on your printer, then the next option would be to go to a copy shop and ask them to print the foundation patterns for you. They measure 6 1/2" x 6 1/2". If yours are a different size, no, that is not correct.
Thank you! It looks like you are using all reproduction fabrics in this. Have you made one of these using everything and the kitchen sink scraps? I would love to see one that has scraps from all kinds of fabrics.
These are not reproduction fabrics - they are all from another project using Lori Holt and Riley Blake. I haven't tried this in any other fabrics - I'd love to see yours if you give it a try. Thanks for watching!
Hi Mary. I have downloaded the Scrappy Block pattern and on it is printed 6.5” block but mine measures just over six (the pattern). Is that correct or do I need to enlarge the block pattern? Thanks, i m looking forward to starting it.
The block should measure 6.5" x 6.5". If it doesn't you will need to adjust the print size on your printer. My guess is that your settings say "size to fit" rather than 100%. Hopefully, if you change the setting to 100% you will get the correct size. You can always make it with the smaller size - your pieces will be a bit larger than they need to be, but the block will still look the same and is pieced in the same way. Hope that helps!
There is a great video that describes it. I love the Olfa Perforating blade and use it every time I foundation piece. Here's the video if you'd like to take a look: ua-cam.com/video/HQiFkf-2Bt0/v-deo.html Here's the link for the perforating cutter if you're interested: amzn.to/49cUmCm
I'm just using cheap copy paper. With all of the bias edges I like the way the pieces lay much better when I glue each piece. I tried it both ways - glueing the first piece only and glueing all pieces, and the second option produced a much more accurate and square block, for me. Thanks for watching!
If you use the paper designed for paper piecing, starch your fabric well, and use a short stitch length you don’t have issues removing the paper, don’t need to pre-perforate the paper, nor use all that glue. That allows you to leave the paper on the block until you are ready to assemble blocks.
The pdf pattern was presented for free at our Joyful and Merry Quilting Night Owl Quilting Hangout. It's available for 2 weeks for free and then it goes into our store. Here's the link: www.joyfulandmerryquilting.com/store Thank you for watching!
There are many advantages to FPP, in my opinion. The paper serves as a guide keeping the fabric stabilized even when there are bias edges. It keeps the fabric aligned when adding additional pieces, limiting the stretch that can happen from those bias edges while allowing you to sew small pieces together accurately. Points are perfect and and seams are straight because you're sewing on the lines. In addition, it allows you to piece blocks accurately, that may be more challenging, something that is much more difficult when using traditional template-piecing methods. Hope that answers your question.
Not sure what you mean. You place your fabrics on the unmarked side and stitch on the marked side of the paper, folding on the lines as you go along. It's very easy to see - easiest method I know. Can you be more specific?
I guess I was thinking of how you could start it in the middle and lay the pieces on the top side and sew them down. Since I asked this, I looked up paper piecing tutorials and yours does seem the simplest. If I find a tutorial of what I was thinking I’ll show you but I bet it wasn’t paper piecing. Thank you.

@debbieouterbridge4621 sorry to confuse you Mary, but the foundation pattern on page 3 had the middle blocks as 3.0 x 2.5, the written instructions were correct, my fault really
I just printed it out and found the same mistakes on the FPP pattern of page 3, Pieces A2-A5 all say 3.0"x2.5", and all the FPP lines measure smaller than the written sizes but this is moot since you trim off the excess fabric in the seam allowance.. My test squares all measured 1" and the FPP block measured 6.5". The traditional piecing templates are also measure smaller, between 1/8"-3/8", than the written sizes. I have not made any of the blocks yet so cannot give any verification.
