Here is a link to the video featuring the old quilt that inspired this block: ua-cam.com/video/7zaPXdCKBBI/v-deo.html .
The block is a variation of Edna's Choice (#101) according the book 5500 Quilt Block Designs by Maggie Malone.

I'm so glad to see that you pin so much. I thought there was something wrong with me, since I can't seem to sew without pinning. Thank you. 🙂🙃🙂

A kindred spirit! I love it! I would much rather pin than use the seam ripper. 😀 Goad I am not the only one, too. ❤️

You guys don’t need to pin and actually it doesn’t help the fabric lay flat. I use glue or that wonder tape. Super simple don’t need to spend time taking pins out as you’re sewing it’s so fast
I found a similar type of wonder tape at Joann fabric and it works just as well. And I got a lot more for a dollar the wonder tape brand is a little bit more pricey

@@dcwatashiThat stuff is spendy and has issues of its own!
I love my love my yellow-head pins, 500 pack! You should see the ladies at the shop flip.over my nice crisp intersections on my *heavy-fabric, with everything from cordouroy to sateen finishes, damask, upholstery, etc, 1199+ separate squares* --- that stuff goes walking no matter how you hold it!
Yes, perhaps basic cotton holds itself in place almost perfectly, but most other fabrics have other ideas.
Longer pins enable you to pin without buckling the fabric, and also assist in stress-free "taking up" of excess length, since you sit and split the difference with pins until you like the distribution, then as you sew you can relax just trust that you placed the pins well, and enjoy your beautiful seam!

Thank you for not being "ashamed" to be pinning your pieces, but also teaching how to pin. I have been having trouble with smaller piecing and learned from Just get it Done quilts to think of each piece as having a beginning, a middle and an end. If i do that AND use pins it comes out so much better. And unlike almost every quilt tutorial on UA-cam you promote pinning, like its a necessity, not like its a newbie thing to grow out of. and do not let anyone see you doing it if you do.

    • @SewtheDistance

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment-it is so sweet and truly made my heart happy! I love that you've found a technique that works for you, combining what you've learned from Just Get It Done Quilts, too! It's such a great mindset to think of each piece as having a beginning, middle, and end-what a fantastic way to look at it!
In my opinion, pinning is such an invaluable tool, no matter your experience level, and I'm so glad you feel encouraged by my approach. It’s definitely not something to be "ashamed" of; it’s a skill that can make all the difference in the final result. I’m thrilled to hear that using pins has helped your smaller piecing come together so beautifully. Keep up the amazing work, and thank you for taking the time to share this with me-it means so much! ❤️

Thankyou thankyou Kris for this video. Your object might have been to show us how to do the scrappy quilt block and yes, I really enjoyed this but what I valued most was the lesson on how to square up your block. I was given a whole bunch of blocks made by different people and asked to sew them together. My mind went blank because all the squares were, well, not uniform in their square and I didn't know where to start. Especially too because I had cut and made some blocks to go with it too. Mine all matched, other blocks matched each other but nothing was uniform. Now I can fix it all up. Finally, I know what I am doing!!!!!!! Thank you.

I have a pattern for a dolls quilt and I am thinking that making a whole bunch of these to then cut down with the size of the quilt might be a great idea. Yes, my BIG quilt is still waiting for me 😂 am I procrastinating on that project maybe???
    Thanks Kris.

Excellent for my guild’s charity quilts! I took very scribbled notes and a few photos so I can remember what you did. I am slightly OCD🥴💜 so I would probably try to make the seams work out for an 8-1/2” block. I am doing this very pattern, with each square representing each quilt I have made! Can't wait to get back in my sewing room to start assemble. Have no idea how many squares I have!

I cut my own 5 inch squares and assembled them in sets as you demonstrated for the first method. I set them with a deep royal blue in a different way. Was really happy with results and gifted it to our nephew who just graduated from college. He was thrilled! Thanks so much Kris; all of your blocks are lovely. I will definitely be making this quilt as I adore scrappy quilts!

Could you do with 5 inch squares on the outside of center block using in larger inside square, I know it would be double the size, to make less cutting and sewing.

I did this block style for a denim quilt, with the center being the denim. It is a great way to use up scraps and get the beauty of denim without so much weight.
