This mic is amazing. Would it be any good recording a trumpet in a room with backing track? I've been looking for a mic that will capture the tones, shape and dynamics of a trumpet without distorting when it gets a bit loud but can still capture quieter parts. You reckon this mic will be good for that?
That would largely depend on the sound of the room. Because this is a bi-directional stereo mic, you will hear the recording space as part of the sound. This recording was made in a state-of-the-art studio with beautifully controlled sound quality. Using a ribbon mic on a horn is quite common but you are not going to get the isolation you would get with a cardioid dynamic or condenser mic.
@@onemic-theminimalist thanks for the response! I've tried a royer ribbon mic but it deadens or flattens out my tones and dynamics. Capturing the sound of the room I think is what I'm after. I tried a condenser mic but it would peak too easily and I can't control the gain while I'm playing the instrument. I don't need studio quality recordings but I want it to sound decent.
Incredible recording and performance ! I guess the only drawback with this technique is the tight SRA (and the fact that it only works with great musicians well positioned in a great room). Do you ever add some additional reverb in post ?
The SRA can be as wide as you wish. It's a matter of placement. However, in an over ambient space, you will have less control. I do add reverb via an aux send that has an M/S plug-in that brings up the middle where the vocals normally are.
@@MASS_Studios yeah the r88 is blumlein. when he refers to the center of the mic he means in the center of the two ribbons. this mic has a line to indicate center
Finding this a million years later but...holy smokes!
Never too late, lots of OneMic videos to watch and more to come. Glad you dig it.
Some people can't get a mix to sound THIS good with a lockerful of mics.
Sometimes things just come together and magic happens, thank you!
Great performance, great sound! Bravo, I love it.
Alexander
Thanks a lot!
4 years on and I still come back to this exact recording. Very happy I can listen to this on Apple Music in lossless high resolution now :)
This band truly shines on this type of recording setting. The dynamic of range accentuates the range of emotions.
I agree
I can't even find the words to express how good this sounds...an incredible recording and performance is a huge understatement.
JonGodsun thank you.
Oh Lordy ! This is excellent !

@@geoffreylomas944 the Royer has 120 DB of dynamic range so that's not an issue. Sounds like you need an experienced engineer in a nice studio.
@@onemic-theminimalist I'm not that level yet, just home recordings :)

Sounds amazing! One question: How do you pan AEA in the mix?
Hard L&R
But vocal is dead center...and backing vox is left.
During her leads, she moves to the center of the mic. When they sing together she moves a bit to the side.
AEA is in Blumlein and she is between two capsules if Im not wrong?

Hey 🙂
Maybe i missed it, but what mic are you using? Thanks!
AEA R88 - it's mentioned and the end of the video.
Very cool, lost me with the " Jazz" in the solo but otherwise excellent. Cool vibe.
Wow. Fantastic.
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic!
