I saw a post about your stolen bike on your Instagram. Sad to hear. I once had my bike stolen too. It was an expensive one and I was sad about it. I scoured the online store for used bikes and I came across one that looked just like mine. I still had the documents from when I purchased the bike and more importantly I had the serial number. So met up with the seller and saw that the serial number was the same. I told the seller that I would buy it within a week. The next day I called the police told them the story and with their help I got my bike back. Some say I'm too attached to that bike and I think so too.

Mine was stolen and I found it but they had destroyed the serial number so even though I called the Police they said I cannot prove that it is mine cause there serial number is not readable. Even though it had clear markings that I had described to Police when I first reported it stolen. Police is a waist of time.

It's the principle of the matter. Good on you for taking the initiative to recover your stuff! I had my bike stolen a few years ago and I actually saw it multiple times afterwards cos it's a small city and apparently the thief went to the same university as I did... But the bike had been a recent gift to me, so I had no way to prove that the bike had ever been mine. I kept trying to find a good opportunity to steal my bike back, but one never came.

When your kid starts talking you'll start learning Finnish so much faster! I have a 3-year-old who talks a lot and it has helped me immensely in learning Finnish. I would recommend that you buy or borrow Suomen Mestari 1 and 2 and use the exercises in those books along with the audio material online. We've used those in the 3 courses I've attended here in HKI over the past 2 years and It's helped me a lot to understand the whole post-position -ssä -stä and so on.

Now that you have the -ssa/-ssä v. -sta/-stä distinction, you can easily learn the -lla/-llä v. -lta/-lta distinction for "on" v. "from on. It is as if English has dropped the endings in "wherein", "wherefrom" and "whereto". In fact Swedish retains the distinction "var/varifrån/vart". If you think about the English sentence this way then I think both Finnish and Swedish would become easier. You must choose one, there is no generic "where" in Finnish. "Wherein is the toilet?", "Wherefrom come you?", "Whereto should we go?"

    • @anttihaapala4579
      @anttihaapala4579 4 роки тому +2

Though there is the complication that in Swedish you ask "Wherein did you buy this?" but in Finnish it is "Wherefrom did you buy this?", and there is quite a list of verbs like that where the action happens "in" in Swedish but "from" in Finnish.

  • @meikusje

Are you paying attention to grammar and conjugation at all in your Finnish learning? It really helps with better understanding conjugations. My Finnish isn't what it used to be, because I don't really get much practice in, but I found that it all seems very overwhelming until you learn to understand the grammar, which (for the basics) doesn't need to take very long. I know you have the book From Start to Fin(n)ish, and I would definitely recommend reading through the chapters and doing some exercises, instead of only using the apps. There's something about using a physical textbook that makes it easier to really take in the information, I think.

  • @dvveh

Spot on with your revelations. Not a Finnish teacher, but I suppose all question words beginning with "mi-" have a case ending attached to it, some of the actual meaning being less straight forward as with these ones expressing location. Just add the question "mihin" to your list of questions, and you have the basic words for expressing location and movement: something being (in) somewhere (missä) and moving *to* or *from* somewhere (mistä, mihin). (-hin is also a case ending, but less obvious here as -ssA and -stA due to more incoherent inflection, basically "Helsinkiin - to Helsinki" is Helsinki+hin at its deep structure)
These cases express so called inner location, close to English preposition or structures like in/from within etc. There are also three outer location cases (-llA, -ltA, -lle) to express things like "at" "to/from (the vicinity of sth)". There are good illustrations of this in the link shared by the user britishtf2.
Also while on the subject of location and questions, for practical reasons as cities are quite usual places of staying and movement, even though some Finnish cities or towns are inflected using the outer location cases (for example "in/from/to Helsinki" = Helsingissä/Helsingistä/Helsinkiin but "in/from/to Tampere" = Tampereella/-lta/-lle), the question word in these contexts still remains missä/mistä/mihin, not millä/miltä/mille.

I dont know if ppl have said this often to you, but about the confidence to speak finnish to someone is something that almost every finn that have ever traveled to anyother country can relate, very least i can. When ever I travel on a holiday to other countries (i dont do often) at first its so hard to gather your confidence to speak english to someone when its not absolutly nessesery, and i think imo i speak english moderately good. Gets easier after you just force yourself to do it over and over again, even when you end up feeling like a idiot and just want to melt away from the scene.
Srry for the long comment and cheers you doing great, keep up the good work even at times like these.

If you draw a cabinet and then type in the cabinet -ssa. On one (left) side of the cabinet, make an arrow to the left and type -sta. On the other (right) side of the cabinet, make an arrow pointing to the left and type -in. When you have that image ready you will see easier how to use -ssa, -lla, -sta and -in / -n. At the top of the cabinet you type -lla. Then an arrow on each side that goes to the left. The arrow that goes from -lla, where you type -lta and the arrow that goes to -lla you type -lle.
I hope a Finnish person can fix this if I made a mistake. :D

Sorry about the bike, Dave. It's always a bummer - and a particularly heinous crime in my books. I'm not sure if it's junkies or Baltic gangs that are behind Helsinki's depressing bike theft stats Anyway, hope your home insurance covers the loss.
I've had two of mine stolen in the last three years. Now I have a foldable e-bike that is small and (just about) light enough so that I can carry it up three floors to my flat. That's how it's gonna be until someone finally invents a bike lock that can withstand an angle grinder. I have actually had this idea for a lock that releases sarin or anthrax if someone tries to tamper with it. Harsh? Maybe, but you shouldn't mess with a fella's vehicle.

On the pre- and post-[what-ever-they-are-in-English] I recently found a video of Finnish grammar( ua-cam.com/video/K8OvpTGF4dM/v-deo.html ) and even as a native speaker I found it interesting. So if you dare to take another dip into the sea of Finnish grammar, that in my opinion is a good video to check out.

Sorry to hear about your bike :( it has become a bit of a problem in recent years the eastern european bike stealing gangs that have landed in finland too.. they drive around with their vans around the city looking for bikes and get a quick getaway out of the country.. I'm sure it's not as bad as in most other countries but yeah gotta keep your eyes open i guess, especially with an electric one.

Kinda like your office more. More relatable/cozy/personal? Dunno but that's my best guess.

You are an honest person. You feed your child, take care of him from birth. It is very cool. Forget this Finnish. Then everything will work out by itself.

Ehdottomasti enemmän videoita suomeksi. Mitä enemmän puhut (vaikka väkisin), sitä sujuvammin alkaa suomen kieli sujua. Kokemuksen perusteella on jokaisen vieraan kielen puhuminen aluksi hankalaa. Mutta jos olet pakotettu tai pakotat itse itsesi puhumaan, huomaat, että pian suomen kieli alkaa ikäänkuin vahingossa "soljua" suusta ulos.

Dave ... straight ... stop bullshitting yourself. Finnish is damn hard. Go easier on yourself. Lower your language goals and get the small wins before moving on to harder stuff. Otherwise you are setting yourself up for failure and beating yourself up and all that goes with that. Small steps will win this race
