It's only fine if 1. They signed off or 2. It's only a one time thing. Case I point, Harold Ramis's send off in Afterlife or Paul Walker's in Fast 7. It's meant to finish a story, and as long as it ain't used again after that, I'm fine.
I think it's okay if done to bring back a character in a prequel or a flashback scene. Should be done sparringly though - essentially what they did in Rogue One (although the technology was not yet perfected back then). What should not be done (but no one wants it anyways) is inventing completely new characters "played" by dead actors.
I thought this was hands down the best de-aging I have seen yet. He really looked like his young self. The opening act was phenomenal... like seeing Indy in his prime again.
My jaw dropped. I hadn't seen this Ford in a LONG time. He was 45 years old again - he was the Harrison Ford of The Last Crusade who rode off into the sunset, except now, a few years later, a WW2 spy. As Indy would have been. Great opening to a great film.
My understanding was that it wasn't just deepfake. They used a lot of stock footage they had of Harrison Ford. So i think it was a combination. There were some shots looked like remastered footage, until he spoke. There were a couple of times that it looked a bit unnatural, but overall, i was impressed with the blended technology.
Here's some clarification. GOOD deepfakes need hours of the highest quality footage to train off of to get a face looking realistic, as it absolutely had to for this film. Instead of just training the model off of Indiana Jones 1 2 and 3, they also used any existing footage of Harrison Ford form the same time frame, including deleted scenes, outtakes, alternative takes, bloopers, other projects such as starwars, and stock photographs of him from that time. they fed ALL of this information into the Deep Learning algorithm so that it would have solid reference for almost any lighting, any expression, and any angle of his face. This is how the stock footage was used.
I'm all for it and I think the technology would've worked better for resurrecting Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher in Rogue One, if the CGI artists used this approach, mining actual footage of the actors, instead of trying to recreate their likenesses from scratch.
I don't know what's with the others complaining about de aging faces of characters in shows. I don't mind at all. I don't even mind seeing a younger versions of the movie stars even it's fake.
I see deep fakes as a tool that, when used appropriately, can do a lot of good for a movie. Just like all the other tools in the box, mostly CGI, which can be used to enhance a movie - or completely destroy it if over used. I think it worked well in Indy 5.
The de-aging effect looks okay & believable on the most part. But as someone who grew up with Harrison Ford movies, I noticed that his voice got deeper as he aged. And they didn't do anything to his voice. So it's kinda funny to see the old man voice coming out from the young Ford., it's like watching a lipsync.
I disagree. The low point of Indi 5 for me is the first action scene, when he face looks weird most of the time. I like the approach of him being old and tired, I think they find the right tone for this movie. I have no problem with a strong “female character” or convenient plots, because old Indi movies had that too and they are great anyway.
Exactly. And as long as people praise these movies, these movies is what we will get. But seeing how badly it is bombing at the box office, maybe there's hope.
I think Hollywood should looking into deals licensing the face of characters for future use without them. It could be lucrative for actors, as it could generate income each time their likeness is used in the future (without them even having to work) and could even be written into contracts as willable to their children.
Honestly, I have a bigger problem with NOT de-aging actors' characters, because the older look is incongruent with the time of the story being told. Let's also consider that CGI "still" has a long way to go. The lions in the upcoming "Kraven The Hunter", clearly look like CGI fakes, and this film is being made with a massive budget. So, I applaud any de-aging of humans that looks better than the false-looking CGI animals that we often see.
CGI quality has been declining because some pieces are rushed into production. Have you ever seen the CGI from Pirates of The Caribbean? Now compare their CGI to recent installments from 2023 like The Flash or some Marvel movie. The difference is so noticeable, with the recent CGI looking like it came from the 90s instead of actually looking advance. There are some notable exceptions like the Godzilla vs. King Kong but for me, a movie that came from the 2007s looks superior over than the current 2023 movies. Any movies that came from 2005 - 2011 are bound to have superior looking CGI.
The de-aging algorithm was so good that not until old Indy showed up, I realized that "Yeah right, Harry is 80 years old already, that young one was him or a double with CGI". And I'm glad it was all him acting the whole scene.
I loved the new Indy film. It was the first time i've been out to see a film in the cinema and i had such a great eveing. The movie really paid homage to the originals and brought some exciting new stuff to the table.
I have no problem with using imaging tools to perform flashbacks and earlier storylines. Now maybe they can fill in the huge year gap between Indiana Jones films up until the Crystal Skulls.
The Indian Jones Movies have been some of the best movies of all time. Some better than others but Harris Ford IS Indian Jones. Using this technology to make the final movie is absolutely acceptable. It is using images of the same man. Even at 80 Harrison Ford is a handsome man. Even at 80 to do this movie is incredible. I am in full support of just another tool that has been used in movies for years to create images. I cant think of a better way to end a the Indian Jones legacy!
I always wondered why de aging or deepfakes in Marvels are so good when in Lucasfilms they are average. That will be very nice they edit those "average" scenes in the future.
They could deepfake his face but not his voice? That was a huge mistake. Deep faking voice is extremely cheap. The number one complaint I heard was his old voice did not match his young face. But I also heard the face swap as sloppy. What this points to is the problem when you upscale a computer image that was modded on a computer monitor, to a huge movie screen. On the movie screen you see absolutely every flaw. This is why the old movies are so special. Where all the colors and exposures were perfect. All of the images were perfectly managed because that was all done in excruciating detail real time on site when the movie was shot. That level of perfection is what was actually captured on film. Not manipulated into the film after it was shot. I have heard several people say it would have made so much more sense to find a young actor to play a young Indiana Jones. Some new talent that could have given the franchise another forty years of life. Not a gender swap social warrior. A real adventurer with a moral compass and pathos and appreciation for the people around him. I would like to see one more Indiana Jones movie with Steven Spielberg directing it and Kathleen Kennedy nowhere around the entire country it was shot in. And the young actor could hold his own and maybe old Indy could do a cameo. It would actually make a funny scene where the young actor looked in a mirror under the influence of some South American tribal mushroom drink and saw the real Harrison Ford looking back at him. And Old Harrison Ford scolding him for being so lazy and letting the bad guys get the best of him (up until then). I think this movie could have saved 100 million dollars and made THREE billion dollars by just giving other actors a chance to shine and especially by writing a script that actually loved the Indiana Jones legacy and characters. This was a terribly missed opportunity to do it right one last time. More CGI is never the answer to poor filmmaking.
Absolutely not. Harrison Ford IS AND WILL ONLY BE Indian Jones! You can make earlier movies with a younger actor but ending the legacy of these films should ONLY BE PLAYED BY THE MAN THAT MADE THEM WHAT THERE ARE!!
As far as i know Harrison Ford takes 25 million upfront and then gets a % of the film's grosses which made him a total of 65 million for Indy 4.I don't really believe that Disney decided to spend 100 million just to make Ford young again.
I don't know if they actually used deepfakes as good as youtubers like shamook. Seems like they used a similar process but not deep face lab. Lucasfilm's process is not even close to looking as real at least for certain shots.
I dont get why fans seemed upset that they used deepfakes, for one, they only rlly used it for the beginning of the movie, two, i think it was incredible how they did it, i loved the movie very much, it was very enjoyable

I loved it, he was my first crush in Temple of Doom, so I'm very happy to see him again in a new movie. And this opens a door for my dream of "Fate of Atlantis, the movie" come true.
How could it be disrespectful to Harrison Fords legacy? People don't think he knows that they're de-aging him in a movie he stars in? What's disrespectful is that they keep making these bloody movies for all the wrong reasons and ruining yet another franchise in the process. Who asked for another Indiana Jones after the 3rd except Harrison Ford? I liked him better when he used to have integrity and turned down projects. But at some point in his career he said "screw it" and made more Indy films, Star Wars and was even in Expendables 3... His legacy was tarnished long before they deep faked his face.
I personally think the use of deepfake technology is really cool. It could be used to revive/create spin-offs to some movie series that were never fully concluded and make it easier to produce scenes that would be limited due to aging or unexpected challenges. However, I can also see the moral dilemma of using this technology. Way of it were used for malicious purposes? What if it replaced actors who were truly dedicated to the craft? What if it’s relied on to heavily and gets rid of the nuanced creativity of practical affects? A very cool technology indeed but one that should be used sparingly to ensure we’re getting the best use of it without creating moral dilemmas in the future.
I finally saw it and it looked good when he did not speak, but whenever he did, it looked like a video game cut scene and whenever he was in low light, it didn’t look right and seemed sharper and not quite integrated with anything else in the frame - see the bike chase close up of him going towards the train as an example. Definitely the technology has come a log way, but still not quite there yet.
How is the deep-fake technology in 'Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny' expensive in a movie, when Tik Tokers can do it for free? My guess is most of the $300 million budget went to CGi sets, environments & reshoots.
Yeah, no...his voice did not sound at all like they de-aged it. It sounds like an 80 year old man with a 40-something's face and body. In fact, I highly doubt they did _anything_ for it. Mark Hammil in Season 2 of the Mandalorin is an example of how to correctly de-age someone's voice: you have the actor say the line, then use AI to dub over their voice using samples taken from audio recordings of them during younger stages of their career.
I think they have to recognize ageing process is natural and we all go there unless we get hit by a truck and drop dead. Let aging to be an acceptable reallity even in Hollywooder
How did the Tom Cruise TikTok videos fool anyone?! For one, Tom doesn't look like that anymore despite what some people say. I have to say that the work done to de-age Ford looked pretty convincing. For once, the movie studios did a good job.
300 million dollars. 😕Hmmm. 🤔 I wonder what good COULD have been done for 3,000,000 people if they'd simply given them all $100 or $1000 or whatever. And simply re-screened "Last Crusade". Now *that* was an emotionally powerful film. What a shame.
this is amazing! black mirror season 6 espiode 1 - this is exactly it! aging actors will give their permission to use their younger faces in movies/tv shows but i wonder, in order to shoot this do you need someone whos face resemble the original actor, or can this be done by anyone?
De-aging indy's face is pretty useless, when he still moves and talks with the body and voice of an 80 year old. Besides, I don't think the technology is quite there yet, and in a few years these attempts will stick out like a sore thumb. Kind of like Gollum in LOTR
The same people/accountants that told us that the pentagon was spending $10,000 on a hammer or a toilet seat, are the same ones hiding money for these movie studios today...
I just saw the movie. Since I knew nothing about the movie beforehand (other than it's Indiana Jones) I had no idea how they made a younger Indy. I just assumed that I'm watching some younger actor that looks A LOT like Harrison Ford. Well, turns out it *was* Harrison Ford wearing a CGI mask over his face. Looked great and I see nothing wrong in it.
Question - if it's so damned expensive to do, how come sole individuals can do it so well on a shoestring. I'm sure ILM added bells and whistles, but still... Also I respect there's more screentime rather than a 30 second clip, but...
My rating of all IJ films 1) Last crusade - 9/10 2) Temple of doom - 8/10 3) Raiders of the lost ark - 7.5/10 4) Crystal skull - 7.5/10 5) Dial of destiny - 6.5/10
The reason the Tom Cruise deepfakes look better is because the actor’s body matches Cruise’s age so it doesn’t look as jarring or eerie. It looks awkward on Harrison Ford, De Niro, Pacino et al because their bodies are those of 80yrold men - and you simply don’t move the same way you did in your youth at that age. There’s a shot in the new Indiana Jones at the beginning where he goes to put on his jacket on the train while talking to Toby Jones and it is very obvious that we’re watching an old man’s movements with a young man’s face. And it’s jarring and noticeable.
IF Harrison Ford is happy, then I'm happy'. ID like to see Sean Connery 007 back to life with CGI for another movie? it would be a compliment to Sean Connery's movie career. Making a cameo appearance in a Bond movie, .. as 007 as he looked in 1965
@@themobseat ''Often imitated, never duplicated'', they may be able to knock it off, but it won't hold the value of the original. James Bond is one of cinema’s most iconic characters, appearing in 27 films across seven decades and being constantly re-imagined by new actors and fresh creative ideas. For all the innovation the epic action saga has seen though, there is yet to be a 007 quite like Sean Connery’s original. Appearing in seven Bond films across a tenure spanning 21 years, Connery utilized his smooth manner and effortless charisma to make Bond a surprisingly endearing action hero. His performances established spy-thrillers as must-see cinematic blockbusters, set the gold-standard for what James Bond should be and was the essential ingredient to making many of his Bond films quintessential films.
I have no problem de-aging Harrison Ford for "Dial of Destiny" . My problem is referring this technique as "Deep Fake" of course i understand this technology can be and is abused. However, i think the scene where the 1945 Indiana Jones passes under a bridge and transform to a seventy-something old guy sleeping in front of a television being blasted by the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" from his neighbor is probably one of the most poignant moments of Dr. Jones living in a claustrophobic apartment deeply depressed that he lost his son in Vietnam and his wife is leaving him. This is probably the lowest point of his life. Of course, like the Beatles' song he embarks on on a adventure that rejuvenates his soul . The use of the so called "deep fake" digital technology was a way to tell a Brilliant story of a hero in the twilight of his life to gather the strength for one more heroic action to save the world from time traveling Nazi's. He hates Nazi's and so do i.
Fantastic video! De-ageing actors makes sense to me, but "bringing back" dead actors feels kind of wrong. What do you think?
I think I’d be more okay with it if they signed some sort of contract before they died permitting studios to use their likeness in the future

Yep!
This was phenomenal and I 100% support it. Having "young" indy in the movie was amazing for the story.

Here's some clarification. GOOD deepfakes need hours of the highest quality footage to train off of to get a face looking realistic, as it absolutely had to for this film.
What a shame.
this is amazing! black mirror season 6 espiode 1 - this is exactly it!
aging actors will give their permission to use their younger faces in movies/tv shows
but i wonder, in order to shoot this do you need someone whos face resemble the original actor, or can this be done by anyone?
Beyond the fact this technology being stupid, the premise of the latest IJ movie was absurd
I saw the movie today. Great job with the de-aging AI technology. Technically it was very impressive.
The majority of younger H Ford was archive footage, outtakes etc. Minimal computer work.
Also deepfake wasn't used for Tarkin in Rogue One.
No man you are wrong, they didn't use archive footage, everything on flashback scenes was made from zero using CGI stuff.
I think it looks brilliant and opens up endless possibilities
They did an excellent job. Very hard to criticise.
Only faults were the motion where some scenes were not human such as the train top scene.
some one is getting really reach because of that technology , thats for sure
De-aging indy's face is pretty useless, when he still moves and talks with the body and voice of an 80 year old. Besides, I don't think the technology is quite there yet, and in a few years these attempts will stick out like a sore thumb. Kind of like Gollum in LOTR
The illusion is gone once he started to move and talk. LOL!
Okay, they got the digital de-aging figured out, now they just need to do it in real life. Biologists, that's your next big challenge. Let's do this.
The same people/accountants that told us that the pentagon was spending $10,000 on a hammer or a toilet seat, are the same ones hiding money for these movie studios today...
The entire movie should have been a deep-fake with a de-aged Harrison Ford tbh.
I can´t get enough of Harrison Ford, I love this actor.
Use Anthony Ingruber as younger Harrison Ford. Ingruber made a Han Solo video.
His voice didn't sound younger at all. It sounded old and hoarse which made it so jarring when it was the younger Indy.
Question - if it's so damned expensive to do, how come sole individuals can do it so well on a shoestring. I'm sure ILM added bells and whistles, but still... Also I respect there's more screentime rather than a 30 second clip, but...
I thought that the de-aging worked really well for this movie.
4:35 Judging from this plane crash, it is a low budget production.
I like Deep fake. It's fascinating!
Was Rogue One de-aging? I thought it was traditional CGI face replacement?
I think the end result looked like a younger unfit indiana jones that had put on a bit of weight.
It's "ree-PREESE," not re-"prize."
Some parts were pretty bad actually, during the bomb scene he looked like Willem Dafoe
This is an incredible mark of irrespect.
De-aged Harrison Ford looks far better than de-aged Robert De Niro.
No more millionaire actors - it is a mogul producer’s dream, they will become Micky Mouse
I like it. They should keep on using it in other movies.
Cushing wasn’t a deepfake. He was completely cgi. Leia’s face was a deepfake.
No, she was a 3D model too.
Leia looked pretty good in Rogue One. Now Tarkin looks like CGI
I saw the movie yesterday, I was 21 when Raiders of the Lost Ark came out, now I am 63, De-Age me please !
Oh my
I just saw the latest Indiana Jones movie today, and I loved it! It was so creative and entertaining
Truly? Other than the first 12-24 minutes, you truly felt it was an excellent experience?
🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨
@@Novastar.SaberCombat I loved this film too, imo it was great
It was good. Much better than Crystal Skull.
actors have very complex facial expressions to convey their emotions which deep fake does not understand
And you wonder why actors are worried about AI..
Its so creative and i love it that their talent is not wasted
It‘s insane to me how this tech became better over the last year. Harrison’s deepfake would look even better/take less time with todays deepfake tech
My rating of all IJ films
1) Last crusade - 9/10
2) Temple of doom - 8/10
3) Raiders of the lost ark - 7.5/10
4) Crystal skull - 7.5/10
5) Dial of destiny - 6.5/10
The biggest chunk of the budget went to Ford, that's why he was happy to do it.
65 millions!😮 now I see why he came back to do that crappy movie!😂
I wish I had access to this technology.
Rather than pay $65M for Harrison Ford, just use a stand-in and deep fake his face to look like Harrison Ford.
It served ñlitte purpose as the ,movie bombed, earning 97m domestically in its first week when it needs to reach US$700m to break even.
This is one of the reason for the strike
IF Harrison Ford is happy, then I'm happy'. ID like to see Sean Connery 007 back to life with CGI for another movie? it would be a compliment to Sean Connery's movie career. Making a cameo appearance in a Bond movie, .. as 007 as he looked in 1965
Nope, Connery was replaced, Moore was replaced, Brosnan was replaced and so on. Just find another actor to play Bond.
It looked good but sometimes it felt like the effect was getting off his face like those snapchat filters
Maybe de-aging looked better in movies where the screen is far, but on QHD screen, it not always looked realistic.
Hiring a "younger version of an actor" would require genetic engineering and cloning. I don't think we are quite there yet. 😂
