I cringe whenever someone refers to me as African American because I wasn’t born there. I mean no disrespect to anyone that’s a native of Africa because my ancestry is from there but I was born in Ohio. Whites aren’t called White American so I’d prefer to just be called black. 🙂

Karen Conteh Because the dominant society, ie white people don’t have a prefix when describing their racial group. I just feel like if we’re gonna be called African American then they should be called White American. 🤷🏽‍♂️

@@cawj7896 we shouldn't waste time on what we are called......but rather how we are treated/mistreated.

I get what you mean but African American/Black American is it's own ethnic group and has many culturally traits and history that differs from white Americans. Many "American instruments" like the gourd banjo was created by Africans in the United States same with the diddley bow and washtub bass. Without contact with Africa America would never have peanuts, rice, black eyed peas and other grain/herbs. I get that we have been here for centuries but just like Mexican-Americans some who are like 7th generation we have a story that we can't forget nor should we ever. We even have folklore like Br'er Rabbit and the WB Frog was created after that John and the Black Snake African American folklore. There were even Dismal Swamp maroons who escaped slavery and lived in the swamps were whites were afraid to go to because of gators and mosquitos.

Very excellent, to be used as an added tool for home educating, on Black History which is American History, but often watered down and marginalized in the majority of schools, both public and private. I enjoyed this video very much, and it awakens the consciousness, to help people understand, that the mindset of making America great again, referring to the Gilded Age, is not necessarily a happy time period for African Americans and their ancestors. Bravo the actress who hosted this episode. Great job overall. I hope you have one about the women's rights movement that will feature Sojourner Truth!

To be fair the southerners saw African Americans as foreigners like how many over sea workers today. Also blacks did not contribute much to the predominately European Amerca. To say that segregation is entirely wrong is stupid, because there was no segregation in the North and West until after the great migration which seems odd if it was just "racist southners" especially once you consider that this is the area that supported the Union. The narrative doesn't hold when you put it to scrutiny. People will scream prejudice when talking of segregation, even though it seems that where ever once enslaved blacks went segregation soon followed, almost as if it was a judgement and not racism 🙊 Middle class/Rich blacks did fine up north and to limited degree in the south until the great migration. Also there is a major contradiction in the video as you state that African American leaders were brave and never gabe up, and literally thirty seconds early you spoke about them giving up on the "racist" south and fleeing to other parts of the country just for them to be treated the same...hmmm almost like they aren't victims at all.

Nonsense. African Americans contributed to almost every field, including helping to build this country as slaves without being paid and as cheap labor after emancipation. The South was racist aplenty. After all, 24% of Southern households owned slaves and Jim Crow later thrived there. Ill-informed opinions from people who want to think white people have done nothing wrong against African Americans are why learning of black history is important now more than ever.
