I just purchased two of his saws, a 9 inch dovetail and 12 inch hybrid tenon saw. Both cut beautifully out of the box with no dressing and the workmanship is excellent.
I just heard of Erik Florip today via this video - but I also discovered, very sadly, that Erik passed away last year after battling illness. Rest in peace.
$99 for a 9" dovetail saw is a great price. I have been following Erik for some time and I plan on all of my saws being made by him when I am done. They are less expensive than most of the big name saws and I feel they are an excellent investment in anybody's wood working arsenal!
Erik is a super guy, and easy to work with..Talked to him today and ordered my first saw from him today, can't wait to get it. This video is driving alot of (well deserved) business his way, makes me happy to support a US based manufacturer like this. This will not be the last tool I order from him.
Wood and Shop when I got it, I was just staring at it in disbelief, the quality is impeccable...one of those too good to be true moments that turned out to be true ...
I just order one also!! I was "this close" to ordering a LN after watching your other video, not that it would have been a bad decision. But, I really liked your honest description of Florip and I think it's great to support someone like Erik who has served our country!!
I've had my Florip saw for two years and love it. I have that saw and my Grandfathers Disston back saw that was made in 1880"s. They both cut very good and wouldn't part with them. I really like Rob Cosman but feel his saw's are over priced ($280).
Strongly considered this option after watching the video, but prices now on his website are $130-150 and the wait time is 15+ weeks. No bueno when there is so much competition out there in this market.
I don't really like Rob, I feel like he is always trying to hock me one item or another -- always saying that you will need to spend more money if you want to create things of quality. The truth is that the craftsmen of old built quality with what they had, and they didn't need to spend thousands of dollars at every high-end tool manufacturer, they made by with what they had. He's worked at many tool companies and it shows because he's always pushing their goods.
looks like a good thing doesn't last long -- checked out the site and his saws (although nice) are now priced up in the LN and Veritas stratosphere. Good old American craftsmanship comes at a price. No free lunch - even for us "average" folks.
Joe Solla interesting I posted the same information two weeks ago and a “person” climbed down my throat. He also got very insulting to me personally. I was cheap, my hair, my beard etc etc, the ironic part is I have been buying Rob Cosman saws which a twice the price of LN. I took my post down hopefully you won’t get flamed for your post.
Hey Larry, great post. Let those haters hate. It’s about all most of them have to do. Stick up for your thoughts and ideas. My Dad taught me you are not wrong if you speak the truth. As my Dear Old Irish Grand Pa said “May those that love us love us, and those that don’t may God turn their ankle, so we’ll know them by their limping”.
The prices have jumped a tad, but the price isn't too far from the cost of a Lie-Nielsen in the U.K. I don't like bringing price into things if I can help it, because I try and support small, independent businesses, and if it's an item which could potentially outlast me, then I will save very hard for it, but I'm looking at his website (very nice website it is too), and I can't really justify it at the moment. Hopefully, fingers crossed, he gets a U.K. importer, since his saws do look rather nice indeed.
I watched the video the other day about the dovetail sauce and I decided I really wanted to check into it so I looked up the website and then I decided that I really wanted one of the sauce but I hated the way 18 to 20 weeks well I thought about it the weekend and then Monday the 14th was my birthday and I decided I was going to go to woodcraft and go ahead and buy me a veritas song well I was in there looking at the veritas songs and I looked up above where they were setting and on top was one box and guess what was in that box it was a florip dovetail saw so I asked if I could open the box up and I said are you sure this is really one of these songs the girl said yeah so I open the box and sure enough it was one of the songs that I've been looking at online so I said well this is mine they said it had just came in this morning and the guy that put it up there he told me he just put it up there a few minutes ago and then I walked up and picked it up so I didn't have to wait 18 weeks but I sure am thankful that I got it and I think well that I saw your video on this guy it's just a great looking soul I can't wait to get home and try it out
Erik's a good dude. Got to know him over on the forums at LumberJocks. One day I'm going to own some Florip saws, though it's also my mission to make my own for personal use. They'll likely have Florip backs and saw nuts.
Thanks for the video. I have been looking at various saws including the Florip saw. I hear a lot of good things about it. When compared to the Lie Nielsen, aside from some of the shaping of the handle, what are some other notable differences? Thank you!
You're welcome! The teeth appear to be finer, which makes for a finer kerf (though slightly slower at cutting). But the comfort of the handle is the biggest difference.
They are rip, like chisels. I did buy about four saws from them, and had two filed crosscut, but at that small size the performance difference xc and rip is minimal.
It is in the description, but here's the link to the article: woodandshop.com/best-high-end-affordable-dovetail-saw-florip-toolworks-handsaws/ And here's the link to his website: floriptoolworks.com/ And yes, you can google the name of his company too :)
@@carlkaster7325 Good job! Sorry, I missed the 2nd part of your earlier question. If I could afford one of Rob Cosman's saws ($250), I'd let you know! I think there's a point of diminishing returns there. I'm sure Rob's saw is nice, but really, it probably can't cut any nicer than these.
Well here is hoping. In the past folks have lost steam when the orders mounted to the point where all they were doing filing teeth, until their head's explode.

The vibe in that woodshop with a fire rolling on a winter day would legit make me cry

Yes sir they are great saws I have purchased 2 of them and you can not beat them. They are well worth every penny spent
Awesome!
I just bought his dovetail saw on eBay for 99 bucks, it’s awesome, had no idea he made other tools ! I’ll be dropping a few bucks on his site !!!
Very cool!

Yes, definitely support Erik!
This is really good news.. Let me send this video to Paul Sellers channel.. I think he would like it

I'm a Marine and from Michigan, I'm going to have to buy a saw from this guy
Thanks for supporting him!
Hey I think that user was me! I'm glad you got a hold of some to try out. Erik does great work.
Awesome...thanks for the heads up!

None in stock and don't have an approximate time when you can order as of this evening. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed week.

Too bad, buy great for Eric!
I wish I would have seen this in 2019. There's a 10" Florip dovetail saw in Ebay today listed at $299. I also heard he was not making any more saws.
Just checked his web site wow what nice saws. Definitely in the future

Meant to reply to a different comment. Sorry :)
Great to know. I’ve been looking at his saws and wondered how good they are. Another thing to add to the list of tools I “need.”
I just ordered a dovetail saw based on this video looking forward to getting it.
Good job!
I just did the same. You gotta support guys like this.

They look very similar to rob cosmans saws I like mine from Rob but if I have any extra money I’ll try one of his
Is it worth paying more for the Florip than the Lie Nielsen (and waiting for ca. 6 months to get the saw)?
Nice, I’m going to have to consider this Maker when it’s time for a saw
Could you make it any more difficult to link to his site from this post???

I've had one of Eric's saws for around six months, and I love it. He does a great job.
Awesome
Of the Florip saws, which is the preferred size ? 10" 15ppi or the 9" 16ppi ???
Thanks for the video
Do yo have a link to the web site for purchasing the saw?
Wow I've been to this guys shop several times. Really cool to see this.

You're most welcome Robert!
Thank you👍👍!!!
I think I might treat myself I would love two support a Michigander like myself
Most definitely!
Rob Cosman makes them as well I believe.
Eh he charges fory for a wooden dovetail gauge.

If you're not too far from our school, we have a couple saw making classes here, taught by Tom Calisto: woodandshop.com/school
Thank you for sharing.

How would you compare the Florip small tenon with the LN carcass?
Never tried the Florip tenon saw.
At 3:04 Et Seq the teeth in the saw appear to be rip teeth.
Can you say whether they are filed to knife edges or as chisel tips?
They are rip, like chisels. I did buy about four saws from them, and had two filed crosscut, but at that small size the performance difference xc and rip is minimal.
I just went to his website and none of his saws are currently available
Edit: i just seen another comment that said he passed away. RIP Mr. Florip
Good news everyone.
Now $135 though. A disappointing 60% increase in a year
and 18 to 20 week waiting list,,,,, thanks to covid.
.017 thickness is a little scary for me. Thinner doesn't necessarily lead to finer work.
It has worked perfectly fine in my school.
Am I missing the link to his website?
Search for "florip toolworks"
It is in the description, but here's the link to the article: woodandshop.com/best-high-end-affordable-dovetail-saw-florip-toolworks-handsaws/
And here's the link to his website: floriptoolworks.com/
And yes, you can google the name of his company too :)
It says its unavailable now.
afffordable really is a tricky term with these european saws
how do you like the "benchtop saw"? I have it on my tools to buy list
It's great!
I'm thinking of ordering one. And, building my benchtop with it (bottom, too), to add to the meaning of it's name! :-)
Now the least expensive on the Florip site is $99.00 for a 9 inch dovetail saw.....
A great price!
It may be a fine saw but takes a year to get it. Some of us may not last that long🙂
The dove tail saws are $10 less than a lie-Nielsen.
Definitely nicer than LN, so it's a good deal.
Wood and Shop what’s nicer about them? I love the best tools and am interested. How do they compare to the Rob Cosman’s saws?

No longer $89. It’s $143 now :( you gotta love inflation.
Alas I am too late. $145 now. Coupon, anyone?
Yeah, I just saw that he raised his prices again.
Seems he is very backlogged. Don’t see anything available on his website.
As of today, the dovetail saw is $135 plus tax.
Well here is hoping. In the past folks have lost steam when the orders mounted to the point where all they were doing filing teeth, until their head's explode.
Hopefully his process allows for enough profit margin for him to hire help.
By the way the guy who made these saws died in 2023.
Jan., 2024 and it now looks like he is just reselling other people's saws, including Japanese saws and the Veritas.
Eric passed away at the end of December.
