for real, I would sacrifice one of the XLR for a SDI port or worst case, flip the timecode for a SDI because we can get timecode over audio these days...don't really know how well it works but I hear it works.
Bingo. That alone would bring SO much value to me and countless others. I run a livestreaming rig with 8 Canon cameras and the lack of SDI on the C70 often means “lesser” cameras are utilized just to avoid the potential point of failure of a HDMI>SDI converter, or the addition of a decimator, etc. I love the image this camera produces and don’t see a replacement that checks all the boxes (at least from Canon) quite yet, but I am eager awaiting the next announcement……
I have wondered for a long time why canon dont make more accessories for their cameras that they can sell on an after market.. like the backplates that was made for the RED komodo to change it to V-mount. Or maybe something like the c500 mark 2 / c300 mark 3 that makes it V-mount. - It would be so easy, and keep a lot of people hanging on to their canon gear until they annonce the next gen cameras :) Or maybe even an "adaptor" that is just RF to RF but with a speedbooster and an ND filter in it... its such a little thing, but would change the world for a lot of people. Now RED made their own ND filter.. And KipperTie made one also.. more and more makes NDs "build in" behind the lens.. But canon knows the lenses better and could make the best for their systems.. yeah.. if canon asked for ideas I would gladly take some days off to tell them what I think is missing :P hahhaha
Hate to answer question with a question but it always comes down to what you shoot, if you're very clear of the pros and cons of this camera and how far forward you want to anticipate your upgrade needs. I'm a documentary / field shooter and it's just right for me, being on the road a lot.
C70 is the camera that keeps on giving! On paper, it's time to let it go but in the field, it's still my favorite primary camera for documentary and corporate work!
@@GriffinConway C70 is by far the most versatile camera on the market: Only camera with a built in ND system that is color neutral and with enough stops to truly replace a matte box (also can be used with a polarizer unlike the EVND from the FX6). The rumored (and patented) C200 Mark II seems like it would be our dream boxy cam. I really hope it comes out with everything you've mentioned here, especially SDI, but also dual back mounted batteries wit the ability to add a battery plate for VMounts... I guess essentially a Komodo X but C70 internals.
I purchased my C70 about six months ago…. I have an R6 for Real Estate…. Learning the C70 is a STEEP learning curve for the 66 year old guy! I love it…. Don’t see myself ever selling it! Great video you made… really glad to see a pro like you wants to keep it!
I ended up picking up the R6 Mark II last Friday but another videographer told me I wouldn't be able to shoot in all intra at 60fps. So my options were R5 R5C but I already own the R5C so it seemed crazy to buy another one. I went with the C70 and I love the features of the camera but the crop center is really troubling me. I actually need a wider angle shooting myself in my office 60% of the time. I'm trying to get more corporate work or more outside work.
I also own 2 C70's and have been using them on most projects. We mostly shoot documentary work, and for that it is still really good. We recently used Arri 35 on a commercial. That footage was really easy to color in Davinci and looked incredible. That being said, I don't think client would have noticed the difference if we shot the entire thing on our c70's. As DP's we notice, but the viewer rarely notices the dynamic range and beauty of an Arri sensor. Lighting / intentional focus / Good framing mean so much more. All that to say C70's are still dope and I'll probably keep ours for another 2-3 years. Like you I'm looking for Canon to have a full frame version of the C70 that is box style and resolution of 5k or 6k.
For sure! People laughed when I compared the c70 to the Mini LF but I wasn’t doing it to get UA-cam views it was actually a personal test. We used the c70 as a b cam with mini lf as A cam and it’s hard to tell the difference after color
Hey Preston, thanks for watching. Hopefully people watching this can gain some perspective on how I use mine on a professional set and the things I like and dislike. The video was called “time to sell?” based on my own personal perspective. There’s no way to know everyone’s amount they use their own personal cameras / their financial situation etc. so I don’t want to make blanket statements of whether they should or shouldn’t sell and assume it is going to be sound advice for everyone.
I love my C70… and my R5C and R3… but I would without hesitation get the C70 mark 2 if it had: - SDI - off set screen like the c300 - full frame RF - build in ND - full XLR - V Mount on the back - screws in the bottom should be straight Why the F did Canon make an RF 24-105 f 2.8 thats for full frame cameras when they dont have a full frame RF Cinema camera with Build in ND.
Totally agree on the future cam stuff with the mounting plates and better durability. Still love mine though! Especially handy for filming doc / b roll in public (stripped down setup) since most people think I'm just taking photos haha.
You totally nailed my gripes with the C70 - I’ve just purchased one recently after shooting on a C100 M2 for years. Yes I love the C70 codec choices, image quality and improved autofocus. I thank Canon for the great firmware updates. I went into the purchase acknowledging the weaknesses of the super 35 sensor and the other quirks of this “odd duck” camera. The display is joke - especially because no EVF and it will be used frequently! The display hinge is horrible-even with the “improvement”. The C100 hinge is so strong you could swing the camera by the display (yes I’m exaggerating but you get the point) Yes, image is “soft” compared to other 4k cameras. Yes, the bottom plate is weird - I got a small rig plate which is almost a must. Yes, the build compared to the C100 is weak - seems like cheaper plastic. All said the camera still has a respectable feature set in a compact package. Great battery life for “run and gun” people in the field like me. I had to find a EVF solution shooting outdoors but I’m dealing with it. Overall still very happy with the camera even in 2024.
@@GriffinConway and please just give it the screen hinge from my R3. It‘s perfect. Just don‘t get it why the screen hinge from the C70 it‘s such a crap compared to the R3‘s. 🤷🏻♂️
I was looking for a camera that could match up with my R5C and everyone said the C70 was a better camera than the R5C. I can't argue it's not a better camera but for my use case the crop sensor is really leaving me with not many options. I'm shooting myself inside and getting severely frustrated with my lack of lens options. I'm going to now have to buy EF lens or something I'm not sure what to do yet
Canon has been quiet, but we will see major announcements next year. New C300, C500, a C90(Full Frame C70), and the R1. Those cameras have been hinted at many times, but we delayed due to the pandemic. Canon wanted to wait for the 2024 Olympics to show off all their new cameras.
I have that same combo and for me, no. I sell when I feel like I've out grown the cam. I'm still using only a fraction of the C70's capabilities on my pro gigs, even less on my C500 MK II. Anyone tried that new 24-105 f2.8 with the C70? how is it?
I've used the C70 a few times for weddings, and the flip screen is nice, but I would honestly like it better if it was a box style camera that was a tad less expensive, and I could just use a monitor and top handle. The form factor is weird and I end up putting another side handle on the cage anyway.
This is textbook Canon about to announce the C90 before end of year, right down to the 'I don't work with Canon, hey Canon lets work together' I see you Griffin, I see you!
I sold mine, I was super careful with mine, whilst I was shooting the hinge suddenly gave way, I wasn't even touching it. I took it to Canon Japan, they wanted $1000 to fix the hinge and told me it would take 10 to 12 weeks to fix. I thought Canon would offer better service. With that I sold all my Canon equipment Inc my 1dxIII's and lenses.
2 days is amazing!! Yeah was really disappointing, 10-12 weeks basically would have forced me into buying another one. I have gone back to my MB 6k Pro, I miss the 4 audio tracks, and extra 2 ND's, but otherwise super happy. BRAW is a lot nicer to work with.@@GriffinConway
We love our C70 too much to give it up. It's so versatile. Canon just keeps added more and more firmware updates. Only other camera I would jump to is an FX6 or 9.
Timely video. I have been shooting DSCM-2 reds, and I have enjoyed them, but letting them go because of some back and neck issues I am having. C70 is one of the cameras I am considering to replace them. Thanks for the update.
I am still in love with the image I get out of my C70 everytime I come to edit and grade, there is just so much maliability in the image and the highlight retention is glorious. I have graded it against FX6 footage and it still comes out on top. I doubt any end user would notice but it feels like a more pleasing image to look at. But my 3 biggest issues is the form factor, flippy screen and the HDMI only. Now that I've started to build it out with crews, the flippy screen actually bothers me less as I wouldnt need it to capture sound or change much that I can't map to a button. But when you're on your own and you need to adjust mic levels, especially when the camera is on rails with a v-mount battery, it gets annoying. A box camera would definitely be a preference next gen. I wouldn't even want a full frame sensor, I would just love the current image in S35 but maybe with a 3:2 sensor to accomodate anamorphic lenses, as well as a 6K resolution. That would do me just fine!
Working at a production house with four C-70's we've had to service them for the bad wiggly screens multiple times and currently they are already needing to be serviced again. This is for mostly corporate and non-profit, not anything crazy like a car commercial so I can imagine the durability being a huge issue for you like you mentioned. Love the camera and image quality for the price, wish they would release a box style too. Sony's FX-6 really crushed it design wise but that weird top handle is the only drawback... C-70 having the mini xlr in the body is an annoyance but at least it's fixed on it. Great video!
I think I’ll have to sell mine due to the following problems that are a deal breaker: 1. It overheats when exposed to temps above 200F -very troublesome to keep it running for more than an hour. 2. Difficult to balance it on a gimbal.: As soon as I change the lens from a telephoto to a pancake lens, the gimbal loses balance and I am having to rebalance again-very frustrating. 3. Has too many shooting modes that have extremely poor resolution of 24p. Industry is moving away from 1080p as insufficient, which is why 24p seems extremely low compared to 1080p. 4. Shutter settings are kinda gimmicky I think, because I couldn’t even locate a shutter when I removed the lens. I can achieve better results with the new iPhone or Samsung device and they’re more compact, and offer ip68 resistance to elements.
@@GriffinConway If you read my post, I specified that it overheated after an hour at 200F. I cannot rely on a camera that cannot withstand below average oven temperatures.
I did read your post but you stated “it overheats when exposed to temps 200f and above” which is different than saying “it overheated on me during a shoot”. I think that’s a specific use case but 99% of people won’t experience those temps because even in the hottest climates it’s still 50 degrees cooler than that
@@GriffinConway Man, I am clearly NOT being serious. I said “200F” and “oven temperatures”, confused frame rate with resolutions, saying “24p is too low vs 1080p”. I tried to troll jokingly. I also claimed iPhone and Samsung phone was superior… you can’t possibly take these statements seriously. Seriously though, C70 hasn’t overheated on me ever, and I’ve only used it for two days, in SoCal heat, under the sun half of the time. It is as solid as it gets. Love your channel, keep it going!
I love my c70 and C200. Two great workhorses still. C200 is still great on a tripod capturing wide shots in Raw. I agree about the flimsy screen hinge. It would be nice for cannon to offer a screen hinge upgrade and SDI.
I still love the c200’s. We use 4 in one of our studios as tripod cams as well. I would love if they took the c70 sensor/codec/frame rates and put it in the c200 body
I ditto your thoughts. A new Canon camera even box style would have to be off the charts, and it prolly will be but I'm not in a rush to swap out. It's a gorgeous image, easy to work with and reliable. I might part with "one" if a new badass showed up. Diggin' the R5c as of late. Also a really sweet image. Great vid!
the problem sometimes with 6k and 8k is the way overly sharp "digital" look....most filmmakers have been trying to get the "film look" for years since things moved over to digital and the c70 seems to be one of the few digital cameras capable of it (especially when combined with vintage lenses) ....or those 8k or 6k downsample and you can get lines skipped etc and it looks less-smooth especially in high frame rates... I am shopping for a c70 now to do my next independent film with
I agree I’m not a fan of the overly sharp image. If you shoot on the c500 mark ii or Komodo they don’t have the overly sharp image look IMO. I think it has a lot to do with internal sharpening. The only reason I want higher res is for commercial work when we need to crop and re frame
Well… i‘m still on my c300ii and you already want the next c70 😂😃 I sadly still never got to shoot on it but maybe on the mark ii then 🤷🏻♂️ Good to see you on my feed again Griffin!
Intriguing. I shoot the C300 MkIII and am with you on higher resolution being the main thing that would make me upgrade, as would RED-style third party touchscreen support and some other smaller things. But the C70 is getting so cheap used now that I'm tempted to pick one up as a B-Cam (I'm in China and see prices for non-beaten C70 around USD2,700). I do not care at all whether other people are getting rid of cameras all the time, for me they are a tool and I still prefer this mainly because I know it inside out and know I can always rely on it to get the job done. I have no problem with others feeling the same way about Sony or Blackmagic at this price range.
Everyone please do sell your C70’s. I need two more C70 bodies next year and I’d love to buy some used ones. 😅 They are old so sell them cheap please 🙏. Btw I picked up a used C70 for 4k a few months ago.
The most recent info from Canon has been a public speaking appearance talking about there new twisted photodiode as an immediate response to the shattering game changer Sony dropped with a mirrorless body global shutter camera. I'm surprised Mitsubishi allowed a global shutter on a mirrorless camera, for under 10k no less with all the Sony science, I hope Canon has some good stuff ready because I know what my next camera is lol
I like the C70, and the form factor is fun, but it doesn't add anything. It would be preferable to have something a little larger. Plus, if it were a little larger, a viewfinder could be added. The screen is too small to be very useful, and if the idea is more-or-less "run-and-gun," adding another screen with battery adaptations seems to be against the thesis, if not swimming upstream. I'm wondering what they're going to do with the new C200. Lots of decisions, e.g., EF vs RF, FF vs S35, recording media, price point. And since they move so slow in cinema, these have to be correct decisions.
@@damiencooper That makes sense. You need Red quality for what you are doing. Would you get C70 again if it was your first cinema camera? This year I ended up getting more video clients but just own my R6, so def looking for a more capable camera.
Yeah I enjoy the C70 as well. I do keep wishing of course that the Canon Cinema Line would progress. Obviously the cube camera with SDIs is what I want. But for what it does, the C70 is incredibly flexible. The other thing that isn't officially discussed is that with the RF to EF speedbooster, I can use the older 24-105 F4 and get an F2.8 out of it which is fabulous. I know the new RF 24-105 is the perfect documentary lens, but wow that's cool that the old EF version can get you the extra stop and wider field of view. Anyway, I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work and thanks for taking the time.
I think the C70 will be around for a while probably two to three yrs before the mk2, the next one I see coming is the C200 mk2, but obviously going to be quite a bit more then the c70 in terms of price. Still a great option
I agree w you, the only thing I do not like about my C70 is the dslr form, I also wish the camera had a rotating handle option like my c300 MKII and C100 MkII
Canon definitely working on something pretty big. Starting to pull in some influencer types, tested the water with this weird shaped C70. learnt what is actually needed etc. Wouldn't be surprised if next year / 2025 they drop something to seriously level the playing field with Sony. I kinda regret my C70 currently, and should have gone FX6, the shape is just so weird, those 1/4 20s not in the right alignment, so front heavy with a lens on it, flys on a gimbal weird, screen very fragile, can't assign the main scroll wheel to anything, can't use custom profiles - That would be very helpful to have a 25fps C1, 60fps C2 and a 120fps C3 for example. Manually setting these each time is lame, rolling shutter on it is actually pretty bad considering - It's great in 120fps, but then you lose DGO... Nah, this wasn't serving my need in the end. As you say though Griffin, video quality is still one of the best out there, I'm forever bowled over with the image in the edit, it retains so much. I really want a right hand trigger grip, FX6 is that right shape for me. Kinda feels like no one has them here in London, everyone on Sony's. Canon playing catch up and it's almost as slow as Panasonic was to get Phase Detect AF, is next year too late? We'll see! Not gonna sell mine, mainly because I'd have to take such a hit on resale price currently. Tested the market a bit and got no bites as well actually so...
C300 mark iii is missing a lot of what the c70 has. Smaller raw, lower power draw, better weather sealing, and better autofocus are the two main ones for me.
@@GriffinConwayWe've done quite some testing and saw no difference in AF between the two. You've observed differently? The battery power is definitely annoying. Canon told us when the camera was released, on why it draws as much power as an c500II is because of the DGO sensor double readout. Low and behold 6 months later de C70 with the same sensor draws 1/3th of the power. Luckily a firmware update fixed this partly and gave 50% more battery life. The codecs are even more annoying. I've talked with Canon a few times, they say the users of the C300 don't ask for more compressed raw. Which is of course bullshit, nobody would say no to more options. There is no reason for those lower bitrate C-raw codecs not to be in the C300. When it comes to long term support of their high models, Canon is very lacking compared to most other brands. Neither are weather sealed though, nothing is with a fan and vent. The build quality is miles better on the C300 though. Body, screen, hinge, dials, joystick all very flimsy. For us the higher versatility in form factor, i/o and expandability made the price difference a no-brainer.
@@hippy3000 I have a c500 mark ii and agree about no support for the higher models unfortunately. I would have really loved compressed raw in that one. Regarding autofocus I find the most useful mode by far is whole area autofocus which is not available at this time in the c300 mark iii / c500 mark ii
I love my C70 I think i prefer my fx3 for socials work and product work that is small but i find the colors more forgiving on the c70 and the highlight roll off is better so for work with people and talking heads I defiantly prefer the C70.
LOVE my c70's but definitely would love for the next version to be more of a modular box design with SDI and 6k resolution! Also….REALLY wanting to know what that vehicle was that we aren't allowed to see. 👀
The C70 is still my workhorse for sure, but I agree with each of your points, Griffin: 1. I wish it were at least 6k, whether for oversampling or for reframing; 2. I wish it were a box (I enjoy the form factor of the C200 more most of the time); 3. The bottom plate screw configuration is nonsensical; and 4. It's just not a very well-built camera. Even the EOS-R is better-built. For real. I guess I would also say that I get sharper images out of the C200 raw vs. the C70. I like the falloff better on the C70, but the C200 IQ (from raw codec) still seems sharper to me. Thanks for all your C70 content over the years, Griffin! Really appreciate you!
Question is, would you buy it as your first cinema camera now? I'm on the fence. Deciding between c70 and R5C, I know all the differences. I'm just scared that next year they'll announce a C70 markii after I pay a lot of money or something like that haha. Any advice? Thanks man!
I was in the same position as you about a year ago. Deciding between C70 and R5C. I was nervous that a camera from 2020 would be soon replaced after I picked it up. But after canon kept releasing fw updates with new features I went with the C70. Super happy with it. Beautiful for documentary and interview shots. I also do a lot of high end real estate photography. Ended up picking up an R5C a few weeks ago. Very happy with it as well being full frame and not needing an adapter for my 15-35 (needed an adapter on may EF 16-35 on the C70 to get closer to full frame), it's a great hybrid for real estate. But the C70 definitely feels more cinema in it's form factor and the built in audio and ND's. Also the R5C battery is horrendous so I have it caged with a Vmount battery to get decent shoot time.
Griffin, as you're thinking of letting go of the C70, I'm considering picking one up. Have a RED V-Raptor, but want something for my company's Canon glass to upgrade our older Canon DSLRs and have as a primary interview cam. My question on the C70 I don't see any good answers on are, does it suffer from moire issues? I know it doesn't have an optical low pass filter, and some reviews (albeit rare ones) complain about bad moire. In your time using it in shoots, interviews, or events (think weddings), has that ever been an issue? Thank you so much.
I shoot two C70s and do a lot of interviews and people b-roll. Moire can happen but it’s extremely rare. Not a regular occurrence or day to day concern. I saw it far more often on the C300 and the C300 Mark II.
Griffin I am at bit of a loss setting up my c70 to use the smaller 5 cine to make use of of the EL Zone feature in the color pipeline all I can get it to display on the input it sees is rec 709 and that won't work with the el zone..have you done a video on setting up the c70 to make use of this system..thank you
Hey Griffin, love your vids. Own two C70s. Love them. Learned a lot from your vids. I would love to know your exportsettings for best results of the C70 footage… tend to be not the sharpest…
Thank you for watching! I use the UA-cam 2160 preset when uploading to UA-cam. I actually prefer a slightly softer image though it looks more filmic IMO
I don’t like the flip screen…I handle it with care and use an external monitor. The new 24-105 2.8 will be a nice addition. The camera settings on the C70 are not are readily adjusted as some other cameras.
Thanks for the video, always interesting to see what tools you have and how you use them. I still have my C70 and plan to keep it for the near future. I also have the C500 MK II. I was under the impression that you had sold your C500 MK II, did you decide to keep it?
For sure! Thanks for watching. I was planning to sell my c500 and listed it but ended up hanging on to it. I think there is an new firmware for it so I may hang on to it for a while longer
I don’t love the flip out to the side screens in general but the only camera I’ve ever heard of people having genuine reliability problems with such a screen is the C70.
I've had mine since launch, and keep getting tempted to change up or do something different. I have also had two breakages, but one was me dropping it right off the top of a tripod onto a stone path on a Scottish island, and the other one was dropped when it was out for hire. The second time the screen was absolutely fine but the HDMI port somehow got fried. I do feel a bit like I'm babying the camera now when I get it out, but those were quite extreme drops and I'm not sure many other cameras would have been much different. That said I would love it if the screen was a different design. It still produces great images though and works for everything I use it for. I think I'm going to stick with it until there is something that genuinely feels like a big step up.
No one should lend their camera to Griffin! I love that when it's stripped down you can take it anywhere and not draw attention. If Canon could make the cold shoe hot, and able to take a EVF or even better power and control for a decent monitor.
Couldn’t afford the price of the C70, but opted for the Blackmagic 6k G2 instead (was on sale for $1,599). So far so good - loving the image I’m getting out of the BM!
I don’t think I’ll do a review on that one because I didn’t get to drive it, but we put it through the paces off road and it’s a beast! It’s also a super beautiful vehicle!
I like that canera but it’s a step back in several ways. I use 120p a lot an me would miss that. Would also miss whole area and face only autofocus. That said, I think the Komodo X is a great cam.
@@GriffinConway having the 6k to crop in post was kinda big for me like you mentioned. All my deliverables are 4k as well and it just didn't give a whole lot of room to do so. I also like the look of a full frame sensor and the compression it provides at wider focal lengths. Mainly cause I film people and not a fan of the distortion I get in super35 at wider focal lengths like 20mm. Haven't decided on which system I'm moving to yet but most likely Sony, because of the available glass.
@@GriffinConway Just FYI, on Mission Impossible 7, on a lot of action scenes, were used E2-F6 model, the new one F2-F6 Pro which I own, has some advantages, like dedicated 5" monitor, 12G SDI, dedicated V mount plate. This is like a FF Komodo, without raw recording capabilities.
I guess im the only person in the world that owns multiple cameras and use them based on the best tool for a particular job. We really need to get away from the "one camera" to rule them all mentality.

I can't see myself upgrading anytime soon. I run 2 C70's and now with the new RF 24-105 2.8 V lens coming out, it's just going to be even better. Plus, im happy to keep updaing it. THE ONLY THING THEY NEED IS AN ELECTRIC LEVELER!

To each their own 👍 my video is based on my perspective. I don’t shoot weddings so I don’t want to make a video about that. I make videos on my UA-cam channel based on my experiences, so that is what they will always be about, and I feel those that watch my channel understand that.
Oh ya…Canon, can we please have an SDI port on the next cam 🙏🙏🙏

I have wondered for a long time why canon dont make more accessories for their cameras that they can sell on an after market.. like the backplates that was made for the RED komodo to change it to V-mount.
Or maybe something like the c500 mark 2 / c300 mark 3 that makes it V-mount. - It would be so easy, and keep a lot of people hanging on to their canon gear until they annonce the next gen cameras :)
Or maybe even an "adaptor" that is just RF to RF but with a speedbooster and an ND filter in it... its such a little thing, but would change the world for a lot of people.
Now RED made their own ND filter.. And KipperTie made one also.. more and more makes NDs "build in" behind the lens..

I just got one a few months ago and I love it.
Nice congrats!
Ya that would be awesome! My hope would be a v mount solution on the back!
Good video but a little click bate title... It's a great camera. It still works when you drop it in ground and break connectors... 😅
lol was that Tucker running across in the back in the end?
Hahaha yes perfectly timed for my outro 😂😂😂
BLUF: Should you sell? he says "its up to you", He owns two and likes them and is not selling them. Just saved you 8 minutes.
I have three....dont see myself selling until the MII version is released.....
Sometimes a trash for you is a diamond for someone else...
The C70 will be relevant for a few years to come. It does almost everything extremely well. Awesome b cam.
For sure! Totally agree with you. Thanks for watching!
I love my C70… and my R5C and R3… but I
would without hesitation get the C70 mark 2 if it had:
- SDI
- off set screen like the c300
- full frame RF
- build in ND
- full XLR
- V Mount on the back
- screws in the bottom should be straight
Why the F did Canon make an RF 24-105 f 2.8 thats for full frame cameras when they dont have a full frame RF Cinema camera with Build in ND.
Haha I have those same cams and have the same wish list! Man I really hope they put a v mount plate on it
Totally agree on the future cam stuff with the mounting plates and better durability. Still love mine though! Especially handy for filming doc / b roll in public (stripped down setup) since most people think I'm just taking photos haha.
Totally agree! I love it for that too
You totally nailed my gripes with the C70 - I’ve just purchased one recently after shooting on a C100 M2 for years.
C90 with full frame DGO and 8K would be epic!
Exactly! Just charge my card soon as it’s ready lol
Yes! Sell them! I’ve been wanting this camera for two years and the current low offers on eBay are 3200! I’m holding out for $2800. 😎
I don’t have any info but ya that would make sense for sure. Usually they release the main stills/hybrid cams before the Olympics.
Always appreciate your measured, practical camera reviews.
Thank you Curtis! Same to you for all things audio!
I have that same combo and for me, no. I sell when I feel like I've out grown the cam. I'm still using only a fraction of the C70's capabilities on my pro gigs, even less on my C500 MK II.
Anyone tried that new 24-105 f2.8 with the C70? how is it?
I feel the same! I’m hoping to try the 24-105 2.8 soon. I’ll do a video if I get the chance
I've used the C70 a few times for weddings, and the flip screen is nice, but I would honestly like it better if it was a box style camera that was a tad less expensive, and I could just use a monitor and top handle. The form factor is weird and I end up putting another side handle on the cage anyway.
Ya I agree I would love the box style cam with c70 internals!
I own two C70 and honestly could not find any other camera on the market right now that would fit all my needs like the C70 does
I've been a camera operator for the past 20yrs and owned everything and the C70 is the currently the best camera I've owned and use for everything.
Nice! I love the c70 for sure
The C70 is a perfect B-cam to my C300 mkIII. Great matching 2nd cam for interviews and works well on a DJI RS3 Pro for gimbal broll.
This is textbook Canon about to announce the C90 before end of year, right down to the 'I don't work with Canon, hey Canon lets work together'
I see you Griffin, I see you!
100% would love to work with Canon again! They have made the cameras I built my career on so it’s always easy to have good things to say about them
I sold mine, I was super careful with mine, whilst I was shooting the hinge suddenly gave way, I wasn't even touching it. I took it to Canon Japan, they wanted $1000 to fix the hinge and told me it would take 10 to 12 weeks to fix. I thought Canon would offer better service. With that I sold all my Canon equipment Inc my 1dxIII's and lenses.
Wow that’s a wild experience. Canon fixed all mine in 2 days at the Costa Mesa repair center. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience!
I believe more firmware PAID upgrades will come before a new camera on this level comes out.
Dsmc2 reds are great in terms of image but the c70 is so much easier / faster / lighter to use. Hope your neck and back heal soon!
@@GriffinConway Thanks dude!
when I get to the step to register the luts I get an error saying "process terminated with error" and it doesn't let me load them?
The C70 is not long in the tooth yet until something else better comes around to market.
They shoulda just used the same hinge system the C-100's used, those suckers have never given me issues!
Ya the screens were the biggest drawback imo…but I’m extra hard on my gear lol. Thanks for watching!
I think I’ll have to sell mine due to the following problems that are a deal breaker:
Have you been able to get the c70 to overheat? I have shot with it in some brutally hot direct sun conditions and it never skipped a beat
I shoot in the Southwest Florida heat…. Never a problem with my C70. My R6 Mark 1 is a problem
@@GriffinConway but wouldn't that be a C300III? ;) With exeption of the EVF
Bring us the box!
Yes!
How much you selling it for? 😂😅
If they put the R3 sensor in a C70 body?
Bro make some new C70 Stuff!!! 🥹
I sold mine only to regret it.
What are you shooting on now?
I have 2 R5C. I wish I would have kept it for the audio, full size HDMI, battery life and built in ND filters lol. Other than that the R5C is a beast😂
FULLLL FRAME!!!!!!!!
Great vid!
Hey Scottie! Ya I have the r5c and it’s a great tool as well when you need photo/video. I’m with you! A box style cam would be great
the problem sometimes with 6k and 8k is the way overly sharp "digital" look....most filmmakers have been trying to get the "film look" for years since things moved over to digital and the c70 seems to be one of the few digital cameras capable of it (especially when combined with vintage lenses) ....or those 8k or 6k downsample and you can get lines skipped etc and it looks less-smooth especially in high frame rates...
@@GriffinConway if you have to do a lot of cropping and punching in, the extra resolution helps for sure!
Well… i‘m still on my c300ii and you already want the next c70 😂😃
I sadly still never got to shoot on it but maybe on the mark ii then 🤷🏻♂️
Good to see you on my feed again Griffin!
Hey bro thanks for stopping by again! Hope you are doing well.
same here, I still use the C70 every week and it has a very nice place in our workflow.
the full frame version of c70 in 2024
That would be the dream with a few form factor tweaks
Do you mind sharing a link for these 2700 usd c70s? Thanks!
I would love if they have a nice third party touchscreen like red has. That would open a lot of size/brightness options too. Thanks for watching!
Sold both my C70s a month ago
Komodo’s now?
What did you ended up getting, tho? 😢
You were one of my to go guys for this camera haha.
@@a-mediastudio7219 yeah. Got the Komodo X and a Komodo. We will see what canon comes up with next
Lost 2 screens on mine. Needs a better attachment.
Wow I’m actually surprised how many people also had bad experiences with their screens. I thought it was just me because I’m hard on my cameras lol
Sounds like you’re describing a c300III when talking about the form factor and durability. :’)
Regarding autofocus I find the most useful mode by far is whole area autofocus which is not available at this time in the c300 mark iii / c500 mark ii
you are absolutely right, canon cameras need a little push in terms of stability, the screen of my r6mark ii is also easy to break haha
I love my C70 I think i prefer my fx3 for socials work and product work that is small but i find the colors more forgiving on the c70 and the highlight roll off is better so for work with people and talking heads I defiantly prefer the C70.
Also internal ND’s haha. That’s why I always end up grabbing the c70
LOVE my c70's but definitely would love for the next version to be more of a modular box design with SDI and 6k resolution! Also….REALLY wanting to know what that vehicle was that we aren't allowed to see. 👀
Turns out I was allowed to show it! It was the vehicle shown in the test shots earlier. The Ineos Grenadier
best camera ever, but add an EVF!
I’m not an EVF shooter because my right eye sight isn’t as good as my left but I know a lot of people like that
The C70 is still my workhorse for sure, but I agree with each of your points, Griffin: 1.
Thanks for watching through the years!
Love your videos!!! please keep em coming
Griffin I am at bit of a loss setting up my c70 to use the smaller 5 cine to make use of of the EL Zone feature in the color pipeline all I can get it to display on the input it sees is rec 709 and that won't work with the el zone..have you done a video on setting up the c70 to make use of this system..thank you
I wouldn’t be the guy to ask for that! Haha I still use standard false color
Ya the new 24-105 2.8 looks great can’t wait to try it
Thanks for the video, always interesting to see what tools you have and how you use them.
Ya same. I would prefer a screen option like red dsmc2
Enjoyed the video, Griffin. I'm glad you are working a lot. I'm still shooting my C70 and it's a great tool for me.
Hey Joe! Hope you are doing well my friend. I agree, the c70 is such a great tool!
I've owned a C70 for the past 2 years, absolutely love it. I'm buying a second C70 for a B Cam soon.
Nice! Love using both my c70’s
100% with you. I’m waiting for something that’s a big step up as well. It’s still such a great tool
Definitely keeping mines. Especially since the 24-105 2.8 is coming. Can’t wait to see how they play together
I’m hoping to try out the 24-105 2.8 soon!
Sure love mine. After 2 years though, the screen IS starting to get a little wobbly. Totally love the image quality.
Yes exactly the same as you haha
Favorite Camera I own to this day! Who's that big dude running in the background. He's got great form!
#kingranch
C70 still rocking here. I wouldn't trade it. SDI ports would be ideal on the next camera.
For sure!
No one should lend their camera to Griffin!
I love that when it's stripped down you can take it anywhere and not draw attention.
If Canon could make the cold shoe hot, and able to take a EVF or even better power and control for a decent monitor.
Hahaha so true 😂😂 I agree I love the stripped down version too because it’s simple and low profile
Would love a gaffer video on how y’all rigged the cameras on this shoot! From the locked off ones filming the tires to the russian arm - ronin 2
I did all the rigging for the Motocrane/ronin 2 as well as the hard mounts on the vehicle. Maybe I’ll do a video on that.
Thanks for the video man! I love my C70, it's a workhorse. What headset are you rocking?
Hollyland solidcom c1 pro. They are so amazing! I really love them and they change the way we work on set in a major way
Awesome video. Thanks
Love the C70 but the fragile monitor is such a mystery. Why Canon?
I’m surprised at how many people had bad experiences with it! But ya a hinge / monitor upgrade would be great
In all honesty if I had a C200 with C70 codecs I’d be set for life. I own both bodies though.
I have had that exact same thought. Totally agree
6K 120 FPS + SDI and it would be 100% perfect.
This 👏👏👏
Canon C70 isn't going anywhere for me. Need a second one honestly.
It’s a great camera!
sold. butloved. dji ronin4d now. one man band camera.
I haven’t tried the ronin 4d yet but I think I’m going to try it soon.
Cool! Looks like fun
Couldn’t afford the price of the C70, but opted for the Blackmagic 6k G2 instead (was on sale for $1,599). So far so good - loving the image I’m getting out of the BM!
That’s a great camera! Hope you are enjoying it!
Enjoying everything but the file sizes! 6k is amazing!
can you also do a little review on that ineos grenadier? :D so cool to see one in action!
I don’t think I’ll do a review on that one because I didn’t get to drive it, but we put it through the paces off road and it’s a beast! It’s also a super beautiful vehicle!
Sounds like you might want the Komodo x haha
I like that canera but it’s a step back in several ways. I use 120p a lot an me would miss that. Would also miss whole area and face only autofocus. That said, I think the Komodo X is a great cam.
Firstly, I miss your regular content. I also own 2 C70's and I have no intention of selling them anytime soon. Great cameras.
Thank you! UA-cam has been tough for me with family/running my production company/regular life but I’ve got a few more videos coming soon!
@@GriffinConway All the very best to you, the family and company. Looking forward to your upcoming content!
What grip gear do you use to get the wheel shots?
Mostly c stand arms and cinemilled baby pins and cinemilled suction cups
Just bought it ❤ can't wait to film with it
Awesome! Congrats!
actually trying to sell mine now lol just doesn't fit the way I like to shoot, which is probably a me thing and not the camera
Nice, curious to hear your thoughts on what you didn’t love and what you are moving to
@@GriffinConway having the 6k to crop in post was kinda big for me like you mentioned.
Try Z Cam E2-F6 Pro)
I haven’t found many people in my area with z cams so I haven’t had the chance to try them out, but the image looks great from what I’ve seen
I own a C500 mark ii, two c70's, R3, R5c, a Fuji x100f, multiple gopros, a mavic 3, and a few others. This video was about the C70 and what I like/don't like and what I would hope for in a future cam.
So true! Would love an internal level like the mirrorless cams
Everything you have listed here is only suitable for your niche with a car. Most of the photographers who buy this camera are for weddings and documentaries, instead of investing in a suitable camera, you may have decided to buy a camera with a lower budget. Your video is irrelevant and only harms those who really want to buy. This camera is intended for wedding, event, and docu photographers.
To each their own 👍 my video is based on my perspective. I don’t shoot weddings so I don’t want to make a video about that. I make videos on my UA-cam channel based on my experiences, so that is what they will always be about, and I feel those that watch my channel understand that.
