If you don’t skip Phantom Menace, Machete order can actually really build up the hype of Episode 6 because even if you know the Vader twist it gives us new information about how Conflicted Anakin is and makes the scenes he’s in during Episode 6 all the more compelling

I personally prefer Machete because, despite the ruined force lighthing reveal, it helps building up the end of 6, we know who the emperor is and, because we have already seen how Vader originated, makes his turn to the light more significant, as well as the empire's fall

I think the 2 movie gap between episode 5 and 6 is too big tho. If you have a gap in between 4 and 5 or a smaller gap then it would work better.

@Antonio-Gransci I never said I knew more than who made them. I just gave my opinion. Solo & Rogue One are stand alones that be watched anywhere. I pretty much do release order with the numbered movies, but Lucas had to change the look of Anakin in Return of Jedi. Now you wouldn’t know who that is unless you watch the prequels first.

One possible resolution to the oddness of the Sequel Trilogy after Return of the Jedi when watching in Machete Order is to watch The Phantom Menace between the two films. Now that The Mandalorian is out, I'd possibly say watch that instead, and the Sequel Trilogy, like The Phantom Menace are bonus films. I'm a big Machete Order fan when watching the easy-to-find versions. If you have access to the despecialized editions, Release Order is a good way to go. Before the Sequel Trilogy existed, I would have said Machete Order. Now that it exists, I think either Release Order or Machete Order, but I'm a fan of Machete Order. I think the Luke and Leia reveal is more dramatic with Machete Order. The force lightning shock is definitely lost, but the Emperor reveal is gained with Machete Order. It's a dramatic reveal if you recognize his voice at the end of Attack of the Clones, or if you find out later. The Phantom Menace ruins that reveal, and is good to watch after you know everything.

I still think machete order (though i wouldn't skip Phantom Menace.) You see I can see how it can be jarring going from 80s to 00s and then back again. But do you know what else is jarring? Watching Return of the Jedi then going back in time to better cgi. It's weird either way you look at it. And I respect your opinion that a 3 film long flashback takes from the overall story, but I think that it helps the impact of the finale. It's ok watching Return of the Jedi and seeing Vader be redeemed without watching the sequels first, but we are kind of just taking George Lucas's word for it. We are told he was once a great Jedi and a good man. But all we have seen up until this point is a faceless man in a dark suit who has murdered his way across the galaxy. Luke can sense the good in Vader but we can't. And we cant see the man he once was, only the monster he has become. We just take the word of Obi Wan's memories and Luke's feelings as fact. Whereas watching the prequels first, we can see Anakin's story before the Skywalker saga comes to a close. It is after all meant to be the story of Luke and Anakin, but the original trilogy tell us very little about Anakin's story. I think it makes so much more sense to see A New Hope (which I agree is always the best place to start), It is Luke's introduction to the world, which is our introduction, because Luke is our eyes and ears. We are being introduced to the Jedi and the force, because Luke is also being introduced to them. And then Empire Strikes Back is where we really start to see the world get fleshed out with the introduction of Yoda and the stakes getting bigger with Han's capture. And of course the father reveal. But what happens next works. Don't get me wrong. Return of the Jedi after Empire obviously works. But there is a long gap in between films. A long gap where off screen Luke is battling with his emotions. We have just learnt of Vaders true Identity, just as he has. And like him, we need time to process that. Luke can search his feelings, he can piece together what little he knows from his aunt and uncle. And he does this off screen for a year. We don't get to follow this. But, lets imagine for a moment, that the beginning of the prequels started with Luke stepping into an old jedi temple and searching for documents. And he finds what he is looking for and he finds information on his father. And then we see the prequels. In that sense, we would still be following Luke as he learns the truth about his father. This of course doesn't happen. But since we never see how Luke really learns about his father and how he knows that there is still good in him and knows that he is redeemable, then we have to just deal with watching the prequels off of our own back and not to follow Luke as he learns to truth, as we have done all throughout the first 2 films. But i really think it's beneficial to pretend like we are learning with luke, that he is reflecting, he is searching his feelings and that is what the prequels are. Luke finding out what happened. And the bonus is we can now see why Luke sees good in his father. We can see how he was a little slave boy who wanted to help others, who had to fight a war, he lost people close to him, was manipulated by the evil Emperor but all along he was sympathetic because he did all the evil that he did because he wanted to save his wife, luke's real mother. Now we know who Anakin was, and we can see why Luke felt that Vader could be turned. And we can finish the saga in the one place it should end. The saga should always end with Return of the Jedi. And I want to make it very clear now that whatever order you choose to watch it in, do not watch the sequels because they undo everything the first 6 films meant. So always end with Return of the Jedi. Because this is the conclusion. This is the culmination of two stories, Anakins and Lukes, which now better understand, knowing that Anakin was a good man, which we can see form the prequels, and we can see how Luke grew from farm boy to Jedi Master, having learnt from not only Obi Wan and Yoda but learning compassion and forgiveness from the journey we have both shared finding out more about the Jedi Knight Anakin rather than seeing just Darth Vader. Now as for the final elephant in the room. The reveal of Leia. I had seen all of the originals before I saw Revenge of the sith. So of course I knew about Luke and Leia being siblings. But i never saw it as a big twist or surprise. To me, the reveal was weak. Obi Wan say you have a twin and Luke just says Leia, I sense it is Leia. And again, we cannot feel what Luke feels. We cannot confirm it until Obi Wan says, your feelings serve you well. The scene already doesn't exactly have any fanfare, but it seems to just fall extra flat because we have that moment to question the reveal. I dunno. It just felt like a last minute decision, because it was. If George had always intended to have the two be siblings then why the hell did he have them kiss? It was a last minute decision and so the scene didn't feel earned. And having luke just pause for literally a moment and go oh I know. To me the scene never sat right. Now the revenge of the sith scene doesn't exactly play perfectly either. But it's nice that the reveal that she is carrying twins isn't revealed immediately. I imagine that to someone who didn't know Luke had a twin, let alone Leia, the sudden news that Padme has two children in her womb would be a complete surprise. I didn't know he had a twin. What happened to it, who is it. You would have all that going around your head. If you are watching this video, i think it's safe to say you already know what happens, you've seen the films. Presumably for most people in release order. SO it must be hard to imagine watching that scene completely clueless. But imagine suddenly finding out he has a twin and then Padme calls it Leia. BANG. To me, It's more impactful than Yoda spoke of another, who is it, it's your twin, oh yeah Leia, I somehow always knew. And what else makes more sense, if you do chose to look at this order as the flashback being a break in the year time jump between VI and VII, and you chose to look at this being Luke spending a year trying to gather and connect his thoughts, his feelings and his memories to peice together the truth about his father, it actually makes more sense that he immediately knows it's leia. It's like he has vague memories or has a strong feeling which he has been thinking about constantly since he found out about his father. And now that he knows for a fact that he has a twin, his feelings make sense, the pieces fit. So I do actually prefer the Leia reveal being from Revenge. Its more in your face, it makes sense that what we see in the prequels is Luke reflecting on his feelings in between films. And it makes the slow pace of the reveal in Jedi make more sense because it's not really a reveal anymore, but rather a confirmation to luke that his feelings are correct.

I actually think the Luke & Leia storyline is just as powerful when revealed in Ep III. If someone hasn't seen SW before, has watched Eps III & IV, then goes back to the prequel trilogy, it is still a big surprise to learn that Luke has a twin sister, and that she is Leia. Then go back to ROTJ to wrap it all up. Otherwise having ROTJ before the prequel trilogy is like reading the end of the book before the beginning.
If anything, you can drop the sequel trilogy. It has nothing to do with the 6 other films.

Isn't episode order better for people who already know about Star Wars from trivia etc?

  • @BlueBoboDoo100

You don't give enough credit to the siblings twist in Ep3. You know that Padme's pregnant with Luke, but the ACTUAL reveal is when she's giving birth and the droid says there are twins. This is shocking to the viewer and Obi-wan. Suddenly, you don't know what's going to happen, and when she names the twin Leia, there's a quiet beat right after to give the audience a moment to react. Plus you get more foreshadowing with Padme's hair styles being similar to Leia's.
Having watched both ways with first-time viewers, i think the twist is MUCH stronger if shown in Ep.3. In 6, it feels like it comes right the heck out of nowhere and many people tend to react negatively to it (as they did in the 80's).

As a kid, I was, of course, simple minded and thought it was obvious that you go in chronological order. As I've gotten older, I've realized that is the worst order for someone new to the franchise. You said it perfectly. I couldn't of explained it better. I've become aware of Machete order and I've honestly become intrigued by it and I've been torn over whether that or release order is better. I've listened to many opinions, but I feel that you have articulated your opinion better than anyone else I've heard. You have fully convinced me that release order is the best. All of your points were spot on. Thank you for helping me make up my mind. Now I'll know what to tell a newbie when they ask what order to watch it in and have peace of mind. i dont understand the point of showing lukes conversation with leia as something ruined by machete order: either way the audience has already learned the twist, either from leias birth or bens admission.
i can see the argument for the need for a palette cleanser between VI and VII, but i dont think the prequels are ideal for it. the prequels, imo, arent functional as a story without the originals- revenge of the sith opts for gratuitious setup for the originals instead of giving itself breathing room to end as its own story by, for example, ending on the mask coming over vaders head. thats why i think episode iii works best as a prelude to episode vi, and machete order is better.
as for a buffer between vi and vii, solo seems like a better option imo: han backstory before the film he dies in is good, and it gives setup to his dice in tlj. the only issue is that making mauls cameo work requires additional homework, with clone wars and at least the fight at the end of tpm

    • @LilacSreya
      @LilacSreya 10 місяців тому

Prequels are perfectly functional on their own. OT fanatics have a bad habit of making them the center of the universe and simply can’t comprehend when PT tries to do its own thing. Watching prequels chronologically shows this - the suit’s importance is to visually signify a new stage in Anakin same as his other looks of kid to adult and outfit changes; the “gratuitous” “rushed” complaints don’t hold when the series is watched chronologically, as is intended.

    • @nedalsoned9940
      @nedalsoned9940 10 місяців тому

@@LilacSreya @LilacSreya the phantom menace and revenge of the sith have critical pacing issues completely divorced from the ot.
and i dont disagree with the visual storytelling of the suit: i literally said that ending there would make iii a stronger story. revenge of the siths ending is heavily reliant on the settings and imagery of the originals. the story isnt standing on its own divorced from the OT because it clamours to show you the tantive iv, the death star, and the binary sunset. watching iii having not seen iv makes the ending flatly less engaging.

Release order doesn't work because you are left with too many unanswered questions after you finish the original trilogy first. You don't know how Darth Vader ended up in that suit, exactly what made him turn to the dark side in the first place, who Luke and Leia's mother is and what happened to her, how the Emperor rose to power, how Yoda ended up on Dagobah, and so much more.

If you watch reaction videos you will see the problem, it should be an impactful moment at the end of the film, but instead people are puzzled and wondering who this young guy is, and it loses its power. I call it “Its like poetry they rhyme order”
    Star Wars: A new hope
    Star Wars: The Phantom Menace:
By watching phantom menace after new hope, it gives you context on anakin skywalker and the Jedi
    Star Wars: Empire strikes back:
Phantom menace sets up how the force could be used and also teases palpatine a evil reign. This is because sidious first appears in empire strikes back
Star Wars: Attack of the clones:
You learn how Anakin turned to the Darkside and learn how he fell in love with padme
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: You watch this after Return of the Jedi so you learn how Luke and Leia are sister
Rouge One: A Star Wars story:
Rouge one is set up directly after revenge of sith
    Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Connects directly from force awakens
    Solo: A Star Wars story:
Watch solo after last Jedi because of the after effect of Hans death and also Leia pondering over Hans dice which is a big part of Hans character in solo
Star Wars: Rise of skywalker: Then here’s the finale

Now that The Mandalorian has restored my faith in Star Wars (I still am excluding the sequel trilogy, unless they clean it up BIG TIME).
After watching Mando, my teenage daughter wants to watch them (she knows the basic story, but doesn't know all the details). I personally like a modified machete order, this is the order I'm thinking about
    1. Rogue One (THAT Vader scene)
    2. A New Hope
    3. Empire
    4. Phantom Menace
    5. Attack of the clones
    6. Debating adding Clone Wars film here. I'm unsure of putting a cartoon in, but the Ashoka character might be important. I doubt I'll add the series though, that's just too much
    7. Revenge of the Sith
    8. Return of the Jedi
    9. The Mandalorian
    That's my order for now

Rogue One is cool, but I definitely wouldn't recommend showing it first. The thing most people get wrong about Machete Order is that the idea is to throw The Phantom Menace out completely. The guy who envisioned it has said many times that he still sees a place for it. It's an optional bonus film that can be watched later on, like Solo, the Rebels series, the Holiday Special, etc. I definitely think if one is to do Machete Order with the Sequel Trilogy, it might be cool to show Mandalorian in between.

@Bartosz L It's crap, but it's referenced a lot. Also, nothing wrong with something being non-canon. Shadows of the Empire was pretty damn epic. Not throwing that out for not being canon.

I think the best order is
    1: A New Hope
    2: Solo
    3: Empire Strikes Back
    4: All Prequels
    5: Rogue One
    6: Clone Wars
    7: Return of the Jedi
    8: All Sequels
    The Reason:
I think starting off with the original introduces it the best way. By watching the Phantom Menace, made after A New Hope, assumes you watched the OG trilogy. The reason Solo is next is to give some background for Solo as he is a big character in Empire Strikes Back. Prequels are next to set the stakes for what’s going to happen in ROTJ, and Rogue One is after that to set the stakes even higher so you can see all that was sacrificed for the rebellion. The Clone Wars is there because why not, and then ROTJ is next because it is the big climax. Then the skippable sequels.

I personally prefer watching everything according to release order. Is better. Easier. Especially with so much content. You have the tv movies. The tv series. It gives you a headache trying to figure out the chronological order. And I do the same with Marvel, DC, everything.

  • @JBoxy7

For a first viewing or if your watching every episode release order is best. But if your already a fan and are watching every single movie then chronological order is best.
If the original trilogy is THE story tho. Then my prefered watch order is IV, Solo, V, III, VI.
This way there is a one movie gap between each main story. This makes the main story seem bigger and longer, it also works cuz there are time gaps between each main movie. New hope introduces han who is a fan favourite side character so you watch solo next which expands on him and everything surrounding and introduces characters like lando. Then you go into empire strikes back where han has a bigger role and lando comes into the main story. You also learn more about the jedi and the force in this one and introduce yoda and the vader is anakin skywalker twist. Then you go into revenge of the sith where you learn how the empire and darth vader came to be. Everything wraps up perfectly. Finally, your at the finale of the series, return of the jedi where everything ends in the most satisfying way.

Here's a modified version of the machete order:
Cloak of Deception (trimmed down fan edit of Phantom Menace by Hal9000- faster paced and less goofy shit from jarjar and baby anikin),
    Clone wars,
    Rouge one,
    A New Hope,
    Empire Strikes Back,
    Revenge of the Sith,
    Return of the Jedi.
This order quickly drops you into the universe during a time of peace and shows what the Jedi and Old Republic were like at their zenith, but doesn't give away who Darth Vader is (from Clone Wars, a new viewer could imply Anikin simply gets kicked out of the jedi order for marrying Padme and Obiwan trains Vader in his place).
Going to Rouge One sets up the Empire as evil dickheads from the perspective of normal people in the universe, shows the force as an ancient religion that has non-space-wizard followers, and shows how most everyone sees Darth Vader as basically the grim reaper who lives in a castle on planet hell- no further backstory needed. Also makes the Obiwan/Vader fight look more like two experienced warriors being cautious of each other instead of two old men swinging glowsticks, as both have been established as badasses at that point.
ANH and Empire build off this, and directs the focus to Luke's arc- we learn about his past pretty much as he does, and the choice to go to Bespin is more relatable since we haven't yet seen Anikin's fall to the darkside. The big reveal at the end of Empire hits like a ton of bricks; we last saw Anikin at his wedding, in a seemingly 'happily ever after' end to his arc, so the reveal is much more shocking and horrific- in the 8+ hours we've sat through at this point we've seen Anikin as a troubled but relatable character who's tragic flaw is his care for others, similar to Luke.
Revenge of the Sith is a flashback, Godfather Part II style, that puts the last piece of the puzzle together and brings the focus of the narrative back on Vader. It is the lowest point for his character, as well as the galaxy at large with the fall of the Jedi and Republic, and sets us up for the highest point in the series- his redemption.
Watching Return of the Jedi right after Revenge of the Sith leaves the previous film fresh in the audiences mind; we can feel his pain when he says 'it's too late for me' and can see why he believes it. We can feel the deep conflict he has in the throne room showdown, and it makes his decision to kill the emperor more than just a father saving his son; It's a man who's whole life has been manipulated and controlled by others; first by watto, then the council, then the emperor, finally takes back his agency. It becomes a moment where a slave throws off his chains.

I think you sort of miss the point of the Machete order: it is all about making the last movie viewed feel like a true finale for the saga. It follows a true narrative arc, and doesn't overplay its hand. The problem with release order is that the viewer gets the finale before the character development. Particularly for Luke and Anakin/Vader. You see, watching the prequels after the originals treats them and their characters as separate, unrelated entities. But saving the finale for after the prequels treats them as one story, and delivers their conclusion at the same time.
What's critical to understand is that reveals like force lightning and the twins have little narrative value. However, reveals about the final destiny of the main characters absolutely do. Watching the prequels the whole way through without knowing Anakin's final act in ROTJ actually sets up for his final decision. Watching the prequels before ROTJ makes real the possibility of Luke's turn to the dark side, in ways that the original trilogy on its own is simply incapable of. If you draw the release order and the machete order out on a story board, it is the machete order which follows the better story structure, with rising action, higher and higher stakes, all building to a climax and a resolution worthy of all that was viewed before it.
And that's really the issue here. The finale of a narrative is the focal point and the culmination of everything. Release order and episode order are both "quick and easy" paths that sacrifice the focal point of the saga.
(P.S. In the context of any watch order discussion, anything that happens chronologically after ROTJ is narratively unimportant and should be ignored. None of it is useful to the larger story. It is its own thing and should be treated as such.)

@Antonio-Gransci I like the prequels if it wasn't clear in the original comment, but you can't deny that most of the dialogue was poorly done, and acting confusedly directed at times. The characters just did not speak like people.
Lucas's grandiose dialogue works in epic climaxes, such as Anakina and Obi-Wan's duel on Mustafar, but not in quieter less dramatic scenes. It's a shame because the dialogue is the main vector with which most people understand a film. If it is lacking then people dismiss the whole thing without looking for subtext.
Take the "I don't like sand" scene. The reason Anakin says this is because he is reflecting on his poor memories of his home world, his preference for life on Naboo, and most importantly that his mind is dwelling on his mother back home rather than on the task at hand. It would be perfectly good layered dialogue, except it just didn't work on its base level of being normal human dialogue. It was very awkwardly presented and acted, and what's worse, Padme isn't phased at all, implying that the level of awkwardeness wasn't intentional. It's why the line about Anakin being worried for his mother has been memed into his unusually effective flirting technique.

    • @Heligoland360
      @Heligoland360 Рік тому

@Antonio-Gransci Yes the films are better than most of what is being put out there, but they had the bones to be some much more. Episode 3 could've been the uncontested best Star Wars film with just a wee bit of tweaking. Missing out on that potential counts as poor execution in my opinion, even if it is down to just a few weak elements.

@@Heligoland360 I’m SICK and TIRED of this stupid “but muh dialogs” complaint. I never had any issues with the prequels dialogs. It’s just people narrow bubble complaining, the dialogs were always meant to be fairtytale like timeless words that can be translated into any culture (Alec Guiness/Obi Wan described OT as “fairytale rubbish”) whereas this “normal people speaking” just makes everything dated. This is what doomed sequels, the dialogs there sound like average american millennials having chit chat.
This whole prequel dialog complaint just sounds like a pretentious karen hate club that I just couldn’t bothered to be a part of. I (and many others) just don’t care. We’re not gonna ruin the rest of the movies’ enjoyment for this nitpick.
