- This song was originally written by Chris Eaton, but Amy Grant wanted to record it and asked Chris if she could rewrite some of the lyrics from a woman's perspective, namely Mary. Chris agreed. So this is Amy's version. The images are from the wonderful movie "Nativity Story"; if you have not seen it, do it, whether it's Christmastime or not.

This song got me through my stepfather’s diagnosis of glioblastoma and ultimately his death. At the same time my husband was also in the hospital battling serious infection and has since passed as well. When I feel alone I turn this on and remember all I need is a breath of heaven.

I think in many ways we are. For mary to face a lot of adversity in her life does represent our own life too. This song has so much meaning and I cry everytime. I lost my brother 2 months ago and I miss him terribly.
No. The essence of the song tells us she is frightened, unsure, lonely and afraid. As we all are when we are caught or confused or struggling with a reason to believe. She trusts something larger and herself and quite mysterious. There was no Christianity for Mary. Fully human, Jewish and confused, she worked hard to trust the mystery. That's the idea anyway. As we all do.

I have to sing this for choir this year, it instantly became my favorite song I've sang in high school thus far.
This is a holy song. Weighty and specific in it's cry for God's divine guidance and direction. Though sung as (as a perspective) through Mary's eyes to what she "may" have been feeling; surely these words can be applied to our own lives as we focus and many times struggle to walk uprightly in a world where many act as if God doesn't exist.

My Mom was very sick most of 2018. She passed away a few days before Christmas, and this song played every time I got in my car. Going to or coming home from the hospital until she passed. It gave me a lot of comfort.

Whenever I hear this song, I am carried to an indescribable place. I get CHILLS every single time I hear it & sometimes 'weep.' My Cousin had a Soprano Celtic Singer sing it at her bedside while she was 'dying' with her 6 adult children surrounding her. Well, the song was originally written by Chris Eaton. As I said in my description above, Amy wanted to record the song but she wanted to change the lyrics, so she asked Chris and he said OK. Amy was singing the song from the perspective of Mary, Chris was apparently singing it from the perspective of the divorce he was going through.

You did not say the following explicitly but I feel that I need to say the following... Mary was, indeed a tool, mightily used by God to bring His Son into the world. She declared Christ to be her "Saviour" in the "Magnificat" & a sinless woman (Pope Pius IX declaring her to be the "immaculate conception" in December 1854, declaring that she, as well as Christ, was sinless)!! A sinless person does not need a Saviour!! She was also not a perpetual virgin (also so-declared by Rome)! In Matthew 13 v 55&56 we read, "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary & his brother's names James, Joses, Simon & Judas & his sisters, are they not all with us? She was a woman mightily used by God but calling her "the Mother of God" (Council of Ephesus, 431) is also blasphemy. She was a mighty person of faith but never "co-Redemptrix" (so declared on June 26, 1913). However, Rome back-peddled on this when it's theology proved unpopular & tremendously difficult for Rome to explain well enough so that it's own people didn't revolt). Her reward, in heaven will be great but she will NOT sit on the right-hand of God! That seat is Christ's alone!

This song makes me cry. As a former Catholic Mary was a big part of my youth. I remember learning Hail Mary as a little girl. The Catholic Church over emphasizes her. @superbreadgirl05 I am sorry for you misunderstanding. This is a popular myth about Catholics, but we DO NOT IN ANY WAY "exalt Mary as if she's God." All we do is ask her to pray for us, as the closest human to Jesus (being his mother). We see her as a mediatrix, meaning someone who as God's mother is close enough to Him to ask for favors on our behalf. So yes, she's a big deal, but no we do not worship her or even pray TO her. We pray TO Jesus THROUGH Mary. We only do what Jesus Himself did when He brought salvation to the world through a human. He didn't have to do that, but he chose to, making Mary the new Eve...just as Eve assisted in the death of mankind through Sin, Mary assists in the redemption of mankind through Jesus. Again, in case I wasn't clear, CATHOLICS DO NOT SEE MARY AS DIVINE. I cannot stress that enough. Also, "Catholic" means "universal" which is not the same thing as "all accepting."
