    Dude, with all sincerity, thank you for your content. It is criminally under-appreciated, but not for long. You’re providing valuable, comprehensive instructional content with the sole purpose of sharing knowledge/teaching rather than primarily shilling some various plug-in/sample pack. Thanks man.

    As someone who loves metal and also doesn't have a guitar, I heavily appreciate the "Elitism In Metal" segment. It's really nice to not have massive roadblocks in making the music I love.

    • @StephenChapman
      @StephenChapman 2 місяці тому +4

      IMHO, that critique is applicable for people who program instruments and then expect others to believe they're actually playing. Charles Caswell from Berried Alive is a prime example of this. The guy is clearly a phenomenal guitarist, but he expects everyone to believe he can actually play everything he puts out. The solo to Pustules from Rings of Saturn is exemplary of this. That is not a humanly-possible solo to play that cleanly, that fast. And here is where there misconception happens that it's "elitism" to criticize that. The solo itself sounds super-cool, man. I don't care if it's programmed, personally! I dig a lot of his music, irrespective of what he can or cannot literally play.
      The difference is that, if it's programmed or recorded in segments or recorded at half-speed or whatever else so as to nail the lead, don't run around and say or suggest it's you actually playing that thing. I've tried numerous times through the years to pin him down on that specific solo as an example, but he's great at deflecting (i.e. he plays victim and acts like his videos of him playing OTHER highly technical things equates to him playing that solo; in other words, he wants us to believe he can play ALL technical things simply because he can play SOME technical things). Then his fans want to tell me I'm just jealous or whatever and the conversation devolves. Again, it's very clear that Charles is an excellent guitarist, but he's like Lance Armstrong: world-class, but still uses enhancements and expects people to believe he's not.
      Anyone who programs an instrument can clearly hear the trademark tells of it being used in music. For me, programmed instruments are no problem whatsoever. I fully agree that we should all use the tools available to us to get our creative ideas out and realized. I do play guitar, but while I'm travelling (happens a good bit for work), I love programming ideas while on a flight or in the hotel room. It's a gift that we live in a time where these tools are available to us. I just have absolutely no respect for people who use it to lie to others. On the other hand, I have mad respect for people like MO who are open and honest about it, especially in the face of people who do have some kind of problem with the tools themselves -- primarily when it comes to guitar. Like MO implied, it's an odd standard to apply while simultaneously being okay with drum programming, etc. Lol.

    Awesome video, I use the Shreddage 3 Hydra for all my songs, I feel one should use every tool that is available to bring your creative ideas to life. Midi guitars are not perfect but I've tweaked mine to the point that it works for most sounds that I need and it makes the writing process a thousand times easier

    I'm an electronic music producer who combines metal in my music, and I use exclusively MIDI guitars (also MIDI bass and MIDI drums). I prefer Ample Sound's Hellrazer (mainly because of the Riffer feature), and I use it with the 11 11 11 amp sim, which works surprisingly well in my opinion. Anyway, I wanted to say thank you for this amazing video. I will definitely watch this a couple more times, and I'm sure it will elevate my MIDI guitar programming.

    For anybody looking for free alternatives, there's this freebie guitar called metal GTX. It's a 7 string that goes to a low g iirc. Not fully sampled and it's really bright, but I'd argue it contends with Odin 2 in realism

    • @anything4280

    To me the composition is the most important thing. Technical ability is second. Idgaf if someone uses midi instruments. If the music is good that's what matters. I say this as a multi instrumentalist.

    I love Hydra but ultimately the phasing issues ruin it for me. Especially considering they have no fix for it. Or, won't patch it rather considering it being a huge issue for many people out there. I just got Odin 3 recently though and it's pretty gnarly. 🤘

  • @StoriesOfSolitude
    @StoriesOfSolitude 2 місяці тому

    I personally like to use the Hydra for lead and solo work, but either the Odin or Axe Machina for Rhythms, depending on the tuning I'm working in. I've noticed, at least for me, there is no one size fits all library, it seems like some sound better in some instances while the others sound better for others, so I often use multiple different libraries in the same production. :) Axure is one of the only ones I haven't tried, I might need to give it a download too as well! This video is incredible, for people new to this and those who have been doing it a while, you cover all the bases!

    With regards to usability for Shreddage 3 Hydra, it has improved a bit in Shreddage 3.5 (I can see you're still using the older version) in the sense that the settings are better organized and prioritized. Certainly it still has a lot of settings and can still be daunting, but there is now a clear hierarchy in the controls.

  • @michellemay76
    @michellemay76 2 місяці тому +1

    Great video... Very informative! Axure and Odin 3 are awesome for sure and they're very good for rhythm. However, I play virtual guitar for a long time now and what I'm sure is that it's possible to make quite realistic guitar solos with Shreddage's guitars. It has all the options to be very realistic and creative... Which one is the best? I want them all anyway haha.

  • @codexstudios

    One question, how would you get Odin 3 to do that overthetop pick attack like Hydra (I liked how aggressive it was in your Humanity's Last Breath video and your drum mixing video demo)? Their "pick attack" controls seem to sound different between the two, especially when maxed out.

    totally agree with the elitism critique. If someone fakes playing midi stuff LIVE, sure, the complaint is legit. But the focus as a producer/writer should be on the final product. if it sounds good, that should be all that matters. gatekeepers are always gonna whine no matter what.

  • @ZultyBoi

    The elitism is so funny and I guarantee it all comes from guitarists. If the band can play it live who cares if the recording has programmed stuff on it I mean even Metallica's Black Album had drum triggers in it ffs and even Pantera's The Great Southern Trendkill's kit is nearly 100% sampled sounds instead of a recording lmaooo. Don't get me started on Dimmu Borgir and Bring Me The Horizon. I think guitarists are just buttmad they're starting to get replaceable, but as a guitarist of 20+ years myself I couldn't be happier cause fuck all the setup it takes to record a metal track that half the world just calls "noise" anyway. Big ups and huge thanks for the tutorial MO!

    • @rossbalch
      @rossbalch 2 місяці тому +1

      I would go further and say it doesn't even matter if it can be played live. If I'm listening to a record it's the composition and arrangement that matters.

    • @ZultyBoi
      @ZultyBoi 2 місяці тому

      @@rossbalch For the recording sure but if a band wants to tour or sell tickets for shows they've gotta be able to play what they produce lol I'm thinking more of a full-picture band lifestyle when I bring up live capabilities

    Can understand why you are so focus on how far they go down tuning, I know its a gener but man not the most popular and “realistic” nicho for metal guitar. Test them on a more common tuning so we can differentiate, also in that down tuning even real guitars sounds very unrealistic and very poorly articulated

    • @MOMetalProductions
      @MOMetalProductions  2 місяці тому +1

      You will get great realism out of these pretty effortlessly up until E standard. From that and above it can sound realistic but may require some more tweaking 🙂
