The problem with sports betting is that the safe bets don't pay off well, and losses can end up hurting you, so you start betting on long-shots in the hopes of actually seeing a return, but because they so rarely pay off, it's unlikely to happen. Of course, you only ever hear about the guys who get lucky. No one brags about the time they bet $500 on a parlay that didn't make it past the first game.
