  • My daughter, Hanne Andersen, and I shot this video at Tucson Swales. In the 1930ʻs a CCC project created large earthen dams in the desert. The change in water has created some pretty interesting ecosystems.

This is everything I could have ever wanted in a UA-cam video! Bozeman Science getting it together with Permaculture? Oh, yes. More, please!

I've lived in Tucson for over 40 years and even went to school for archaeology and geology and never heard of swales. I have hiked and backpacked the desert around town and have probably even been in one. How neat.

I have no idea why the UA-cam algorithm suggests this but hell yeah permaculture

A few of those swale’s were stock tanks for cattle that need cleaned out. Most were the old ccc work projects. Cool videos

Now I know what to call the areas built around my fruit trees on a hill where I plant garlic, which is huge, strawberries, lettuces, basil, and carrots. Tnx!

I don't know about the term swale but dirt tanks (tanque in Spanish) were made to collect and hold water for livestock. They would mostly catch the run off during the monsoon. Hopefully to last most of the year.

Glad to see this. Swales in the desert show results after the first rain they catche, even if the swale is just two feet long. All you need is a shovel. Good ole permaculture.

Second comment. I haven't seen a comment from Buzeman for such a long time. Welcome back!
Guess I did not get notifications about the others.

Basically a riparian habitat. Not really practical on a large scale.
"Swale" is also used in the context of grading developments for drainage. If you have a sort of gully cut through your yard for drainage, that's your swale

Texas stock tanks are the same concept. Building artificial local ponds and rain catchers. Watershed and water collectors are cool!! Texas got blessed with rain.

Nice. We make dirt bike jumps out of them. But cool for whatever you’re saying too.
