I love forensic clock work, and speculating how a clock came to be the way it is. A clockmaker once told me that people often painted clocks because the scrollwork had broken and they weren't up to making a piece that matched the wood. You have your work cut out for you - I'm in the middle of stripping a cuckoo clock case of the botched staining job I did; it's coming along & I'm having good luck with Kleen Strip Green (though I suppose many brands will do fine) and gently scraping with a brass brush. A scraper and stripper came in handy for taking the bulk of the old paint/stain/whatever off. Get will soon & thanks for the videos!
Thanks for that Bradford and good luck on your cuckoo! I picked up a can of Citristrip which is in a spray on form in a can. Thought I'd give that a try. The Kleen brand is probably better but I will be giving the brass brush and scraper a try as well. It seems messy no matter what I do so I'll have my apron ready also. I'm well on the mend now but thank you!! 😁😁
Hello Ab, I'm glad to see from you again. I'm always excited about your videos, but unfortunately I don't understand much about your great work. I hope you continue to enjoy your work. Best wishes and stay healthy!
UA-cam sucks. If I am Subscribed to your channel, WHY don't I get notifications that you put out a short. But NOooo. I get them from people I don't even know and none of yours. Don't you just love these Master Crafters, lol, that think they can improve on the clock or try to fit their home décor. I love these big, bold clocks. You have your work cut out for you on this one. Like the different looking Bob as well. You have a great week.
Good information. You can also do a google lens search. If there are any clocks like yours that will help. I know how you feel when you say that people need to push you. My ADHD if I had it all my life kicked in when I turned 50 and that is why I have so many projects that I have started but havent finished. Keep the videos coming.
I know mentally many disorders intensify over time, or major life changes can make one deal with issues that for many years were repressed or ignored. Whatever the issues I think it's healthy just acknowledging that we do have issues as a starting point. Google lens is helpful but sometimes leads to weird places. I still find old catalogs and advertisements, along with ebay pictures to be really good sources. 👍
May I ask what kind of clock Greg? I'm plum out of room if it's a tower clock. 🤣🤣 You are the first one to ever offer a clock donation. You can always email me with more info about the clock at time4clocks@gmail.com Thank you for your generous offer and taking the time to let me know you enjoy my channel. I truly appreciate it! 🥰😁
I have a 1898 wall clock that has scrollwork and finials missing from the top. My clock has a rebate in the top centre that would of held the tenon. Its a shame its missing. I need to do some detective work and find a picture of how it used to look. I also have an American Ansonia drop dial wall clock with a painted face, looks terrible. My biggest gripe is people sell antique furniture/clocks thats showing its age and a little ruff around the edges. They need to add "UPCYCLE" in the description. Grrr its just bastardising beautiful handcrafted pieces. If you own it you may do as you wish with it or whatever. Its the lack of skills that is imo ruining our historic pieces. Rant over, cannot wait to see the outcome of your Waterbury.

Many thanks for visiting, Werner. It is always nice to see you! Hope you are doing well in Austria, and I always offer best wishes to you! 😁😁
Ab, thanks for making this video, great to see and hear you. That movement sure looks dirty. I really like the fancy hands for the dial.
Thanks Elbridge, I hope to be up to the task! 😁😁

I don't know how the notifications work, Mike, maybe they are still working it all out. Yes this is a big job and you have a good week also! 😁😁

Me too! The skill area is the scary part. Beautiful wood painted is horrible to me. Very few are done well.
