About Location:
The Wayang Museum (Puppets Museum) is a museum located on Jalan Pintu Besar Utara Number 27, West Jakarta. This unique and attractive looking building has undergone several renovations. At first this building was named De Oude Hollandsche Kerk ("Old Dutch Church") and was first built in 1640. In 1732 it was repaired and changed its name to De Nieuwe Hollandse Kerk (New Dutch Church) until 1808 . In 1808 it was destroyed by an earthquake and on the site of the ruins, the wayang museum building was built and its use as a museum was inaugurated on August 13, 1975. Although it has been restored, some parts of the old and new churches can still be seen in this building.
The Wayang Museum exhibits various types and forms of wayang from all over Indonesia, both made of wood and leather as well as other materials. Puppets from abroad are also here, for example from the People's Republic of China and Cambodia. Until now, the Wayang Museum has collected more than 4,000 puppets, consisting of wayang kulit, wayang golek, cardboard puppets, grass puppets, leaf puppets, masks, puppets, wayang beber and gamelan. Generally, the dolls collected in this museum are dolls that come from Europe although there are also those from several non-European countries such as Thailand, Suriname, China, Vietnam, India and Colombia.
In addition, periodically puppet shows are also held on the 2nd and 3rd weeks of each month.
On November 7, 2003, the United Nations decided to recognize Indonesian wayang as a world heritage that should be preserved.
