A Link to the Past is a blast from the....past....
I didn't get to this in the Analysis but something I never understand is the tendency by developers to over explain.
Series like Zelda, Dark Souls and Silent Hill are what they are because they had a community around them whose soul purpose was to interpret and
make sense of them.
I'm not saying every game should do this but this is something more developers should be taking advantage of as it makes the player more active
in the story and is thus a better use of interactive form than the cutscene spamming alternative.
(it also forces the developers to abide by a standard of quality in presentation as nuance becomes more important and thus everything must be
designed with more attention to details and coherency, but then, what do I know? NOTHING! I'm just text on youtube, not even fit for the video,
I've been pushed down to the description bar, the lowest of insults, what's the point of anything!?!?!?!?!)

There is a good reason this game got a sequel for the 3DS. It's just that good a game.
I loved this game before I even left Link's house when I got this for Christmas in 1992.
Edit: This is the most in depth and thoughtful recollection I've seen of this treasure ever.
I played and beat this game back in the early 90's and this is exactly the reason why im still a gamer today.. Love this classic..
Where the hell are all your viewers? UA-cam algorithm needs to step its game up.
:)
Good point. I'll subscribe to help a little.
@Poff Nada there is nothing wrong with his english bro
Yeah. algorithm is shit
I love you comments about the flow of time and our expectations of previous art (video games). I, thankfully, was born before the game released, so I was brought up on Zelda 1 and Zelda 2. I still remember the day me and my dad discovered this game and I will never forget it.
Hey, I was so enthralled by your FF7 analysis that I watched Morrowind and now just starting this. Man this is some good content. It is very rare I reply(more of a lurker), say thanks, or even dare to sit through an hour long analysis for a video game. I have to say, you did your homework, your ideas and views are always well fleshed out and makes it easy for the viewer to see where you are coming from. I hope you keep up the good work(someday one can hope!!)
+Bobby Towers thanks, your comment made my day :D
Link to the Past is the greatest Zelda game of all time. Yes, I said it. You can disagree, but you'd be wrong.
Wow, so controversial.
This is the greatest game ever made. No question.
I do love the game, but idk man you can't forget classics like Earthbound or Chrono Trigger, or Ocarina of Time, or Link's Awakening. Final fantasy tactics is another that is just insanely phenomenal, it's hands down the best final fantasy game without a doubt. Idk man there are a lot of games out there that I think deserve to be called #1, I see it as like a few dozen games tied for number 1 rather than in competition.
(Edit: I guess I should also say, even fft is still a subjective favorite of mine - there are other final fantasy games others would say are the best but I think there's a lot less gray area between them as there is for the other games listed in comparison to a link to the past. Some say final fantasy 7 is the best, I think that's just ridiculous but people argue it anyways, I think it's one of those things where most people who become fans of the current games don't go back to replay all of the classics and FF7 gets talked about so much that they only go to try that game and just don't even check out the others. I Don't dislike FF7, I thought it was a solid game, but I just think people stretch it a bit when saying it's *the best* . I think the *classic* take is that final fantasy 6 is the best final fantasy game - but I think final fantasy tactics is the underrated gem no one really talks about, it's more niche and takes a little bit longer to really "get". Idk ultimately I do love A Link to the Past but when I see a game get listed as unequivocally the best I get a little hesitant I guess.
@Basedlander chrono trigger and ff7 are absolutely masterpieces
@Basedlander and ff6, a few others to
@Dude Man I have a list of games so good I can't rank them.
Lately I lean towards dark souls 1 but it's so hard to say with so many different games that are so good
It´s hard to find such a great analysis. I played this game long time ago, and a few month ago, I started to play it again. I never notices those details, like the one about the flute and that sad tale about a father and his son; I almost cried when I realised how sad it is. Im really glad to know those littles details, because, like you said, it gives the essence of a really well done game.
Thanks you!
(Sorry my english, is not my native languaje ;-;)
Thank you so much :D
@lorerunner is also fantastic when it comes to analysis. I just came across this gentleman here. I like It! Love to hear all the different takes on my fave games.
What is your native language.?
I know this entire game front to back. Probably beat it 20+ times and still in my top 3 favorites of all time. Amazing analysis
Incredible analysis of an incredible game. Very rare to find an analysis like this of a video game. Thanks for making and sharing!
Nice work! Really enjoyed your analysis. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing your channel grow.
Thanks for your enthusiasm, it really makes the work worth it.
:)
I'm wondering if you agree with this theory of mine, Aesir...
The NES games were largely about limiting the amount of damage taken to survive labyrinths and mazes, and while they had some puzzle elements, these weren't nearly as prominent until maybe Link's Awakening. Link to the Past was sort of a bridge to a more puzzle-centric game, a hybrid between hand/eye coordination damage avoidance and the more modern puzzle-centered games.
To me, puzzles and exploration are what make modern Zelda games tick. Not fighting, not the stories, but the puzzles. It will be interesting to see if this remains with Breath of the Wild.
About the NES games I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head and I agree wholeheartedly with your sentament on what makes a Zelda game tick.
For BOTW, puzzles defs did not dominate. It was very much combat and damage. The most threatening part of the game are the things that can 1-shot you until fairly late in the game
This is a realy good video!... it deserves way more views!
Lorerunner fanboy here. Saw your video on the side bar of one of his. I like what you have here and I like your channel! Have a sub!
I love this game. I used to have it as a kid in the 90's and all the neighbor kids, and my sister would watch me play it.
That sounds very cool shooting star. I also have playthrough content on my channel of this game, though I am still aspiring and I am not sure I will ever be as good as the guy in this video!
I played through this last december and I was surprised how difficult it is
games used to not kid around
love the fact you used the catchers net to deflect the attacks lol
Excellent analysis! ALttP is the GOAT! Also the best aged outside of abstract puzzlers,
super metroid aged well,, lots of snes gamess did
This game is my childhood. Will love forever. So many memories
Zelda a link to the past is so fun. I also played it on my channel.
Jus found/watched yr Zelda Video! Man u should do more then these. I really enjoyed it!
SUBSCRIBED!
Anyone interested in [A Link to the Past] from a design perspective, should find Tim Roger's "Vertical Slice" on it.
Not sure how I missed this video on your channel but my favorite game in the series after the first and second games.
Enjoy :D
I was not able to beat this game and have a grudge against it because of that. but i loved the experience regardless. definitely a great classic.
Akemi Homura I was sooooo close. I was playing it on the snes with an original cartridge and my snes from the last 20 years fried...but the cartridge was fine! Got a new snes, put in the cartridge and there was my file! And then it glitched...turned it back on. Gone. All gone. I was up to the last maiden. So angry
Im at the 6th maiden ;)
Give it another go. Don’t give up. The ending is amazing.
The music is so incredible
Speaking of religious influences on the series; I find it odd that the series originally used a lot of christian influences (albeit, some of the more notable ones are still used). However, nowadays, it focuses more on Shinto and the ideologies behind the Yin-Yang.
This was fantastic!
I guess I'm not one of those who need a music playing mechanic for the music to stand out to me. I'm one who pays attention to the music in a game it's a part of the whole experience for me
This game later opened me up to games like Elder Scrolls. This game is very special to me.

A Link to the past is also simply fun, after all those years. the mechanics are sharp, the fights are snappy and responsive and the environments are varied and well put together to accomodate links skill and moveset. Combine that with the popularity of pixel graphics, and there's really no reason modern audiences wouldn't enjoy it. Yes the story / characters are rather bland, but at the end of the day gameplay is what keeps players coming back. I'd even argue Alttp has a lower barrier to entry than the early 3D Zeldas.
good stuff man.
Dose butterfly upgrade your magic because my dad said it does not upgrade your magic he takes half your magic can some tell me please if help or not please no will tell me
masterpiece.
Thats a very nice accent. I know its such an American cliche that we are picky with accents. I don't have a problem with it (I have a Hindi nephrologist who is cool as fuck), but I can't place the accent. The only reason I make a note at all is it reminds me of the guy who played Drew Carey's boss Mr. Wick in the 90s Drew Carey sitcom.

I need you to explain what happened at 4:10.
What do you need explaining with?
I would LOVE a BotW sequel with a "darkworld".
Where'd Shiekah tech come from?
Breath of the Wild basically revived my old Zelda feeling back in 1992. The geography of Hyrule in BOTW strongly resembles the world from ALTTP. Just a few changes for aesthetical reasons, less cel shade, real temples resp. dungeons, Eastern Palace (Armossian Ruins), the Lost Woods expanded, including sections more free to explore than just one dark misty labyrinth, also a calm and beautiful environment full of mysteries, while listening to blackbirds. Of all Zelda titles, I still prefer the mythological, more classical (fairytale) imagination in ALTTP, without all the goofy stuff (of course, there already were funny things, it's just a game for young people). The old technology should remain a mystery of old ages. It's archaic style in BOTW with a little hint of steam punk set in such a beautiful world was magnificent! As you said, the addition of the Dark World and its melancholic beauty would be more than epic! Also, the player might have the option to play a beautiful, more mature ingame music based on ALTTP themes, or he can just switch it off for the environmental atmosphere. I lost myself again.
I really, REALLY wanna finish this game, but I always get bored...why?! ...I don't know, I just lose interest for some reason...gonna give it another go soon. :)
That Japanese thing about working somewhere till you die not a bad idea for video game developers look at Nintendo constantly improving over Generations they look at any high-profile American Dev from Infinity Ward to anyting ETA purchased and so many more
How come not the original Zelda?
I still firmly believe it's the best Zelda
27:51 I actually laughed out loud
Good video
"Ocarina of Time is pretty universally accepted to be the greatest video game of all time."
Psh yeah okay sure
24:20 The Fuck Boy?!?!
review Megaman!
I'll piggyback on this, but which Megaman?
The Classic 1 and 2 would probably be good to review and would be relatively quick but even though I love the games they both have their own issues (though that might make a good video).
X1 is good but there are lots of videos that have gone over why Megaman X is amazing.
Perhaps it would be a good idea for him to go over a game like Megaman X6? Go into detail about what parts of the game are good and what failed about it, because despite a few saving graces X6 was a real disaster.
Since he talked about NES games, I was thinking of Megaman 1 and 2.
My personal favorites (Zero saga) would be interesting, since they try to take themselves more seriously and (as he pointed in this review) make more sense mechanic wise (at least in the first one), since Zero is awakening of a hundred years dream and has to regain his old skills through practice, achieving a natural sense of progress combat wise.
Yeah, X6 would be a nice proposal also, since it was more a DLC like (by today standards) of X5. I don't really dislike it, not in comparison to X7 (and yet, I tried to play it a months ago).
Right, I must have missed the part about NES games (somehow, he definitely said it explicitely)
Honestly, he could probably cover Megaman 1 and 2 in the same video, show the growth between the two or maybe carry on with changes in design choices as the classic series progressed and discuss their flaws and merits.
Will do ;D
I remember meeting all the requirements to do the “Temple of Four Sword” for the GBA Ver. of TLoZ:ALttP and then a “friend” stole my game and I never got to play it. The king of douchebaggary. Lemme beat the Temple at least before ya steal it asshole.
Loz was only successful because mode7 graphics
Why did you spend so much time talking about voice acting for a SNES game? There are no SNES games with voice acting. It's a very strange decision.
The game does not exist in a vacuum from every other game.
There wasn't any 3D NES games either but talking about the strengths 2D has over 3D while using the game in question as an example would be appropriate
