  • Majora's Mask • Analysis (Monomyth Breakdown).
The Legend of Zelda is a series that needs no introduction and in this video, we'll analyze and explain away some of the design principles that made the game what it is.
The Game launched on the N64 in 2000 and has been heralded as one of the medium's finest ever since.
This video differentiates itself form the herd in that it the discussion is driven by a desire to UNDERSTAND the designers intent and how their choices drive player behaviour.

I love listening to Zelda analysis and discussion shows (videos, podcasts etc); and I have to say the Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask videos you've made are the best, most intelligent ones I've come across.
    Thank you so much, bravo

Despite my excitement at finding such an in-depth and highly regarded discussion of my all-time favorite game, I initially balked at the length of the video. However, I was immediately taken by your articulate, intelligent, and thoughtful premise, and I appreciate you providing another lens through which one might view and think about the game and Zelda series. Majora is nothing short of masterful, as was your application and analysis of Campbell's monomyth--very well done. I also loved the production insights you included; if only Nintendo didn't view this game with near shame, we might get more information about the creators' thoughts, intentions, and inspirations. What was done intentionally? In addition to the Hero's Journey, was, for a commonly-cited example, the stages of grief consciously inserted in the game, or is the evidence for this theory coincidence? Reflecting on its darker tone (and again, said almost apologetically) Aonuma stated in an interview during the 3DS remake that "[he] must've been going through something" while working on Majora--I wish there was more elaboration on this. instead of looking at the game as the bastard stepchild of the franchise, I would love a discussion about exactly WHY the tone is so different from any other entry in the series. The bit about the missile while attending a wedding in South Korea and its influence on the game's development has always intrigued me. After so many years, I find it challenging to discover worthwhile content regarding Zelda/Majora that's not clickbaity wild mass guessing or random theories with little contextual support. Also, I find your voice soothing and your accent is charming! Thanks so much--you've gained a subscriber, and I look forward to watching more😊

What i like the most is the character of the skull kid. Being a lonely child, whose greatest desires are love and attention, he finds it in tatl and tale, butis still DEVASTATED by the four giants departure. This is when the mask tempts the child, and tricks him into wreaking havoc for, once again the giants love and specifically their attention. He deliberately attacks those with family and love ie the deku royal family, darmani and his tribe, mikau and his band, anju and kafei in a fit of jealousy. In a way the world reflects his own mindstate. When majoras mask reveals skull kid is a puppet, our final confrontation is the "adult" in the body of a child (link) and a child manipulated by an adult...except it isnt. Inside the moon, majoras mask is represented as a child, specifically the darker side. Lonely, vengeful and mischevious. Its so primal compared to someone like ganon, because the darker side of a child IS almost animalistic. And what does he give link? A mask that turns him into an adult, Majoras greatest hatred. In the original japanese, " tag" is called "oni" meaning hes calling link a demon.
Plus the ending when the 4 giants forgive him and still love him and skull kid shakes from crying. In the end link befriends skull mid(again) and ultimately...whether intentionally or not majoras mask is one of the most thematically rich video games.
Great video friend. Keep it up.

You're slightly off about The Woman As Temptress. It's not directly obvious as the character isn't literally depicted, but with the context of what both Romani and Anju's grandmother say about Kafei and Cremia combined with who the characters' Hyrule counterparts are and the hindsight of Twilight Princess - The temptress is probably something to do with Link's acceptance of a normal "responsible" life with Malon, rather than taking on the difficulty involved in pursuing Zelda. Anju/Kafei is not only the biggest side quest, it's the most symbolically important because of the Sun and Moon masks.

I agree with you in that one of the themes in Majora's Mask is returning balance to order and chaos. I believe this concept is represented by reuniting the two faries before entering the moon. They even have white and black colors just like the ying and yang symbol, which is a representation of the same concept.

Like the analysis. However I would like to point out that there's a lot more characters in majora's mask carried over from ocarina of time. Just a quick list:
    Cucco lady = Anju
    Carpenters = same
    Ingo = Gorman brothers
    Talon = Milkbar bartender
Guards hyrule castle = clock Town guards
Guy from marketplace = bank guy
    Shooting galleries = same
    Juggling guys = same
    Running man = postman
And many many more. So I don't agree with that point. It's not just link, Epona, skull kid and the happy mask salesman.

I don't think of link after the game as a deity, but more as a demon. After you win the game the time still resets. Link ends up damned to repeat those three days for eternity. He might be the most powerful thing in Termina, but he's still trapped in hell all the same. Obviously Link was never stuck in a time loop in the overarching story of the series, so this idea is just my personal headcanon for and only applies to Majora's Mask in particular. In the manga the mask salesman is implied to be a demon, and this game shows Link making a deal with him. And in the end, you only ever end up in the beginning again. I know that's just a gameplay mechanic for replayability, but it's fun to think about.

I'll admit that while I did finish Majoras Mask going through nearly everything in the game aside from some side content and heart pieces, I don't feel that ill ever play it again due to my experience being ruined by the frustration of the game forcing you to complete the side content as there's not enough dungeons in the game to prepare for the final dungeon and boss on the moon. It felt much more like a modern open world game with its focus on side content rather than the focused approach with balance of main and side content that OoT has. I still keep an N64 cart and some digital releases of Majora from the Wii store but just don't see myself playing it ever again.

It sounds like Miyamoto gave the Majora's team a fool's errand, hoping they'd drop the subject given the approaching launch of the gamecube and the shifting focus to new technologies.
So much of the development is marred by Miyamoto's heavy-handed and unwelcome oversight and forced crunch, culminating in the Moon receiving a face - looming over the game and its developers. They reportedly had to change the Moon's face to make it resemble a certain Nintendo exec a little less.

I would beg to differ that the differences from 3D to 64 are not that significant. They designed the whole great bay temple around an ability that they removed in 3D. That's an error of astronomical size. They also removed all of unique boss battle tropes and replaced them with the same thing (the eye ball) they broke the way deku link moves across water making it unbearable and painful. The list of things they fucked up in that game just goes on and on. Meat-head roid-monkey link in the stone mask perhaps offended me most of all. That being said great video - I agree that it is the best Zelda and a truly top tier game.

well I'm not scared of saying this *I'm a BIG Legend Of Zelda Fan* and Proud, BUT I'll also point out that Zelda games do have it's flaws *just like you* BUT IN MY OPINION Legend of Zelda *NES* is the first Open world Zelda game but not the best, sure it's a Classic *no doubt it is a classic* but not one of the BEST top 3 Zelda games *Maybe it's in the top 5* with that said .... Legend of Zelda A Link To The Past, since you stated *One of the BEST mass Marketed game* which doesn't make a game GREAT *In My Opinion*, but A Link To The Past made it even More Popular *Legend of Zelda Series Of All Time* it was the first to Interduced the Travel between Light and Dark worlds, Had a HUGE bigger world map and full of exploration and the boss fights was HARDER, Even Ganon was hard to beat.
A Link To The Past is a Timeless Treasure and it still holds up today, it has one of the BEST story telling *in Text* ever made, to make it short? In my Honest Opinion .... Beats Legend Of Zelda MM *Barely* .... here's my List of TOP 3 and top 5 Zelda games that every fan of zelda series and for every loving storytelling fans out there needs to play or play atleast once.
    5. Legend Of Zelda *NES*
    4. Legend Of Zelda OoT *SNES*
    3. Legend Of Zelda TP *GC and Wii*
    2. Legend Of Zelda MM *SNES*
    1. Legend Of Zelda A Link To The Past *SNES*
    3. Legend Of Zelda MM *SNES*
    2. Legend Of Zelda OoT *SNES*
    1. Legend Of Zelda A Link To The Past *SNES*
*Please Note I do know these are on Other Systems with added Extras, the Reason I do not count them in is Because of added Extras that Nintendo has a history of doing*
    So what's You'res?

I personally place majoras mask and ocarina of time (for nintemdo 3ds) at the tippy top of my beloved list, I believe the story and open world, coupled with the infatuating day-night cycle is something I nostalgiacally love, (granted while not original since it is a remaster of the origionals) Twilight princess was interesting enough, but odd due to the system (Nintendo wii) I played it on. I've played various handheld titles, not limited to phantom hourglass, link between worlds, and spirit tracks. These were childhood games but none stood out to me more than the top three.

Patrick Allen ok dude i have to say I am extremely confused on what you were trying to say, first of all both MM and OoT are not SNES games but N64 games, then why do you make a top 3 AND a top 5 which have a different order? I assume they’re not meant to rank the games based on the same criteria but then why are they different? There are a lot of points I don’t get in your comment due to poor phrasing, you should try to correct it because i don’t think you get your points across

While literary theories are the best cookie cutter ways to categorize each successful pre history story.
Did you know that the First Old Testament books were orally passed down, or that the complex practices of Judaism and Christianity were passed by Oral Tradition? But yet there is a lot of details.
In fact there are a lot of details in the Iliad like the counting of ships and men which provide a break in the story. And goes against the hero's journey with multiple plots, established "heroes" and going against their values to tell a brutal establishment of their culture Achilles for Greeks, and the Sons Of Rome for Romans both go against the Hero's Journey.
While Europeans all share the same original tongue, it was the different peoples' values and culture that changed the variation of PIE and thus story telling.

@@algumnomeaihehe Yeah it's unfortunate that people think all stories revolve around the same conventions simply because if you dissect them and dumb them down enough you can find the "same" mechanics governing them. A redemption with the father will always exist if you water down a story long enough and pan for gold long enough. Im definitely positive that when Anouma was directing this game, him and his team thought specifically how he would include the Temptress as a trial for link to overcome...
I think this antropological view does give good insights on certain aspects of the past and somewhat on storytelling, but seeing it applied to every single story only goes to show how tired the formula gets. Stories simply are more complex than a list of fourteen points to follow.
Confirmation bias is a great word for it, haha. I'll have to remember that in the future so I can make simpler comments.
Again, nothing wrong with this video, and in the King's Field video I can see especially why one would prefer a simpler story from a simpler time, but if there's one thing I love about majora's mask, its how needlessly complicated it is.

I wouldn't attribute it solely to confirmation bias, of course the human brain evolved to seek patterns so it's only natural for people to see those same archetypes in different stories from different cultures, but that don't make those archetypes invalid.
It's just like separating a story into begging, middle and end, every story can be divided that way, but that makes every story predictable or without room for innovation? That's certainly not the case, as even if stories tend to follow familiar structures theres always some kind of way to present, chage or subvert said structure, for example a story can use in media res or the villian the hero was fighting against all those years was the friends we made along the way.
Also I don't think writers try to purposely introduce the every step of the monomyth when they are creating a story, most of those end happening naturally when trying to add stakes or to develop the characters or the progress the story.

@@nopatiencejoe6376 Well that's kind of my point, the writer's aren't sitting down and making these things fit into the boxes the monomyths wants them to do- analysts are doing that afterwards. It's like when people overlook too much into the color of curtains a room has because it alludes to the purity of the conversation or something- when you're looking that deep into things to prove that it fits your narrative, I think that usually says a little more about the analyst than the actual story you're looking at. Our ability to recognize patterns in things is what betrays us in analysis because we'll try to fit things into boxes that we can easily understand when more often than not the influences a story can actually have can be seemingly random to anyone except their authors- inspiration and meaning is a fickle thing, and fitting it all into a monomyth that is "universal" can be dangerous more than it is helpful.

The handheld version of this game is completely different. They ruined almost everything that made the original great.

I find Author theory for Video Games to be dishonest garbage. As the collaborative effort is far too big to allow a single person to have control over the end result.
And the Monomyth to be broad generic statements you staple randomly on to objects to make them "monomythic". I like the pattern recognizing, but it just turns into poorly done nail bolting to ensure it confirms to a framework that is too broad to be a framework.

"Trees are good because we hid from snakes in them for millions of years"
The idea that you can apply a Historical Theory like Evolution to Literature works is frankly silly. Humans may or may not like forests, for the ones that do, they want to be away from other humans and isolate themselves (which is against Evolution). The idea that trees provide safety due to evolution is a very misinformed biased argument. Trees may not represent safety, as people who have PTSD often picture enemies hiding in them. This means that the proposed human species that you claim hid away from enemies in trees now fears trees because of enemies in them.
Also snakes, leopards, and bees are in African trees. Again try to put away your illogical bias.

If you want to have a conversation about whether or not trees represent safety then I'll gladly forfeit that argument, it was just an example of the principle that evolutionary psychology would change our perceptions of the world.
I probably should've noted instead how everyone seems to associate the sun with goodness.

What does arguing this point achieve? If he is so misinformed, then please enlighten the rest of us, as your nitpicking did not accomplish that. Remember there is no blanket statement or fact that encapsulates every single person alive, so your main argument is moot.

Tbh he’s just trying to *very* basically (which he notes) explain what Campbell/jung/Freud are talking about-all philosophers with hundreds if not thousands of pages on the subjects...cut him some slack, maybe if you knew more context on your own instead expecting a UA-camr to do the heavy lifting for you, you’d be able to gain from the insights this video made instead of having a knee jerk reaction and jumping to counter-arguments....obviously the point of the video wasn’t to argue for that point, but to show how that line of philosophy could be applied to this game-classic aesthetic analysis, as advertised.
