  • Brief presentation of the FREMM DA (Air Defense) LORRAINE (D657), the 8th and final FREMM Frigate built by Naval Group for the French Navy (Marine Nationale).
    =====================
    Naval News had the rare chance to embark on LORRAINE as the vessel departed the Naval Group shipyard in Lorient for the last time. The frigate will be formally delivered to the French Navy in mid-November 2022.
    At the shipyard, construction is ongoing for two Gowind corvettes for the UAE Navy as well as FDI frigates for France and Greece.

    Sous-armées et sous-équipée, pour un prix final quasi-équivalent aux Horizons, jugées trop chères à l'époque... La gestion des programmes Horizons et Fremm : une vaste de blagues de technocrates dont le passe-temps est de balancer notre argent par les fenêtres ! On avait besoin de 6 frégates AA, d'une douzaine d'ASM et d'au moins 6 frégates polyvalente (Les fameuses fremm-AVT). On se retrouve pour un prix final quasi équivalent avec 2 frégates anti-aérienne pure, 2 fremm bricolée en anti-aérienne (même pas le SeaFire 500 en radar...), et 6 frégates ASM (dont certaines se sont fait retirés les brouilleurs et leurres pour quelques menues économies de bouts de chandelles ...)

    En faisant le bilan arithmétique le compte n'y est pas : on passe de 17 FREMM et de 4 Horizon à 8 FREMM dont deux DA et deux Horizon. Comme d'habitude en France. Par exemple pour mes C/F-70 on prévoyait 24 navires (18 ASM et 6 AA) pour finir à sept ASM et deux AA.

    32 Aster missiles is not enough, should be 48 at least.

    • @admiralmallard7500
      @admiralmallard7500 11 місяців тому

      Not as big as the horizon destroyers, they were essentially modified to supplement those in AAW after the rest got cancelled. but the original design doesn't have the room for more missiles.

    I had always thought of PSIM's cone part placed under the central mast for an X/C band radar, then this vid said that part is made thinner because it's a blindspot. Ouchie. But anyway to continue, behind it will be the 2 diesel chimneys (Lafayette vibes), while the turbine's chimney become smaller via CODLAG config. Then behind it (front hangar) is the RapidFire ciws, while each of the hangar's topsides occupied with VL MICA cells in a single array. Raised foredeck front of bridge for 32-48 Aster blk1nt, then front of it another SeaFire ciws or 76mm, then 127mm Vulcan maingun

    I noticed that the ship has just 1 fire control radar. I know the US Burkes and Ticos have 3 and 4 of those. Does that mean this ship can only direct 1 missile in the air at a time to the target?

    • @NavalNews
      @NavalNews  Рік тому +24

      No, because MBDA's Aster 15 and 30 missiles don't need the target to be illuminated (unlike Standard Missiles). They have their own active seeker (and data link) to find their way to the target. The STIR fire control radar has been added on the FREMM to improve the accuracy of the 76mm main gun against air targets.

      The next generation of French frigates will be the FTI frigates. FREEM is getting a bit long in the tooth compared to the latest offerings on the market, although interesting they are sticking with the small size as it will limit their multi role capabilities especially for things like Unmanned air and submersible vehicles.

    • @dbyers3897

      The Intermediate Frigate (FTI) program is a response to a requirement for 15 first-class frigates to allow the French Navy to operate in a crisis zone as recommended in the White Paper on Defense & National Security in 2013. This would see the five FTI ships join the ten FREMM (Aquitaine) & Horizon class frigates starting in 2024.

AFAIK the only non-US equipment is the Thales Captas-4 variable-depth towed sonar array used on Fremm

    The French do ship building so well. As does Spain. RAN has received 3 Hobart Class DDGs, 2 tanker re-fuelers, and 2 LHDs one of which is a de facto carrier, to make Canberra a carrier only minor modifications are needed, a rough cost AU$500 million. I appreciate many will disagree with me but both european navies are far superior to the RN. Having 2 giant carriers which o not have the defensive options the USN/France has, and are convention powered imo sucks up too much money. And the new French carrier design is truly stunning, it will allow the French President an enormously wide range of options. France is still in 2022 heavily invested in Africa, their special forces and military are so spread out globally France along with the US and to a lesser extent the British have enormous force projection options. Naval Group, Navantia, both part government owned. As opposed to the UK [a result of the industrial revolution where european 'governments' retained significant influence in critical areas - while the UK went the way of privatising.

    • @admiralmallard7500

      So having 1 carrier which is only available some of the time is somehow better than having 2 meaning you have at least 1 available all time.
      Also you call our carriers giant then talk about the new French one which they want to be even bigger.
      Also it's not a "simple" refit for the 2 Canberra class, and Australia have no intention of getting F35B

      The First 6 of the class will be named after the first 6 USN's frigates, so the USS Constellation is the 1st, the USS Congress is the 2nd and the USS Chesapeake the 3rd.
      Sometime in the future the next 3 will be named: USS President, USS United States, and USS Constitution II... the original USS Constitution is still in service, so having 2 would require II.
      The other 14 will be named something else; hopefully something historic. Frigates are usually named after US war heroes, so Lafayette and Steuben from the Revolutionary war would fit the naming convention nicely.

      These FREMM frigates, was the design of them basically divided equally between Italian and French defense companies, or are they more Italian, or is it that the Italian one is much more Italian and the French one is more French?

    • @willw8011
      @willw8011 Рік тому +2

      @@Alsayid The FREMM was a joint venture between the French and Italians. The hull of the ship is the same, but the French have some different components than the Italians have on their ships.
      The Italian company Fincantieri bought a US ship manufacturer in Wisconsin, so they were allowed to compete for the US Navy's new Frigate contract. The US Navy paid Fincantieri to redesign the Constellation Class Frigates for American made weapons, radar, and other things, so those will only have some similarities with the FREMM. Fincantieri will only build the hull of the new frigates. The weapons systems, radar, and other things will be added later by the US Navy.
