  • A major controversy has shaken the rural tranquility of Annacloy in County Down. A celebrated "fairy thorn" tree - a type of hawthorn bush that fairies are especially partial to - has been removed during the dead of night. The uprooting of this magical tree, which was in the proposed path of a major road development, has left many people in the area angry.
BBC Northern Ireland's roving reporter James Boyce visits the scene to speak to some local residents. Have they ever seen a fairy? What is likely to happen to the person who chopped down the fairy thorn?

In Iceland, they build the roads around stones where elves and trolls live 🙂

That is pathetic. Such a shame there’s still so much quackery about. Just like the Middle East. Only less dangerous.

Fairy thorns are still very much a 'thing' in Ireland today, both North and South.

Yer man at 1:37 is priceless. Possibly born in 19th century too! Why don’t we see wonderful reports like this anymore. Serious, but sneakily taking the mick. You couldn’t beat some chat with auld Tyrone country folk.

This is wonderful --but sad for the people of the area. I wonder if they ever planted another tree? 🧚

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure that you can't replant a fairy tree/thorn/ring.

Love your fairy❣ I couldn't find mine. Yours made me smile. It is such a beautiful image to watch in your head, behind your eyes..a fairy tree. 🦋 We need more of those images to help our hearts in these times of horrific news. 🧚‍♂️ I FOUND HER💝

@@QueenBee-gx4rp it’s not imaginary in Ireland. It’s a “ thing” as part of our history and culture. So in that sense it is real. We need to preserve our culture.

Crime like that should be rooted out of the community. They should leaf no stone unturned to find the culprits even if they have to branch out very far. oak k is only a fairy thorn but it was a landmark and it's loss would have left the village pine-ing for it's return. The saps that took it should be ash-amed, I wood beech-eering to see them caught

You should branch out into comedy! Very clever...I just have to work out how to pronounce, "du9rr4bb9u".
It's as good a stage name as any, I suppose.
