No offense toward Matt, he is a good guy. But in my personal experience with bracket racing, most of the fellow racers would help you out in any way they could because that's the kind of scene it is in racing. The guy that just helped you out and you might just put him on the trailer in the next round. And you'll shake hands and say "good race" .. Not so much in dirt circle track lol. But drag racers are the best. I've done dirt and bracket and dirt is full of fights and drama.

There's something about breaking a rear end. Every time we have broken a rear end with over 1000hp it has ended up hurting the trans. At this point we just go ahead and pull it too and send it off to be gone through whenever the rear end breaks and we normally find a crack in something. I've never heard one sound like that though.

Bill doesn't seem like he's been involved much at all with the Falcon.

A long handled screwdriver works awesome as well. Go around with the engine running and put the tip against whatever part your trying to diagnose and either cup your hand over the end of the handle or put your ear against it an listen. It works fantastic! I keep a 24” screwdriver in the box just for that reason

Whenever us old timers used to get untraceable noises we used to use a stethoscope or at the very least a long screwdriver to listen to various places in the motor. Put a long screwdriver on the valve covers and listen for the smoothness of the rockers clicking then touch the intake near each valve positing then work your way back and down. everything should sound like a steady smooth whirly noise and what ever does not is the general direction to start looking.
Now.. that said a long long time ago I built a W30 for my cutlass and managed to partially spin a bearing. It made the piston ever so lightly touch the head. So light in fact the super fine rings on top of the piston where they were decked left the same pattern in the heads but did not flatten them out of exitance on the top of the piston. The only reason I knew I spun a bearing is the oil galley clogged and blew the oil fill cap off spewing oil all over from over pressure from the high volume Melling pump. Not fu8n going down a highway at over 75mph keeping up with traffic and having your windshield suddenly black over with oil. first instinct was to hit the wipers and that just made it worse. Managed to get it pulled over and stopped on the shoulder by looking out the side window and watching the line on the road in the side view mirrors.

The best decision made in diagnosing the problem, was actually made at the last race after paying the entry fee...and upon firing it up gentlemen, and hearing the noise, was not "to just send it!" I though would have dumied to the burnout box like everything was fine, done a very mild burnout then staged and clicked it off after he left, and backed it up only if he went clean out the back door....Putted to the end if not for the win.
He has 5 ways to lose...Not show up, break, jump, cross, and crash. And in No Prep, all of em are all too common, much too often. If it runs, is not leaking, and not ON FIRE, and I am paid...I am staging at the very least!
But, deciding to forfeit the entry fee, load it up, take it home and diagnose the issue in stages, saved you possibly a lot of time, effort and $$$$, and a great possibility of some extreme damage. Luckily though, that Low gear sun gear set locks up and spins as a complete unit when going forward, or Billy could have been in for quite a ride on that test pass.
Engine...Driveline (Break anything in driveline, rear gears, bent axle splines, universals incl. Just a cap, all the way up through converter). Always Pull Trans and converter, send in for a look see inside, and dyno of the Trans if possible. Lots of weak pcs. in there. If you break universal, usually will be front yoke ear during burnout or launch.
Broke mine on a low gear dry hop after the burnout and it took the tailshaft housing right off the tranny and bent the tailshaft on a TF 727B on a 3500 lb. 63 Polara. Sure enough, was just a week after losing a few teeth off a ring gear in the 8-3/4" 3rd member just driving it into the pits on race day...Doing nothing at all a lot like Allison's Mopar.
Glad you guys found it together even if Dad stayed pretty much out of it, and in time too..Go grab some cash this weekend you 3!

A common occurrence with boosted LS motors is a bent rod. They don't have to be bent to a deformed state that you can see with a naked eye. You will have to disassemble the engine to really check them. You can run a compression test and check averages across all cylinders. One thing is sure. It won't get better , only worse. Lifter noise would be more of a ticking and you would just loose a cylinder or have a miss. I think your thrust bearing is worn out or a rod is bent.

Billy / Tommy / Matt you need a automotive stethoscope with headphones you then can isolate the sound which will indicate with precision whether its top end or bottom end or valve spring coil bind. Old trick from back in the day. Worked every-time for me including finding a dropped washer down the carb.

Get a stethoscope and replace the end piece with a piece of brake line. You can isolate sounds by listening to a more specific area.

Here is something for you, I recently had as of two days ago a 2006 f150 SuperCrew. In all of my forward gears the transmission was fine however when I would put it in reverse it barely moved and it would skip and I kept hearing a humming noise ticking noise. I may have had the same problem in my truck and it was a rebuilt transmission. However the truck is now in the scrap yard, just went there yesterday.

Watching the guys listen as the engine was running I remember an old school trick someone in my past showed me, a wooden pole sorta like a broom stick held on the rocker covers and against your good ear might help ya search for a slight change in sound. It works.

Awesome work guys. It’s crazy how all the different noises these cars can make. I guess I had a crazy sound come from the tranny once and it sounded like it was from the motor but it was a couple loose bolts on the flex plate. Sounded terrible tho. Good work blowing up Vickers Battlax Trannys. I mean for him to get right at it like that is pretty great. I don’t care if he’s sponsoring you guys or not. To drop everything and get right on it saved the day. Good luck to ya guys this weekend. I hope you have a pair of runners.

Check the flywheel for a crack. Check the transmission to make sure BOTH dowel pins are in the housing. Had this happen to an engine I built and it took forever to figure it out.

Old mechanics trick: use a really long screwdriver up to your ear and run it down both sides of the heads and block to see if you can target where the noise is coming from.

Also a piece of water hose held up to your ear and move the other end around you can definitely hear a different noise with it 👍👍🤔🤔🤔🤔
