Rear Court Footwork: How to cover the Backhand Corner and hit with Forehand

  • You have a lot more options when you can hit with forehand instead of backhand in the rear court and backhand shots are also harder to play. In this video I show you the footwork technique that will help you to cover your around the head corner and still hit with the forehand.
    ----Additional Tips------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    There are a few more important things that I do not mention in the video but that I want to point out. That hopstep not only helps you to cover extra distance, but it also allows you to turn your foot, and by that you can also turn your hip further to the back. That you can use for extra power in your scissor jump.
    How much you turn and how far you jump always depends on the situation and especially how much time you have and how much space you have to cover. Try to adjust the length of your jump so you always get into a good spot to execute a china jump. For longer distances or smaller players sometimes also need an additional chasse step after the turning of the body.
    When you only have little time, so for example when your opponent plays a flat lift, you need to turn even quicker when you want to take forehand. There it can also make sense to not jump at all with the non dominant leg. When you do that, you cannot turn so far, and won’t be able to hit with full power, but at least you can take the forehand when the shuttle is not too far away. Here an example how that would look like: • German Ranking Tournam...

    I always felt to have better movement after a scissor jump over head shot when using what some people refer to chase movement i.e. use the racket leg continue to middle of the court.
    In this video when u return using non racket leg and if the player returns the shuttle to same over head corner, there's a conflict to the Movement.
    Ofcourse this movement on the video works perfect when we go for a kill after a smash or when we know the opponent is gonna place the shuttle very close to the net

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  4 роки тому +2

      Yes good point. Especially when you play a drop or a really fast clear and only have one step until the opponents hits the next shot chase is the better option. When you smash there will most likely be a short return so running steps help you to get faster to the net. When you play a high clear you have time for two steps so there i would also prefer running steps because they are more relaxed

    What do you think about Axelsen's technique who apparently doesn't do the hop step? It seems like he just quickly turns his body and makes a long step with the right leg. Is this more suited for tall players? (I am 1,98 m)

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  4 роки тому +1

      Yes good point. Tall players do not need the hop step in many cases and Axelsen is intercepting a lot of lifts very early by doing it. In the description I also wrote a few things about that way of covering the corner

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  4 роки тому +1

      Vielen Dank Timo! Versuche verschiedene Laufübungen erst einmal auf einen Rhythmus anzupassen, z.B. dein Übungspartner läuft bestimmte Ecken in fester Reihenfolge an und du versuchst in den exakt gleichen Rhythmus zu kommen. Dabei soll er bewusst das Tempo verändern und mal schneller und mal langsamer in die Ecke und aus der Ecke herauslaufen. Oder du machst Footwork und dein Partner wirft einen Fußball hoch. Immer wenn der Ball landet musst du in der Mitte deinen nächsten Start setzen. Auch hier wieder Tempo variieren.

    I've finally started to play again after a long break due to the virus, and this video really helps a lot! Question though. Is it normal to have a blister in the side of your thumb of your racket hand? Or is it a gripping problem?

      Hold the racket normally or loose while moving to the corner and then just before playing the shot tighten ur grip and forearm and the after hitting the shot hold it loose.
      Also cut ur nail:)

    With the hopstep alone you are not able to cover all the way to the back of the baseline, right? In the case the opponent hits a lift or clear all the way to the baseline do you shuffle after the turn or do you still hopstep?

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  3 роки тому

      It depends from where you start and also very important: how big you are! Small players will most likely need an extra shuffle many times, taller ones can already cover the corner only by doing the hop step

    General question: I'm a beginner, pretty short (1.55m) and I need to add a lot of chasse steps or running to the standard patterns. The chasse steps feel pretty awkward and inefficient. I am practicing them separately and trying to keep a low center of gravity. Is there anything else I should do or keep in mind?

Since backhands can be avoided till the time we are able to reach it but there are instances where we cant reach the shuttle in time and are forced to play backhand (very deep).
