    I'm sorry Charlie..
if you think the food they serve is Danish...
    It is not.
As a Dane who has visited both the bakery and the that restaurant in Solvang.
I / we talked to the same man as in the video, the masterbaker and the mayor.
I would say that it is almost an insult to Danish cuisine.
    IT IS NOT DANISH FOOD.
You do NOT serve "apple slices" together with Mediterranean sausage..!!!
Medisterpølse is served with potatoes and a thick sauce, as a main course.
Apple slices are used as a snack/dessert.
But the buildings, the museum, the shops and all the souvenirshops are beautiful.

Hahaaa. This town looks like somebody in 1900 vomited switzerland, netherlands and denmark all over, later somebody made it a very american themepark, all plastered with lego and fake nostalgia. What a weird plastic-replica of our country, why the silly clothes, I have never ever seen that kind of clothes here? Pastries seem legit.

Those clothes are legit local danish clothes, and its not ment to be Denmark, it's ment to be a homage to our beautiful country to which I think it does a great job ^^ Good job over there! But people with a bit of Danish culture knows those clothes ;) They are often used to dance "Folkedans" or Old timer dances XD And to celebrate local areas and festievals like on the Islands of Fanø and Bornholm. However not often seen the big cities so I guess some of the youngsters are clueless.

17:17 is a "julehjerte" (christmas heart), they're a favourite to make yourself to decorate your tree and also windows and walls with, made from paper you interlace, on top is a "nisse" scandinavian mythical creature, mostly similar to elves, but not the same, and around is of course 2 flags (Danes and also the rest of the nordics are VERY fond of the national flags, but it is not seen as a nationalistic symbol as in most countries, rather a festive symbol), and then there's a lot of pine branches and sheaf (many people still buy sheaf to put up for the birds)
17:36 "Hvor der er hjerterum er der husrum" = "when theres a place in your heart theres a place in your house".
2nd "Når nøden er størst er hjælpen nærmest" = "when the need is greatest, the help is the closest".
3rd "For lidt og for meget fordærver alt" = "too little and too much spoils (the soul/spirit/ethics/decency)"
4th one I can't make enough out of to recognise.
5th is "Den der gemmer til natten, gemmer til katten" = "He who saves for the night, saves for the cat" (literally meaning that if you leave out food, the cat will eat it)
6th is "ligeved og næsten, slår ingen mand af hesten" = "almost and nearly doesn't knock anyone off the horse".
7th is "en fugl i hånden er bedre end ti på taget" = "one bird in the hans is better than ten on the roof".
    They're all old danish proverbs/sayings

The cookies at 13:55 are "Havreflager" which literally means "Oat flakes". They're cookies made with coarse oats, butter, sugar, syrup, vanilla, etc. Then dipped in or brushed with melted chocolate. And they're absolutely delicious.

1:33 the wooden frames of the buildings are made with what's called "bindingsværk," directly translated to "binding work." It's called that because you "bind" the wood together with methods that don't need nails or screws in the modern sense. The nails are of wood, made on site for the exact purpose.

I visited Solvang when I was in the US years ago. I was I the US for a month and it was about after three weeks in the US that we visited it. I was very funny to see danish names on the shops, and all the roads and squares were named after danish cities. Also, they sold danish stuff. Us Danes always go a little bit nuts, when we see something about our country in other countries (Just look at the comment section of this video for an example😀). But, the resemblance quickly disappears and seems a little touristy. Also, the foods and many other things are very americanized, which I am not against, the city is after all in the US and it would be unlikely that they didn't assimilate a bit. But, it would be a mistake for someone to visit Solvang and think they have experienced Denmark. But, it was definitely interesting to visit as a Dane and they seem really proud of their heritage. It is a good taste of Denmark, but not a full picture.

Been there a couple of times...
    It's charming, in a weird way. 😉
I have several family members who live in the states, and my uncle took my wife and I there a few years ago, as he said..: "You're gonna puke from laughter, but be kind, they're good people" 😊
He wasn't wrong, I was like being in a Pseudo version of what somebody who's never been too Denmark, think Denmark looked like in a 19th century fairytale 🤣
Anywho. It was a nice visit. When people realized we all were Danish they started asking us about our heritage, linage and all that. Which was quite fun, because my family is about a 1000 years old, and I know we've got members on just about every continent. We actually ended up meeting an older gentleman who, if I did my research correctly, is a VERY distant relative of mine 😊
It was a nice couple of days. A bit cliché and the cuisine was not really Danish, the candy "Haribo" is also German, not Danish.. But, it was a really nice visit and we're actually going back again next time we're visiting the US.

All the text at 17:30 is old sayings/life lessions. "Når nødden er størst er hjælpen nærmest", meaning when your are in trouble there is always help. It is a play on the word Nød="nut" meaning both the one you eat and having problems.
There is also "Den der gemmer til natten gemmer til katten" = "He who saves (food) for the night, is saving it for the cat", meaning "finish your plate !"

    • @tobiasagdrupdrager5583
      @tobiasagdrupdrager5583 2 місяці тому

There is also "Ligeved og næsten slår ingen mand af hesten", which translates to "Nearly and almost, does not knock a man of is horse." I guess its related to jousting in that you almost hit him, but didn't knock him of his horse?. You say it to someone, exclaiming that they almost did something.
      I also see
"En fugl i hånden er bedre end to på taget" which I believe works in English "A bird in hand, is better than two on the roof", ie, You can dream of getting something better but it is risky, so its better to go with what you know you have.

Denmark is a part of Scandinavia ... it's Denmark, Norway and Sweden. If you are english speaking you often include Island and Finland.
Vaniljekranse (Vanilla cookies) and æbleskiver are a christmas thing here in Denmark. We do not eat æbleskiver with sausage, we eat them with jam and/or sugar to a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate.
The red heart is also a christmas thing, we hang them on our christmas trees.
And to be honest, I don't get a feeling of Denmark except from Dannebrog, the copy of a mill and the small copy of Runde Tårn (Round Tower) maybe, so maybe one should visit it to get that feeling.

It is because what is now known as Skåne in the southern tip of sweden was called Scania by the romans. The southern tip sweden has been home to the danes for a long time, it is only relatively recent it became part of sweden. So there is a geographical Scandinavian peninsula and a cultural/political Scandinavia. The fins are a whole different migration into Finland from the Ural region in Russia later on that is why they have a different language roots than the rest of Scandinavia. Where as Scandinavian languages is rooted in the germanic language branch.

Yes, Denmark is a part of Scandinavia. I'm not entirely sure why, but it could be argued that the Scandinavian pinensula streches down to Denmark, just a small bit of water seperating. Or it could be for historical reasons, parts of southern Sweden used to be a part of Denmark...
The houses seems a bit off to me, the idea of wood and clay combined is that the wood makes up the structure and the clay is just to fill up the gaps, it looks to me that it's mostly decorative there, possibly made of concrete, so no real need for the wood.
The heart thing is a typical Christmas decoration thing, made from two sheets of paper with different colors, you hang it in the Christmas tree. It's kind of like a basket and you put candy in it

In regards to the whole “is Denmark part of Scandinavia”
    A couple of points;
First and foremost - there is a difference between the geographic Scandinavia and the cultural one. While it is true that the peninsula is a certain area - there are still many areas outside the peninsula which are culturally Scandinavia or influenced by it, including Islands like Iceland, the Faroese Islands etc.
It is my understanding that Finland, despite having some swedish-peoples, are actually a different culture compared to the rest - their language is not similar to the rest etc. So I think this is why we have a tendency of not being very “large” in including Finland, but including Denmark which is very culturally similar to Sweden and Norway.
Furthermore, history needs to be taken into account. When you state that Denmark is not a part of the peninsula, this is solely based on the modern borders. But if you look back in time, Denmark has very much been a part of the peninsula. Much of the southern Sweden was Danish until relatively recently (Copenhagen, the Capital, is litterally as close to Sweden as possible) - Norway was a part of Denmark for many, many years - and Denmark also lead the Calmar Union, which encompassed the whole Peninsula. So Denmark has almost always been a significant presence on the peninsula - something which is now continued through the many organisations and cooperation between the countries.

The modern usage of name dates back to the pan-Scandinavianist movement in the mid-19h century. And at that time Finland was occupied by Russia.
But words change over time, and in the long run it makes sense to redefine Scandinavia to include Finland and Iceland, or perhaps we should just stop using the word Scandinavia.

This is more like a parody theme park of Denmark. Created by someone that knows nothing about Denmark.
"The Danes are very proud of their flag" I guess so. But we don't plaster it onto everything. That is what Americans do with their flag. We don't have to remind each other constantly that we're Danish. We all know what we are. That level of insecurity isn't Danish.
Americans constantly have to remind each other that they're the best. Has the most freedom. A lighthouse for the world to aspire too, The best democracy, the strongest, the best etc.
We don't do that here in Denmark. We all know that we are the best so there is no reason to constantly remind ourselves. If you have to constantly repeat that you're the best. Then you're probably not the best.
Like if someone tells you they're a stable genius. They're very likely not either stable or a genius. If they were they wouldn't have to tell us. We would already know.

Apart from that, Solvang is ok.
Denmark is the peninsula of Jylland and a lot of islands among which are Sjælland, Fyn, Bornholm, Læsø, Samsø, Als, Lolland, Falster, Amager, Langeland and many more and then there is of course Greenland and The Faroe Islands.

ohhhhh oyu hit the soft spot of a Dane "Denmark is not on the Scandinavian peninsula" the Danes first settled in what is now the southern part of Sweden the area called Skåne (old name Scania ) where Malmø is and along to coast toward Norway called Halland and Blekinge , Danes later spread to modern day Denmark but kept Skåne, Halland and Blekinge until it was lost in a war in 1648 we have not recovered yet!!! anyway it was the original land of the Danes for thousands of years, that said Scandinavia for us Scandinavians is really not about a peninsula we rarely ever if ever use that term,
it's about language, history and culture and also a "pan Scandinavian movement" in the 1800 where is was decided to have sort of a cooperation among the 2 countries Denmark, Norway and Sweden , Scandinavian languages are a branch of Germanic languages developed from old Norse and if we are patient and speak clearly we can understand each other, Icelandic is very close to old Norse that is cool!, however Scandinavians can't understand that anymore, Finnish language is not a Germanic language it is a Uralic a small group of language that have survived being surrounded by Germanic and Slavic languages Uralic languages are :Estonian, Hungarian, Finnish

We lost Halland, Blekinge and Skåne in 1658, not 1648, after the second danish/swedish war. After the swedes, invading from Germany, crossed Storebælt because it was frozen. ( 1648 was the year Christian 4. died and his son Frederik 3. became king. The same king who in 1660 changed the ruling system to absolutism from electoral monarchy. The king could only rule under strict contract with the nobility. The nobility was obliged to defend the hegemony against its enemy, and supply soldiers, and was therefore exempt for paying land revenue. But they failed their contract and lost the war. ) We lost Norway in 1814 because Frederik 6. sided with Napoleon who lost the war.

He was talking of the Matador Mix. This was made especially for Denmark and produced by Haribo in Denmark i 1983 when the first rerun of a very popular (Family) TV series (Matador) were announced for 1984.
The brand Haribo is German, but Haribo merged with a Danish company (Sukkervarefabrikken Danmark) back in the days into HARIBO Lakrids A/S (1935 if memory serves) and that company bought the patents and such from the danish family behind Sukkervarefabrikken Danmark. As the modern day Haribo is a merger it is fair to say that it is a Danish/German company although the name is of German origin after Hand Riegel, Bonn (Ha-Ri-Bo).
