Jon, here's a great idea. For everyone that grew up on comics, like me, New York is the home of superheroes. I always dreamt of seeing the places from the comics if I ever visit NY. (That's why those superhero cosplayers are there). It would be awesome if you did a couple episodes showing the locations from the comics. The Doom Latveria Embassy. Avengers Mansion. Strange.Sanctum Sanctorum. Peter Parker home (you did this briefly). Fantastic Four Baxter building. Iron Fist. Captain America, Iron Man, Luke Cage.... and many more. Also famous landmarks like Yancy Steet Gang for The Thing, famous battle locations, and so on. There's so many Marvel landmarks, you can do a few per episode and ask your viewers which others they want to see. Then top it off with the true home of all superheroes, the real Marvel bullpen office in the 70's and 80's. (and their current office today too).
What I love about this video is that it highlights the many ways in which New Yorkers throughout the decades have intentionally made their city special by big and small acts of Intentional creativity.
Like the look of Leroy's Place. We are finally heading back to New York in November after our last trip in March 2020. Didn't think it would be so long!
Ah, your best type of videos! #2 was by far my favorite…so cool. Some of them I had already seen but this video either reminded them to me or it have them some extra flare…✨
6 1/2 Avenue is tons of fun. I used to use it to walk to work from my apartment on the Upper West Side to Midtown. It’s definitely got the Montreal vibe and also, like Bologna’s portico sidewalks, it makes a great walkway on a rainy day.
I'm from Montreal. Went many times to NYC as a tourist or for deliveries as a trucker but you keep making me discover so many gems!!! I have always been thinking I've seen it all but NO! I'll have to go back and spend ANOTHER week-end there!! Thanks to you!
Awesome list! The best thing about Port Authority is it makes me appreciate how nice Grand Central Station is in comparison 😅 But that Ralph Kramden statue is pretty cool!!
Another outstanding video, Jon! As a former New Yorker, I really miss the wooden escalators of the only real Macy's store in the U.S.--Herald Square! Thanks for reminding me about some of the greatest things about the greatest city in the world.
Just came back from the NYC, 15-26th August! It is not the comment about this specific clip, but general about the whole series. You gave me a lot of clues , places to go, which i'm more than grateful i had a chance to see. I regret i could not find you there , accidentally, between thousands of people crossing streets, i would then bought you a drink John! All the best!
@HereBeBarr I have lived in Manhattan for years, but I have learned so much from your videos! Now on my weekend strolls, working on my photography, I'm on a quest to find the various places and things that you point out. So, I just wanted to say, Thank you!! #keepemcoming
Check out Max Neuhaus's "Time Square" in time square, it is a sound art installation hidden in plain sight, and can only be heard if you stand directly above the the subway grate between 44th and 45th street.
The Columbia St gate is inspired by Mondrian's "Boogie-woogie" paintings. One always appreciates a tip to survive the Zombie Apocalypse! I focused on the Bryan Park bathroom a few weeks ago (always walked right by it). Two nicely-dressed attendants!
Excellent video as usual Jon! We rode the wooden escalators last summer, and I love the info about the NYC Public Library - WOW! Shout out from Arizona, we'll be back in Park Slope next month for another visit, we'll keep an eye out for you!
Wow, I remember at 10:00 this escalator my mom and I used to take in the good old days back in the 1990s every Sundays when we just go shopping. Some things are best left untouched.
Great collection of secrets! Thanks so much for including us! Will look forward to checking out the rest of your vids ... who else is plotting an adventure this weekend ???!!!😁
So many cool statues!! Would love to see them all someday! And WOW that underground library stuff!!! That's amazing! I've never heard that before! That's honestly soooo cool!!
Great video. I knew about most of these but somehow I've never heard of Lovers Lane. I'll have to go check it out. And happy to see a few of the Bryant Park secrets showing up in here. :)
I don't know how many times I've traveled in and out of Port Authority over the last some years and never noticed that statue. I'm glad I found this video (and channel). Thanks UA-cam for the recommendation.
Some ideas for your next video in this series: *New York Public Library branch inside a subway station (51st street #6 station) *Public phone booth (corner West End ave. & West 100 Street) *You can walk from Rockefeller Center to Times Square via publicly-accessible underground tunnels, as seen in this Actionkid video: ua-cam.com/video/2dMNV3RDeeA/v-deo.html (although this may not currently be possible due to construction) I have more :)
Fun video! I'm from California and I've seen a few of these "secrets". I'm actually in NY right now looking out my window at a water tower. I love them! I do have to point out that Macy's is the largest department store in the US; but not not in the world. The biggest in the world since 2009 is the Shinsegae Centumcity Department Store in South Korea.
You should try to eat at mammons flafal they have great shawarma sandwitches or go to catzes deli they have the best pastrami sandwishes or salami or cornd beef or rubben sandwiches in the world .
As always great content! You were also at 2 of my favorite restaurants. La Grande Boucherie (6 1/2 Ave) and The Modern (other side of the sculpture garden at MoMA) Great places to explore!
My first ever year in nyc, I managed to find 6 1/2 Ave...completely by accident! I was looking for my sister's office nearby and was pleasantly surprised to find it.
I was in Macy's Herald Square last week and made a point--as I always do-- of using the wooden escalator. I remember it from when it was the only escalator in the store, back in the early 60s.
The Wooden escalators is one of my fave spots in NYC (there's also some between the 6th and 9th floors in the middle of the store). Also thank you for showing where the one water tower is. I was looking for it before but couldn't find it. And as a Marvel fan I definitely need to check out that Captain America statue
Nice! I wanted to take vids/pics of 6 1/2 ave in 2019 while working at the rock. But it was a mess mostly blocked with constructions. And then with pandemic/job change never came back. Looks Ike good time to visit. Wonder it got shorter…
I like the bronze statues of the 14th / 8th ave subway station (Life Underground). Also 6 1/2 ave reminds me of the streets in Pittsburgh that are actually staircases. Makes for GPS fun when it tells you to make a right and its a staircase that goes down a few hundred feet.
I'm a native New Yorker and there were at least 3-4 things I didn't know. Thanks. One thing...please don't point something out as a great "instagram spot" if people live on the street. The place becomes overrun with tourists (and NYers!) trying to get a photo, turning it into a Times Square carnival-like area, like Dumbo's residential Washington Street.
Hi Jon! I've been to New York for the first time a few weeks ago and omg...8 days is not enough even for Manhattan but still I did so many things and your videos that I watched beforehand were very helpful!:) I've been to many parts of Manhattan, two observation decks, yankees baseball match, central park, coney island, dumbo, whale watching, a rooftop bar and did looots of shopping (🙈), and I was in a huge rush in Macys but still managed to find one of these wooden escalators I think it was on 5th floor, there were some clothes for women if i'm not mistaken😅and the food was amazing, but a little tip: if anybody wants to eat in a restaurant, make sure to have a reservation!! I looked up some recommended places and for some of them I made the reservation 1 month before😅😅but they were absolutely worth it! I just wish I could eat more to try more things😆also the baseball game was one of the most memorable of all, i knew i was gonna like it but it exceeded my expectations! ⚾️ One thing is for sure: i have to go back to New York as soon as possible and spend at least 2-3 weeks there😌
@@mici4130 I wish I would’ve known about the captain America statue! I was there last month with my kids! I would’ve loved to have seen that I’m sure that they would have also

Addresses with fractions in them can be a real pain which I found out when I moved into my current apartment. For me it's the house number, not the street name. I sat down on my second night in the apartment and logged onto numerous websites to change my address for my bank accounts, drivers license, voter registration, etc. I ran into quite a few websites the don't allow slashes / in addresses. One was my bank so the next day I walked 2 blocks to my bank and asked for help changing my address. The teller looked at me with pity in her eyes because she saw me as a befuddled old man that didn't understand technology. At that point I had been working with computers for almost 40 of my 65 years on this planet, 20 years as a network administrator. She entered my new fractional address and said, "there, it's all done now." I asked her to back out of that screen and then log back in and go to my account again. Once she got there she said, "oh, I see what you mean." I asked her to phone tech support and fix it for me as I had to go home and make quite a few phone calls to get other companies to update my address. Just say no to moving into a fractional address building.
Some good picks there Jon but you must never have worked in midtown if you didn't know about 6 1/2 Ave. I love taking the "shortcuts" to get to 57th St!

Thank you for sharing the wooden escalator. New to me!

So amazing to have all of these in one video!
Glad you like them!
I've seen the Ralph Kramden statue. They should have an Ed Norton statue in front of the sewage department too!
I've lived in NYC. Most of my life & honestly didn't know about some of these!
I passed the Cap statue at the Barclays often. Great to know where it is now.

Underground book storage!?!? Mind blown
If there's a zombie problem in NYC, you know where to find me.
Oh man 6 and a half ave is so convenient on a lunch break to cut through streets!
I love the hidden gems In NYC. Great video as always Jon.
More things to look out for. Thanks!!!
Gonna take you weeks to fit all the picks in!
Very cool, especially enjoyed seeing those escalators.
6 1/2 Avenue is tons of fun. I used to use it to walk to work from my apartment on the Upper West Side to Midtown. It’s definitely got the Montreal vibe and also, like Bologna’s portico sidewalks, it makes a great walkway on a rainy day.
I've done that. When I lived on 53rd st.

P.S. I even had a bagel with strawberry creamed cheese in a Brooklyn deli at rising sun with a view on the skyline...we should try this one morning!
Very nice and interesting 👍
1:56 So, this where Phoebe Buffay made her arts.

Or Moynihan, but I hear they're going to do renovations on Port Authority.. well "hear"
@@HereBeBarr Fingers crossed…haven’t been to Moynihan Hall yet, very high on my list for when I finally get back to NYC!
Wow, Jon!!! Great video!!! Love The Commuters statue!♥️ Thank you so much!!!

Cheers from San Diego California
What a wealth of information! Appreciate the research you do.
I appreciate all the pizza you eat! 😅
OMG so much fun especially “meet me on avenue 6 1/2!” HA!
The wooden escalators at Macys are cool 😎
Public sculpture in New York deserves a video of its own. Maybe one video for each century.
Another outstanding video, Jon! As a former New Yorker, I really miss the wooden escalators of the only real Macy's store in the U.S.--Herald Square! Thanks for reminding me about some of the greatest things about the greatest city in the world.
Thanks for watching!
Those vintage escalators! I've ridden them a lot; they even sound different.
We have those in sydney too
6 and a half avenue sounds like an entrance into the Wizarding world lol
Literally have been to Bryant Park many times and never realized there’s a secret bunker underneath 🤣. That’s a pretty cool find.
