Amazing! I took lessons from Anthony about 20 years ago. Only played for a couple years then gave up. I just picked the bass back up a couple months ago and this video just saved me a whole lot of time and headaches. Thank you Anthony! Picking the bass back up years later really shows me how much I was able to learn from you.
I must say Anthony your method of teaching is so simple and I appreciate both the method and knowledge. I agree you're a really good bass player, I am looking forward to the pentatonic grid
The BEST learning moment and music lesson I've ever had. I understand music theory but heavily struggle with it. I've been playing instruments and making music for over 20yrs. New to really playing BASS in the last 2yrs. I play piano very well and could never remember the modes by name though I can play them all by ear. I now have it in my mind, so no matter what instrument I pick up, I now know what I'm doing. THANK YOU Anthony Wellington and Fodera Guitars.
Just as Anthony stated I have memorized the grid, and MILLPAD. And as I am playing I can now see the different modes on the bass. This was an amazing teaching and he is an excellent teacher and player!
Thank you so much Fodera & Mr Anthony Wellington. My mind is blown ... I gotta wash dishes to calm myself down lol.. Will be back and exploring all the modes on my 5 string bass.
I just came upon this video and saw Anthony talking about he responds to people, and I have to say a couple years ago I sent an email to his website to ask him where to find those hair ties that he and Victor play on their basses. Anthony actually responded back to me within a couple of hours. My jaw dropped I never expected him to actually respond I expected either no response or someone from the website to hit me back, he seems like a genuinely nice guy and just really authentic so I get what he is saying about being a nice person because that's what people are going to remember him for - he's definitely one of the best players and teachers in the world but also a genuine good dude as well!
Ant your the one of the most righteous SHARING non Hater dudes out here man ....Ive been playing bass for years as a producer and you taught me more in one hour than I can be thankful for so thank you thank you thank you
Epic lesson Anthony! Thank you Fodera for posting this clinic and thank you Anthony for sharing your knowledge. I hope to catch the pentatonic grid lesson at some point.
Wow I’m blown away! All this time I’ve been struggling and I finally understand the it as a whole when he shows that’s it’s one “ big” mode. Thanks Ant.
Thanks! this has really clicked with me. Simplifying things for life students. Teacher hasn't taught until student has learned. Excellent teaching skills Mr. Anthony!
Thank you so much. Learning this pattern just removes a cognitive load and allows me to think about notes and intervals without thinking too much about fingering, and I just watched this and tried it out today. I love the patterns in music theory!
I watched this video. I made sure to memorize the pattern (Whole Step - Whole Step - Whole Step, Whole Step - Whole Step - Whole Step, Whole Step - Whole Step - Whole Step, 12-4, 12-4, 1-34, 1-34), but other than that, I just kind of let the video go over my head. I watched another video, which covered moving scales up and down the neck on a 4-string. He started off with 1 octave scale shapes starting on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th fingers on the third or fourth string, and one last shape starting on the second string to tie them together. Then he expanded each of those shapes from a single octave, to every note you can hit in that scale position. I started practicing based on that lesson, and you know what I found myself saying to myself? "2-4, 12-4, 1-34, Whole Step - Whole Step - Whole Step." The lesson in this video has stuck with me.
Sure but in this video he says whole step - whole step, which is essentially from 5 to 7 (one whole step) - from 7 to 9 (one whole step) being 2 whole steps in total not three like you mentioning.
Wow one mode pattern over 7 strings, this video is a source of enlightenment for any serious bass player, please watch and thank me later. What a genius idea Mr Wellington 👏👏👏
I've had a few 'sit downs' with Anthony!! He is really good!! Very Methodical. I've had the pleasure of witnessing him in action......He's phonomenal!!! Had me playing a ten-string in twenty minutes...
I am a piano player, but play guitar and bass as well... modes are really simple, but people make them complicated starting with the Greek names. they are simply derived from one scale where you create other scales by starting on different notes in that scale but remaining within the notes of the original scale. Jazz musicians use them to improvise, some do not agree with modes because its just playing scales and not truly improvising. Rather, improvise in the actual chord that you are in. Anthony explains it simply from a modal perspective. I agree also tabs are bad, and some argue simple modes for guitar and bass limit your understanding of music. Anthony certainly knows music. But I believe learning all this in perspective and relation to music theory is essential to become a master of your instruments. Don’t turn away knowledge if it makes you understand. Only if it cripples your ability to understand by over simplifying.
Anthony You should have your own basic classes on the web.Explaining Basic concepts like that showing this kind or clear points of view would beinvaluable tool.Showing a pupil making mistakes like this one would be a very effective way of teaching too.We all know that your are and awesome bass player but I did not know that you were so good teacher !I feel that you love playing over anything else but now I know that the second thing you love is TEACHING !It is a blessing to find people like you that after all your years of effort learninghas understood that EGO has no Value !Share and enjoy sharing is what you do and where you enjoy most.Exactly like kids do playing and sharing with other kids !thanks for your giving !
Good lesson. I see this grid as a 3 Octave... 1st finger start ... Mixolydian mode fingering, for one position, on a 7 string bass. To expand on this a student should also work on 2nd finger positional start, and 4th finger positional start, and using the same formula Anthony has used for this lesson.example.... for 2nd finger start the grid would be 24 124 134 134 ww ww ww .....for 4th finger start it would be 4 124 124 134 134 ww ww
I love it when he asks people their names, they're like "Uh" Now think real hard, it's your name (one of the hardest things to remember)! Tell you the truth, I'd probably be fumbling around for my name if he asked me lol ;)
I don't know where you are, but I'll will find you and I will kiss you! ( I'm straight by the way). I watched this on my phone while riding in a car with someone, I got home and I could play the modes on my 5 string. And I only knew the major scale earlier this morning!
Tab would not have visually shown his first major point...the distance from one note to another. Would only show the number, not the whole step distance in relation to a half step distance and visa versa.
You have to define what a good person is is a good person someone who wants to give everyone else free stuff so they never developed character or self reliance or is a good person someone who teaches someone else not to depend on the government for everything
Hot damn did this man deliver. Improvisation will never be the same. Serious respect to Anthony's teaching skill ✋🏼
There must be over £100.000 grands worth of foderas on the stage, i love them all, great lesson too Anthony.. rob

Thank you so much Fodera & Mr Anthony Wellington. My mind is blown ... I gotta wash dishes to calm myself down lol.. Will be back and exploring all the modes on my 5 string bass.
This is the bass lesson and the life lesson I needed right now. THANK YOU
Thank you Anthony and Fodera to bring this clinic public on UA-cam. It should be mandatory watching material for every musician!

I kept wanting to ask what scale he wants me to play in...major or minor?
Here in 2024. Went to camp over 10 years ago and Anthony taught me all this then. Here to watch it again.

*Had to watch it again......this is a really great way to teach this stuff*
What a great lesson. What a great teacher !
When he said wipe the slate clean of what I know About modes was the easiest thing I ever had to do. Cuz I know nothing 😂
I've had a few 'sit downs' with Anthony!! He is really good!! Very Methodical. I've had the pleasure of witnessing him in action......He's phonomenal!!! Had me playing a ten-string in twenty minutes...

Anthony is an amazing teacher. I wish this info was available in some kind of package.
Anthony does lessons directly with students as well.
@@joshwolfer That's the only way I could learn this and I have been playing 45 years.

Really great teaching! I actually got this from the Bass Alchemy book but to hear him voice it made it make way more sense.

32:19 - pic of whiteboard/MILLPAD
34:46 - thought on guitar tablature
44:46 - fret shift
50:16 - fretboard demonstration of whole/half steps
and I thought I was the only one that worked on bass as math great lesson

Muchas gracias too
great stuff thanks a lot
I love it when he asks people their names, they're like "Uh"
Now think real hard, it's your name (one of the hardest things to remember)!
Tell you the truth, I'd probably be fumbling around for my name if he asked me lol ;)
Thank you for this!
Anthony is so accurate and funny lol
I don't know where you are, but I'll will find you and I will kiss you! ( I'm straight by the way).
I watched this on my phone while riding in a car with someone, I got home and I could play the modes on my 5 string. And I only knew the major scale earlier this morning!
Brilliant!!! I know my modes, but not this way. So clear!
great lesson, i just learnt my modes from this
Muchas gracias
Great! Thanks a lot!
Wish I had been there. I have questions
wish i could see the board
This is great!, thanks
Can you make a video of how to practice in all 30 keys? I saw that video of Victor Wooten talking about music theory and how many keys there are.
He and Victor share very similar speech patterns.
Anthony is a genius.
Did he go on to teach how to apply the modes next?
Remarkable! Is there more footage of him doing the modes on a 4 string?
Greg Moore lol
*mind blown*
Thank you Sir!
Now how can I apply this stuff!!
I'm clapping for Daniel!!!!!!! Good job!! Ok...I'll behave. :-]
Anthony...How do you like your PST bass?
This is amazing. Holy shit
Wearing piloti driving shoes - wonder what he drives. Foderas and Porsches are in very good taste.
Why does he want the 2nd note of the whole step, whole step to be second finger?
this in insane. what a mind.
Tab would not have visually shown his first major point...the distance from one note to another. Would only show the number, not the whole step distance in relation to a half step distance and visa versa.
Mind = 💥💥💥
brilliant perspective
*exhales*.....I know kung fu
The 9 people who gave thumbs down sucks. What are you guys, alien?
🤣😂
Got it! 👍🏾
7 modes on a 7 string....ok but on a 4 string what do you do? Go back to the top?
did you ever figure it out? you just play smaller fragments. ionian mode is the wh-wh-124-124
Shit means, Ship High In Transit. So the boat won't explode from placing it in the hull.
Great lesson but isn't just like - I know how to drive a car but don't know the road rules?
Basses
Unreal! Bronze that head.
Kids with 7 string Foderas :D
Pro tip: Start at 10:00.
humble ....absolutly isnt...but honest
I am more of a visual learner and not beginner musician. He should hust demo what he is saying so there would be no need for so much repetition.
I love those fat basses
